Actually, I don't agree with the majority of them voting for this.
However they voted to remove it from for their time there, THEIR common room.
They should be able to say who and what is in their common room.
They've just had it removed.
Their reasoning not what I'd agree with but more of them voted to have it removed.
It's a bit rich of politicians making noises about this and disrespect for the Queen, when we operate a Parliament, where all MPs have to swear an oath of allegiance to the Queen, yet the Commons in parliament is the one place in her realm the Queen isn't allowed to enter voluntarily and is in fact barred from.
Utter tripe.

Anyone outraged over a picture being taken down needs to really evaluate themselves.
If a picture of a little old lady offends you, you need your head examined and you need to reevaluate your life.

They want it removed because ‘she represents recent colonial history’.
They haven’t a clue (Oxford - really?) They should want it kept up then because she is the one who has done more than any other single person to change Empire into the mutually supportive, multi racial and wonderfully diverse institution of the Commonwealth.
if i remember my history correctly, it was Thomas Wolsey (the head of the catholic church in england) that founded Oxford University, and he basically raised the funds by taxing the english poor who couldnt afford it and by taking bribes from hostile foreign powers to sway the opinion of Henry 8th. So Oxford University isn't historically renowned for it's moral stance going right back to it's beginnings

To be fair, University in the UK isn’t as pay-to-win as the US, anyone can go to Oxbridge if they get the grades. It doesn’t cost six-figure sums or require scholarships like the big US schools.
Not that there isn’t still an element of privilege of course - kids from better off homes and schools have an advantage in getting the best grades - but it shouldn’t really be ASSUMED. I know a couple of people from “normal backgrounds” who went to Oxford/Cambridge. My wife could have gone to Oxford for her masters but uprooting the kids to Engerland was not an option :hee:.

So?
The nationality of one of the students and the reason they didn't want that particular decoration in their common room is really neither here nor there.
The next gen of students in the common room will no doubt vote on another change of decor in the future. The portrait is in storage, it's not been burned or vandalised.

I don't get why Tory supporters are so loyal. The tories are literally giving millions to their donors using public funds, and it's all sham deals.
The tories are handing over money that could have gone towards more equipment and resources and instead they gave it to their friends and it's okay because a bunch of tory supporting sheep will pretend that's them making 'snap, life saving decisions.'
Tory Supporters must have no self respect to excuse the tories trampling all over them like that.

…tbf, this is a really perfect example of how it’s less about news or facts etc and more about creating outrage …facts/news etc don’t create the talking points, it’s outrage that does because it’s outrage that gathers into a collective so easily and so quickly…it’s a willingness to genuinely believe that if a picture is changed in a common room that none of us ever knew was there anyway…somehow there is a bigger meaning that national concern needs to represent….the media reported more detail around the pic being removed and stored and it’s a two way thing…it’s not just how the media report, it’s how it’s all absorbed as well …
A few years ago, in about 2013, they bought a print of a photo of the Queen to decorate their common room.
…also interesting what Marsh said in that outrage is often used to divert that ‘meanwhile in other news…’ stuff….

This is my point too Ammi.
I mean the rag that is used so often on here to supposedly make valid extreme points like the Mail..
Even worse those tabloid trash.
They long ago stopped being 'NEWS' papers.
They are publications and determinedly by their own choice to be divisive publications.
Avoiding real news, that is negative to their own agendas.
The duty of a real news industry should be to present the news as it is.
Good and bad.
Not how they want it to be.
The press particularly have just got shamefully worse.
I actually think we have the worst press possible now..
Why people waste at least hundreds of pounds a year, every year on the gutter trash they are, astounds me..
I've long held the view if someone quotes the press to me it's going to be more likely wrong than right.

it is absolutely a non story  What it does is highlight how much the media bait people into outrage
…it isn’t just the media to bait into outrage, though….I commented on this story just recently….

…because it was intimated that students had caused substantial actual damage to their university property and a ‘fake’ picture shown of an abandoned building room which had no bearing on the real story …and that and those students became the focus of ‘outrage’ very quickly …but I don’t think that was media led ….it was obvious that the damaged room didn’t look like a recent thing and a few seconds of googling the image would have confirmed that…we talk about ‘cancel culture’ a lot and become outraged about that as well so frequently……but I’m finding it very interesting to observe ‘outrage culture’ which to me seems to be a growing thing from different sources of media and non media…
