View Full Version : UK sends Royal Navy patrol ships to monitor Jersey blockade
The UK will send two Royal Navy patrol vessels to monitor a planned blockade of Jersey's main port amid a fishing rights row with France.
PM Boris Johnson pledged his "unwavering support" for the island, a Crown dependency 14 miles (22km) off France in the English Channel.
It came after the French government threatened to cut off Jersey's electricity over a post-Brexit dispute.
The row emerged over a new licensing system for French fishing vessels.
The system - introduced by the Government of Jersey under the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) - requires French fishing boats to provide evidence of previous activity in Jersey's waters.
But French authorities said "new technical measures" for fishing off the Channel Islands had not been communicated to the EU, rendering them "null and void".
Downing Street said Mr Johnson believed "any blockade would be completely unjustified" and that the Navy vessels would be deployed as a "precautionary measure".
The prime minister held talks with the Chief Minister of Jersey John Le Fondré and Minister of External Affairs Ian Gorst.
The threat to cut off Jersey's electricity supply - 95% of which is delivered by underwater cable from France - was made by French Maritime Minister Annick Girardin.
She told the French parliament that new rules governing access to Channel Islands waters were unacceptable - and that France was "ready to use... retaliatory measures".
"I am sorry it has come to this [but] we will do so if we have to," she said.

Good to have the tory skengman back. All of this nonsense is a result of brexit. We were told that germany and france held all the power in the EU ( which was a lie), so why would they want to leave. It wouldn't be England v France ayway, it wuld be England vs the EU,
You thinking any other powerful country in the EU will see what has already happened to our lost jobs, our fishermen, our farmers, our poorer areas propped up by EU funding, and think "yeah, give us a bit of that action".
It's absolute nonsense, we are being destroyed by this act of self harm, and you don't even acknowledge reality.

Well there are 2 issues at play here; currently covid is masking what an absolute clusterfcuk brexit has been, but if you won't accept my word for it, do a bit of research on what brexit has meant for our financial sector, what the reality of it has been for our fishermen, how EU companies are stopping buying from us because it's too expensive and much more hassle, how we've pushed Ireland back to the brink. summed it up perfectly
their using covid is a lame excuse to make people forget about brexit aftermath
also towards that deadline of leaving the EU, UK had seen quite a lot of companies abandoning them to put their main offices in EU nations
brexit was already horrible for the middle class in UK, but now also the covid aftermath another financial blow quite likely for the middle class
but not the upper class/super rich since well they won't feel a thing financially from either brexit or covid economical troubles
as for back on topic towards this, well everyone can dislike France and spout their hate onto them, but where we two nations fight, two have the blame
i'm neutral in this, and i am on nobodies side here, although i have to defend France's Macron given i quite like him, his efforts at the coronacrisis (not his fault that majority of french are vaccine hesitant or not wanting to obey simple corona measure rules)
whereas UK/France fight, i can see into years to come, better relations for USA/France (USA and EU in general)
don't think USA will be UK's trade ally either
had to have had this said, my thoughts on brexit, on UK's fingerpointing at EU mistakes (yes EU made mistakes but lets not think of UK as a perfect nation without any mistakes)
We've sent them packing with their tails between their frogs legs.Let’s hope they don't move at a snails pace.

We had 1 English Supplier in work and we've had to stop using them since Brexit unfortunately
On a personal level I've bought a few bits and pieces online but anything over €25 you are likely to get caught for big import taxes (which my mom learned the hard way this week :skull: ) so I wouldn't really buy anything big from the UK anymore. Amazon used to be great for getting stuff way cheaper than here but not anymore. Luke wanted a face cam for his PS5 (which has to be the Sony one, no other is compatible) with taxes, duty and delivery it would have cost around €69 on Amazon, it cost be €49 to buy here with free delivery.
the trade both ways between the eu and the uk has dive bombed since brexit and its not related to covid because the only really affected areas there have been leisure and hospitality

Exactly. If we had an honest and impartial media, folks would be well aware of how disastrous this has been but we don't, so attitudes like Adams will persist. That isn't a slight on Adam either, because unless you search for it and know what to look for, everything is being swept under the carpet by the same media organisations that helped the government lie us into this position to begin with.

I'm not diminishing the effort of our pilots, armed forces, and our outstanding intelligence service, coupled with the development of radar, but this romanticism over the facts is weird.
everyone always diminishes the role the russians played in the 2nd world war. They took a large proportion of hitlers attention away from other fronts and lost millions of people defending moscow. That contributed as much as anything else to britain holding on

We won the battle for the skies? Our RAF prevented German air superiority over our country but that was where our superiority ended.
The German invasion of Russia mixed with the hubris of Hitler thinking he could take them in a couple of months was basically the beginning of the end for them. He then had to plough resources into the eastern front. Also, ironically, Hitlers fondness for Britain and it's empire was another main factor in us never being occupied.

A couple of posts ago you said it was a 33% equal share, and now you've already pushed the US to a bit part  All we had the ability to do was hang in there, but without the US we had nowhere near enough man power and machinery to get back on to mainland Europe, and that would be the bare minimum required. Out of us, Russia, and the US, we were by far the least consequential.
We had the intelligence and without that Russia would have probably gone under aa they were being pushed back but they had space in there favour and Hotler didn't know how to deal with so much land mass that the Russians were our maneuvering them and we would have had to have retreated I think you are underestimating the role of the British empire even when we had the like of India and parts of Africa in to help us the only thing we didn't have was the numbers

Denver this just isn't true. Russia weren't able to hold on because of our intelligence, they were able to hang on because it's a huge place, and most importantly, winter hit. Hitler got it badly wrong.
We were on our arse at this stage, and were a million miles away from being able to initiate any kind of counter offensive.
