[China’s top lawmaking body has unveiled plans
to ensure only “patriots” can govern
Hong Kong as Beijing tightens its grip
on the city with electoral changes
including a vetting process for
all parliamentary candidates.

In an annual “work report” delivered to
Beijing’s most important political meeting on Friday,
Premier Li Keqiang also
swore to “resolutely guard against and deter”
interference by external forces,
amid growing international alarm
at Beijing’s attacks on pro-democracy voices.

Li also pledged to “resolutely deter any separatist activity”
in Taiwan, and revealed significant economic
and population goals for China’s future,
including GDP growth above 6%.]

I can't believe that we're having to talk about Hong Kong people leaving their own homes though, and it's all because of that evil Government in China who won't let them be more independent.

Tbh that's partially my worry with the current UK government though - that they'll happily open the doors to all of Hong King's academic talent and professionals... and everyone else will simply be left behind as "not good enough on paper" to warrant letting in.

[Apple Daily: Hong Kong pro-democracy paper announces closure
Hong Kong's largest pro-democracy paper Apple Daily
has announced its closure,
in a blow to media freedom in the city.
The tabloid's offices were raided last week over
allegations that several reports had breached
a controversial national security law.
Police detained the chief editor and five other
executives, and company-linked assets were frozen.
The publication had become a leading critic of
the Hong Kong and Chinese leadership.
The Apple Daily management said that
"in view of staff members' safety",
it had decided "to cease operation immediately
after midnight" - making Thursday's publication
