hospital with serious injuries after a cable car
plunged to the ground near Lake Maggiore in northern Italy.
The capsule fell from its cable close to the second last pillar
near the summit of the Mottarone mountain with 15 people on board
at about midday (11am BST) on Sunday,

It needs to be checked more often.

[The cable car service had recently reopened following
the lifting of coronavirus restrictions, Reuters news agency reported.]

Any time i have travelled on a cable car i've thought it looked very dodgy, i just don't think they are fundamentally very safe

Horrible way to go

Could be the Tension of the cable
as it was left idle
for many months

Any Normal Checking not going on.

[The cable line was closed in 2014 for a
€4.4 million renovation before opening
again in 2016, and had only reopened
on 24 April after COVID lockdowns forced
the closure of ski lifts across Italy last year.]

€4.4 million renovation

Thats how much spent on it
2016 it was open again.

So Maybe because of the Covid Gap
something went wrong.

The Car or the Cable
or both.

….both children having sustained such extensive injuries …the 9yr old boy sadly died of heart failure, he had multiple fractures…the 5yr old has injuries to head, chest and legs…

…some details about some of the victims… Roberta Pistolato was a doctor working on the frontline of Italy's battle against Covid…she was celebrating her 40th birthday with her boyfriend Angelo Gasparro, 45…

…I think maybe 15 would seem around maximum capacity for a mountain cable, Jax…

I am sure they said the car could hold 40 so it was nowhere near capacity, probably due to social distancing? so many more lives saved maybe

from the link

Corriere della Sera said rescue efforts have been made more difficult by the fact that the cabin, which has a capacity of 40, fell into a wood in an inaccessible area.

Well i've been on many cable cars in the past with a few people in but i don't think i'd like to be in one with 39 other people.

No I think some emergency back up brakes were disabled, two people were arrested at the time

i think the long lay off won't have helped for sure. I expect to see a lot more maintenance related issues appearing over the summer. Another good reason not to head abroad this year

Italy's public broadcaster Rai has faced strong criticism for airing leaked CCTV footage of a fatal cable car crash that killed 14 people.

The cabin is seen nearing its final stop before suddenly rearing up, then speeding back down the mountain and crashing to the ground.

The prosecutor in the case spoke of "the absolute inappropriateness" of publishing the footage.

The head of Rai TV said he was "deeply shocked" by the decision to show it.

Five families were on board the car when it crashed, including two children who were among the dead.

Five-year-old Eitan Biran was the sole survivor when the main cable holding the car snapped on 23 May. He lost his parents and two-year-old brother, originally from Israel, and his great grandparents.

Prosecutors say the emergency brake, which could have prevented the accident, had been intentionally disabled. The car reversed at over 100km/h (62mph) on a support cable, passing a support pylon and then plummeting to the ground and rolling down the mountain.

The footage is pretty horrifying. So close to making it to safety and then it all goes wrong. There cant have been any survivors.
