My instinct is that it's obviously going to be crap.

But on the other hand, the movie Wizard of Oz is pretty different to the book. If they want to adapt the book in their own way, then fine.

But modern Hollywood trying to do Wizard of Oz? Nah, that would be utter shyte.

They did that with Return to Oz and the reception was hardly favourable

Anyway didn’t they pretty much do this with the Oz film featuring Mila Kunis?

Good! I can stick it on the list of films I'll never watch. It can join the likes of the Wilie Wonka and Ghostbusters remakes. Mean Girls is on that list too.

That was how Oz ended up in Oz

Some roles in films should be sacrosanct.
With the original film not messed with or altered.
This in my view is such a film.

I don't think this will work.

A stage production update can be effective but not as a remake as a film.

That was a prequel and I actually thought it was a decent movie.

I'm not mad at it, although it's destined to be terrible if they try to do a straight remake of the film. I'd like to see them tackle the book versions, or even the darker Oz of the Wicked books (The broadway musical was a very loose adaptation of the books).

Yeah I’d definitely be ok with them tapping into the darker side of Oz

Well, kind of, Return to Oz was based on a couple of the sequel books rather than the first one.

There have been loads of different adaptions over the years.

I remember Sam Raimi saying about his 'Great and Powerful' prequel he wasn't allowed to use certain elements from the 1939 film - such as the witches' skin having to be a different shade of green - because of rights issues.

(Although I just read that Warner Bros hold the rights to the 1939 film so this version will be able to use things like that).

Why

Can they not just make new movies with new ideas, I genuinely can't think of a remake I prefer over an original

...I liked Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast probably as much as the originals or almost.../...I can’t think of other ones atm...but I’d quite like to see a remake of Hunchback of Notre Dame, I think...

A remake of hunchback is in the works Ammi. I think Josh Gad is making it

Freaky Friday
The Parent Trap
A Star is Born
The Hills Have Eyes

ALSO the version everyone loves isn’t even an original anyway, it’s a remake of the 1925 version

The Wicker man is an absolute classic. How could you even suggest such a thing?

The legend himself, Edward Woodward.

The Muppets Wizard of Oz was the only time I've seen the same actress playing all of the witches, that'd be a neat trick to do for the remake.
