Our boiler is on our last legs but I am failing to find any alternative so it looks like gas it is and 10K ... I mean...

To be fair, you can't beat a nice coal fire. Although I assume that's a carbon no-no :joker:.
…yeah the ‘warm enough’ thing for the proposed new methods is something that I’ve read about a little while ago…that new home insulation regulations atm wouldn’t meet what it would need to so that has to be looked at as well…it all seems a little unclear atm and very this government…we want to ban gas boilers as a target goal but we have no idea…let’s get a slogan, people .?..but only 3 words mind you ….
These new boilers need you to drill a ****ing deep hole into the earth to provide the heat for it, so i can see that costing a few bob

Geothermal is the future though bots :hee:. Not on an individual home scale though I wouldn't think, but if we can make the process efficient and clean, it's an effectively endless energy source that's much more stable than things like wave/wind, and much more "capturable" than solar.

can't say i'm particularly enthusiastic about turning my utility room into the new mount etna

Today the Government is pushing this Very Limited
£5,000 Grant vouchers
to help folks like Cherie?
Only 90,000
[The government announced that
the £450m Boiler Upgrade Scheme,
which is part of the more than £3.9bn funding to
cut carbon from heating and buildings,
will be used to help it reach its target
for all new heating system installations
to be low carbon by 2035.]
[The government insisted families
will not be forced to remove their
existing fossil fuel boilers.]

Denmark doing better schemes.
the new 5k grant brings the price down to what a basic boiler would cost, which is much more acceptable than an interest free loan. Obviously if your house is bigger you will need a bigger heat pump in the same way you would need a bigger boiler
However, a cost that isn't even mentioned is that these new heat pumps have a requirement that your house meets a minimum insulation standard, which i'm guessing all but new builds don't come close to

I dont think the issue is with price, listening to people who actually have heat pumps installed they are not particularly effective, need rads twice the size of what we have now, and you can't open the windows in winter?

I have a heat pump. I wouldn't want to go with any other source of heat now. The best thing about it is that it not only heats when it's cold... it cools when it's hot.

its very confusing tbh, can you open your windows in winter? and is your house super well insulated and do you have big rads as they seem to be prerequisites of what is needed
But only for 90,000
over 3 years.
yeah, people dont change their boilers very often and they expect the price to have dropped a lot in 3 years, so it's perfectly reasonable

I suppose it's like opening the window when you have air conditioning on... it'll work, but not quite as efficiently. Personally I like a window open...
I used to have ordinary white rads, now they're more like old fashioned cast radiators and we have a couple of upright radiators too, say 2m tall by .75m wide.
We were quite well insulated already although we had a new front door had a new loft lid fitted. It was a bit of an upheaval getting the system fitted but it was really worth it. We have solar panels on the south side of the roof too, so our heating costs are really low.

I would love to try it tbh

£5k Grant is for England and Wales
Scotland has to find their own money bonus.

I'd definitely recommend it. I had oil fired central heating before (there's hardly anyone hooked up to gas in the rural bits of Norfolk) and it just doesn't compare to a heat pump.
