The position is 'only open to black, Asian and
ethnically diverse candidates'
Positive discrimination is illegal but
'positive action' is allowed for trainee roles]

This will not be debated on BBC AM.

There's nothing positive about racist discrimination.

If it was an apprentice or just a minimum wage position it would be almost excusable, but proper jobs shouldn't have racial barriers.

For a position like this why bother restricting applications? If you have a preference in mind for the selection then just make that selection . I can see the argument for “wasting people’s time” but for an unpaid trainee position I don’t think that’s a huge concern. Just be clear from the outset that there are expected to be a lot of applicants, which should avoid getting anyone’s hopes up too high.

Racism works both ways, no?

Both? There are more than two races. Black people can be racist against Indians, who can be racist against Chinese ... Who can all be racist against whites.

There's no both ways about it, anyone can be either a perpetuator or victim of racism.

It's not about being racist against honkys. It's the opposite in fact because the crackers are over represented in most industries, so trying to find a bit of balance from a cross section of all British communities isn't racist.

I don't remember seeing this kind of outrage when Muslim, Indian, or African names aren't even given interviews.

It's about over representation, not discrimination.

Why does race need to be highlighted though? I mean, by law of averages more white people will apply for most jobs based purely on the fact the the UK population is over 80% white.

We may look somewhat different on the outside, but on the inside we're the exact same. Isn't that what it should be about? Equal, never treated lesser, never treated more than, equal.

Im not outraged or anything, the BBC get to do what they like, it's their Corporation they can hire who they like, i just don't see this as progression. The opposite in fact.

Logic would say hire the best person for the job, no matter race.

Because history and experience have proved that best person for the job doesn't really exist a lot of the time, and studies have shown that using the exact same CV but with different names yields different results. Maybe their last 15 trainees were white dudes, so are looking to add different experiences into the mix.

and studies have shown that using the exact same CV but with different names yields different results.

Do you have a link to any of these "studies"? Without seeing their methodology, it's hard to know how trustworthy they are - names like Shoniqua and Precious probably would be overlooked in favour of Emily and Tarquin. Just like how CVs from Billy-Bob and Jaiden/Braiden/Kaiden and Shantelle would probably end up in the bin.

If they used trashy names for one and nice names for another, of course the results will be unbalanced.

That's an interesting way to imprint your own biases onto a study you'd forgotten had even existed 30 seconds ago.

Besides, there wasn't really any difference between non-white names, the only difference was white/non-white.

You're nearly there - you're right that it isn't the fault of white dudes that are already on the scheme, but I think you miss the point of discrimination versus over representation.

18k is minimum wage if it's a full time job?

Depends. Most 9-5 jobs don’t actually pay the lunch hour (or at least don’t legally have to) so a full time working week is actually only 35 hours, which comes out at around 16.5k salary

Assuming lunch hour isn’t paid, £18k works out as about £10/hour [/nitpick]

When a Daily Mail commentators article criticises Boris or Right Wing policies, which they do when they feel its deserved

:umm2: If the DM comments start criticizing Boris you know he's really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, REALLY ****ed something up.

Or it's the rare occasion he's done something they find a bit too leftie or woke. "Boris has agreed to increase benefits for the scrounging parents of severely disabled children the DISGUSTING COMMUNIST!!!"

As for the other suggestion - they don't criticise right-wing policies. It simply doesn't happen. Maybe you'll find those comments if you "sort by most down-voted" or something but otherwise, this is a fantasy.

I'm not exaggerating in saying that the DM comments can be held up as literally the absolute worst of the internet. A cess pitt straight out of some ghoulish imagination in hell. It makes Twitter look like a nice walk on the beach. Heck, it makes the YouTube comments section - another hell hole -look nuanced and well-considered.

You’ve got it wrong. I said ‘commentators ARTICLES’ as in ‘reporters’ - not the comments, which I NEVER read. Obviously you do.
You also must read the DM every day, otherwise you wouldn’t know what all the articles in the print version are saying. It is one of several papers I take daily.
They even have positive Meghan and Harry news items quite often, which they could leave out if they wanted.

Women are underrepresented at the BBC and they are also underpaid. I wonder whether the BBC thinks they are making up for that by using discriminatory tactics for other under-represented groups? The BBC sees black and white and nothing else.
