Inspired by one of Alfs threads where we discussed Nirvana's cover of The Man who sold the World being better than David Bowies original (when you actually type The man who sold the World it even brings up Nirvana's version first so they clearly agree :p )
The Man who sold the world

My next suggestion is Killing me Softly, imo The Fugees cover is the best version of this song

It always takes me back to that awful movie with Hugh Grant where the kid sings it. :worry:

Another one from Robyn Adele Anderson covering the Carly Rae Jepsen song "Call me maybe" a vintage jazz version.
This girl doesn't need to dance about twerking her arse, she just oozes class and sex appeal stood on the spot. Love the piano playing in this too.

I'm not gonna get roped into disagreeing with others' opinions so I'll just state my own
Definitely seconding GiRTh's All Along the Watchtower shout, the Hendrix version is one of my top ten songs of all time.
As for others... (I'll spoiler them individually so they don't take up too much space on the page)

This one's close because I genuinely do love the simplicity and the "doo-wop" of the original but I fell in love with the song because of the cover, and think its dark twist on it is inspired.

Same person covering the same song, 32 years apart... definitely suits the theme of the song, and the older, wiser Mitchell wins out for me.

I know it's a matter of time before someone says "Hurt" (and rightly so) so I'll opt for another cover he released at the same time: adore his voice on the U2 song, and whilst the original is great, I prefer the cover.

Look, obviously the song was a lovely ballad and that's nice and everything, but an electropop Christmas #1 that's gayer than Christmas itself? I'll take that over Elvis and his toilet any day. One of my all-time favourite songs as well... just so, so joyous.

I think Livia got me onto this one... she must have posted it in a thread like this a while back, because it was a new discovery for me at the time. I've never looked into kd lang beyond this but oh my god what a perfect version of an already-oft-covered song. This one's tricky though because the Cohen version is already magical.

Not given you Pet shop boys over Elvis, Shaun.
I'm gonna have a listen to a couple of those though. Only ever heard "Sea of love" by Phil Phillips, so I'll have a listen to the other version.
I'm gonna listen to that Cash version of "One" which is my favourite U2 song.

not arsed if you do give it pal x
I've heard that Johnny Cash version before, I remember it now.
Good call, I agree, that's better than the U2 version.
...Cassandra Wilson’s cover isn’t better than the Neil Young original but it’s a pretty excellent cover of one of my all time favourite songs so I’ll post it anyway...

**** offEven Trent Reznor himself has said he loves Cash's version so if the man who wrote the song is saying that then '**** off' sounds a bit hysterical

My two favorites of all time:
Shaun called it with KD Lang and hallelujah
Girth called it with Johnny Cash and hurt
I'd also add, Valerie by Amy Winehouse

I don't really care, Reznor's version of the song is a lot better, and works really well within the context of the album.
