Dad who wrote scathing letter to Brearley about race focus:
‘Someone had to’
A father fed up with an elite Manhattan prep school’s heavy-handed focus on
race won’t re-enroll his daughter in the fall, accusing the school of trying to
“brainwash” kids with woke philosophies rather than teaching them how to
think on their own.
In a scathing 1,700-word letter Andrew Gutmann mailed to 650 families — a
screed since gone viral — he blasted the posh, all-girls Brearley School’s
“cowardly and appalling lack of leadership [for] appeasing an anti-intellectual,
illiberal mob.”

Chelsea Clinton, Tina Fey, Drew Barrymore and Steve Martin are among
those with daughters enrolled at Brearley. Tuition is $54,000 per year.
Famous alumnae of the 761-student, K-12 school include Caroline Kennedy,
Jill Clayburgh, Téa Leoni and Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney.
Gutmann said it was all too much for him and he finally put his pen to paper.
“Someone had to do it,” he said. “Someone had to light the match.
Everyone’s so afraid of cancel culture. We’re going to destroy the city, we’re
going to destroy the country.”
Gutmann said the school managed to sneak in the increased emphasis on
race during the pandemic when everyone was distracted. He said the once-
rigorous curriculum completely changed over the summer.
“I don’t know who’s really driving this and nobody does,” he said.

Bari Weiss slams her former employer The New York Times and The Washington Post for
'ignoring the ideological takeover of schools' because they too have been 'transformed' by
woke culture
Bari Weiss was an opinion editor at The New York Times until July 2020
She resigned in protest at a 'hostile work environment' and 'illiberal culture'
At the beginning of this year Weiss began a substack newsletter
On Monday she published criticism of her former employer's 'woke' culture
Weiss referenced two exclusive NYC schools where 'woke' curriculum has sparked rows
A parent at Brearley and a teacher at Grace spoke out against their schools
She said The New York Times was ignoring the debate about the city's schools and curriculum

Former New York Times editor Bari Weiss has accused her previous employer
of being too 'woke' to cover the growing row about New York City's private
schools, after a teacher and a parent objected to the curriculum in two of the
city's most elite academic institutions.
Paul Rossi, a math teacher, was told on Sunday that he had been 'relieved of
his teaching duties' by Grace Church School in the East Village of Manhattan
following his April 13 essay published on Weiss' site.
Andrew Gutmann, whose daughter attended The Brearley School, an all-girls
private school in New York City, located on the Upper East Side, wrote a
letter, also on April 13, to other parents complaining about efforts to
'brainwash' students with 'woke' philosophies rather than teaching them how
to think on their own.

Angry racists don't like being reminded that their country was built on racism and that it forms an integral part of their history. Anyone who would pull their kids out of a school because they were taught not to be a a racist **** is a twat and a **** parent, as is anyone who would agree with him.
…I can’t understand why someone would pay $54,000 per year for such an exclusive and ‘elite’ school and not be happy with it so he’s done the right thing and obviously is looking for an exclusive and elite school that better fits his values….it doesn’t feel like much of a story to me…

If they actually are bringing race into every discussion, that does make for a rather narrow view of the world. It's a bit regressive to make people think every aspect of today's world is racist.
….a very wealthy man has chosen to spend his $54,000 per year on a different school for his child(ren)…and the reverberations and backlash across the world are beyond anything we could have imagined…

Left-wing activism was the norm at the the school, according to Gutmann, who said family were pressured to "advocate for Black Lives Matter."

Their school their rules their principles. Maybe he should try home schooling if he wants to shield his daughter from learning anything that makes him personally uncomfortable? Judging by the clientele listed for the school I don't think they will be missing his money.

Well clearly HE HIMSELF didn't know the ethics and teachings of the school if he sent his child there in the first place, for him to now bitch and moan.

You clearly didn’t read the letter, he has spent over 350,000 so far on his daughters education.

His daughter has been at the school for years so obviously the ethics and teachings have changed. Maybe you should do your homework before judging someone....

By making the decision to remove her from a school HE doesn't like :skull: Nothing in his hysterical interview about how his daughter feels towards her school.

Folks see what they want to see. He does talk about educational freedom, but I presume he doesn't want his daughter to jump from a high building so she can find out about gravity for herself, and the list of name calling and lies about BLM is seen as fine, because y'know...
Schools and the education system have never been democratic institutions, otherwise I would never have attended any geography classes.
I think he does have a point somewhere in there, he just reveals his true motives. Besides which, to not teach about racial justice in the present climate would be weird, and just because he may not like the conclusions, he doesn't get to dictate.

Exactly in bold
I imagine her feelings don't concern him much, what if she likes the school and has friends there.
As he is paying for his daughters education, he has a right to decide if it's appropriate. Without knowing how specifics are handled at the school, it's surely impossible for anyone not involved to make accurate judgements on whether his complaints are justified or not
