[Radical new climate change commitments
will set the UK on course to cut carbon
emissions by 78% by 2035, Boris Johnson
will announce this week.
Hitting the targets would require more
electric cars, low-carbon heating,
renewable electricity and, for many,
cutting down on meat and dairy.
For the first time, climate law will be
extended to cover international
aviation and shipping.
But Labour said the government
had to match "rhetoric with reality".
It urged Mr Johnson to treat
"the climate emergency as the
emergency it is" and show "greater ambition".]

Electric Cars are Still Over Priced.

They could speed it up very quickly and (relatively) cheaply by offering guaranteed government backed low interest finance (let's say 5%) on electric/hybrid cars. People would be all over it.

there is always inertia with these things. Slow to pick up then full steam ahead. We are still at the pickup stage, but also much further along than we were a few short years ago. Boris can set as many ambitious targets as he likes, confident in the knowledge that it won't be his responsibility when the time comes

What's the point in electric cars if there aren't widely used sustainable energy sources?

It's laughable that biomass fuel is being paraded around as a good thing and being called "carbon neutral" because the trees are "replaced" - it takes decades for a new tree to catch up with the oxygen-creation of old ones which are cut down.

With trees carbon-capture is more important than oxygen-creation (80% of oxygen generation happens in the ocean) but I'd imagine the principle is sound enough - although in theory it's not a problem if they are planting new biomass and ONLY using/replacing that biomass, and leaving the existing trees alone (tropics and ancient forests).

The answer however until efficient renewables become viable for 100% of power is Nuclear but people get a bit nervous about it .

But yeah there's no point going for full electric cars on the road until the grid can actually handle 30+ million electric vehicles plugging in every night, and do so without increasing carbon output from electricity generation.

Nuclear is the best option, people can choose of be scared of it if they wish, but I'm sure we're all scared of a future where we can only breathe via fishbowls on our heads lol
