Bit of a dry year, as expected. I'm hoping Promising Young Woman does well and that Chadwick gets the oscar.
Need to watch the others though, I think I'll watch Sound of Metal on Friday since it's on Amazon Prime, I believe. Mank holds no interest to me, but I'm definitely interested in seeing Minari and Nomadland as well. I imagine I'll get around to the rest at some point too.

The Father Is the only movie I haven’t seen. Might check it before the show. . Judas and Sound of Metal are my faves from the list. I love the diversity of the Best Actor category too and two deserving female directors for the first time ever.
Chadwick winning would be a really emotional moment and the performance deserves it too.

I'm glad to see big franchises and Disney have been overlooked  I hope that era of Big Hollywood will sizzle out before long!
Superheroes have more representation in the Razzies than the Oscars :joker: Though that's Wonder Woman 1984, which was actually good!! If anything from that milieu deserves a Razzie it's Birds of Prey...

Out of the Best Picutre nominess, Mank, Ma Rainey and Trial Of The Chicago 7 are all on Netflix, Sound Of Metal should be on Amazon Prime.
Nomadland isn't out on Disney+/Star till April 30th and for some reason The Father isn't out till June 11th.

Blockbuster franchises (Lord of the Rings aside) have rarely been Oscar darlings so not sure why you would have expected to see an MCU or Disney film with a big presence outside of maybe a VFX nod.

Golden Globes and Grammys ratings were also way down this year.
Oscar ratings have been declining for years - one of the reasons I have seen suggested (for the previous decline) is that people get so much info on celebrities now from social media whereas back in the day the Oscars were the one time to see big names in real life. Actors have lost their star status.

Right wing snowflakes gonna snowflake, I guess.
I wish Promising Young Woman got more attention, I've not seen Nomadland but, admittedly, Frances McDormand seems to be doing what she does best. I'd have liked to have seen Carey Mulligan get the Oscar.
It's a shame they didn't give the Oscar to Chadwick Boseman too, but I'm glad Daniel Kaluuya got recognition.

I enjoy Trump supporters reliving the failures of their false god over and over, the delusion is very entertaining.
Oliver_W
28-04-2021, 07:56 AM
To be fair you don't need to be a Trumpster to find it cringey when very rich celebs use a circle-jerk award show to screech on and on about politics.
But also to be fair, only a handful of movies actually came out, and hardly anyone saw half of them. The fact that most of the films were "ones no-one cares about" was probably almost as influential in the drop in viewing figures as the political droning.
Marsh.
28-04-2021, 11:22 AM
Yet, you watched.
As already said elsewhere, the decline in viewing figures has been happening for a long time and it has a lot more to do with the fact you can see celebrities and movie stars all the time these days, unlike the days when film premieres and awards shows were the one chance to see them all together.

Yet, you watched.
As already said elsewhere, the decline in viewing figures has been happening for a long time and it has a lot more to do with the fact you can see celebrities and movie stars all the time these days, unlike the days when film premieres and awards shows were the one chance to see them all together.
1980 Oscars 31m viewers
2019 Oscars scored 29.6m viewers
2021 9.8m

Well, you see, there's this little thing that's been happening as of late called a global pandemic. This little pandemic thing has pretty much closed many avenues of entertainment down world wide for long periods of time, causing many big films and contenders to essentially skip the year which meant that most of the nominees were films that were nominated that weren't seen by most people.
It's basic common sense, really, but we can't expect that much from right wing blue tick snowflake commentators that make out that lower ratings for an award show is somehow the end of liberalism.
i don't think many would consider the oscars important this year for obvious reasons. Celebs patting themselves on the back never floated my boat, and I think many felt the same at least this year

I didn't watch it, I looked a list of the results, and found clips of the bits I care about :joker:
So you're whinging about something you haven't watched. Same point.
