I thought the penalties takers were odd. The two players bought on to take take them both missed. Southgate and Rashford tried to be too clever. I agree with Alf, we were far to negative after taking the lead.

Yeah and all the players who missed were black.
Your point, like mine, is just silly at this time
It’s wrong to think they sabotaged it because they are black.
After the weekend we've had....Matthew has gone to bed so deflated .....he has pinned all his hopes on this lifting him. Feel for the team....but they have lifted the country over the last 4 weeks so should rightly be soo proud
…yeah, we lost the match I know and that’s so deflating but we can hold onto the feeling that it’s given us all……the feeling of being united again…?…

Pickford was MVP it could easily have been Italy at 90 minutes.
The only thing you know about football is stamping people's football bets.

Saka has been great…but too young for that pressure. Rashford been on for 5 minutes. I think Southgate was too slow on the substitutes tonight…
However Italy deserved it….so we’ll done Italy.
It’s been fun…to get to a final was a big step and we were all able to have belief.
It’s just hugely disappointing…:bawling:

Aw it's a shame it is deflating but England were pretty poor they had more than enough chances at that extra time. Had a feeling as soon as we went to penalities that we were out

bringing 2 young lads on 1 minute to go and expecting them to take penalties was a big errorExactly. I dont blame either of them.
Southgate has done extremely well and will probably be honoured after being only the 2nd manager to get England to final.
Problem is. he's got a great squad that should reach more finals but I'm not sure his tactics are 'winning' tactics

Why wasn't Sterling one of the kickers?Good question. Shaw too
The moment I saw Rashford take a penalty knowing how unreliable he is . I knew its not gonna happen
Don't blame him though, he'd been on for a minute.
Chellini was their centre back and he was playing in our half for most of the second half. We went far too deep and invited the danger. We should have brought a Grealish or Foden on earlier to give their team something to think about, their defence had it too easy.

As a Welshman, we just don’t support England in football.
However saying that, that was a great game and my heart goes out to Southgate and the team - to come so close yet so far must be torture. Gareth is a fantastic manager. Well done!

We should have brought a Grealish of Foden on earlier to give their team something to think about, their defence had it too easy.Strange the way Southgate uses him. He carries the ball , he gets up field, he wins fouls. The moment I saw us getting behind the ball at the start the 2nd half. We needed Grealish to keep the ball and not let Italy dominate possession. I hated those tactics, but the team did well and will be back

Nothing new, I knew it would go without serious punishment as the Italians love to cheat and foul and get away with stuff
Far too negative when we took the lead, the best team won.
Kane and Rice were superb, Walker was as good as ever.

Croatia are still the World Cup Runner-up (beating us if I remember correctly) so they're not exactly "levels" below us.
And Denmark are in the top 10 in the FIFA rankings aren't they?
Germany you have a point tbf.
And Kane scored in the penalty shootout, plus if Southgate had've done such a bad tactical job against Italy then it wouldn't have gone to penalties imo.
The only mistake I think that Southgate made was his choices on who he had take the penalties (even Maguire was a gamble) but to me anyone expecting England to play like Real Madrid against Italy were getting too carried away imo.

Maybe he was scared that England would lose in normal time if Grealish was brought on earlier?
Also Italy weren't gonna just let us start attacking in their half, maybe they were better as a team than us? Italy's not the kinda team where Southgate/England can just click their fingers and start dominating Italy, whether Grealish was on or not.
Btw Grealish didn't do anything when he came on anyway, it feels like the Media's spreading this Myth that Grealish was gonna be our lord and saviour, but what did he honestly do this tournament?

First half, Harry Kane was the best player on the pitch. Winning everything he was. Headers, free-kicks, blocks. Put a great shift in.
He has to be compared in the same bracket as all the great English forwards.
In my time there's been five World class forwards
Lineker, Shearer, Owen, Rooney and Kane would be the fifth.

I honestly don't see it, imo he is a decent player that the Media are trying to blow up into the English version of Messi, it's embarrassing imo.
Every time I watch Grealish I keep waiting for him to do something that makes me see him as a special player, but I honestly haven't seen it yet.
Imo Villa's only world class player they've got at the moment imo is Martinez as he is a fantastic Goalkeeper that I honestly wish we'd snapped up whilst he was struggling to become Arsenal's number one. Players like Grealish, Mings, Konsa, El Ghazi, and McGinn I see as the grade below, and controversially I just don't rate Ross Barkley at all for any Premier League team, but that's just me personally.

But the post I quoted literally said he should speak out less about school meals and focus more on football, I literally couldn’t care less about football, but it’s great to see someone using a platform for good and for change, and that makes Rashford a winner in my eyes.
Think we should just be grateful that these guys have a lot of years left in them
Foden is the single biggest talent we've had in a long time and we definitely missed him tonight but I also know he'll be around for a long time to comeI like Foden better than Grealish, my type of player is Foden, proper player, his time will come.

He started one game and lasted about 60 minutes then came on for 20 minutes in three games .. now considering it takes ten minutes to get used to the pace of the game ...20 minutes isn’t long enough

Players like Grealish, Mings, Konsa, El Ghazi, and McGinn I see as the grade below, and controversially I just don't rate Ross Barkley at all for any Premier League team, but that's just me personally.I forgot I was talking to a fan of The Blues, and I respect you for that response to a Villain. Honestly it's not because he is a Villa player, I've respected a fair few Villa players over the years, and as I've already said I think that Grealish is a decent player, but do I think that he is the next Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kane, Mbappe, or De Bruyne? Not imo.
And aren't you an Everton fan? Isn't it a bit weird also calling yourself a Villa fan?

Errr no ..
Southgate is all about minimising risk ... Grealish doesn’t contribute as much as Mount for example- to defence or our pressing game so he’ll always be behind him in pecking order

Not someone who's never taken it before.

Can't quite shake the feelings of dejection and frustration. Southgate allowing that penalty roster was completely absurd. Bringing on people who've not played any of the match just to take them... and then they both take shockingly awful penalties? The blame lies squarely with him.
Rashford in particular will get a lot of criticism for the manner in which he attempted his... stuttered run-ups always look daft and his was the worst miss of the night. At least Saka was on target (and against a brilliant Donnarumma).
But all that aside... it's been a brilliant tournament (I'm sure from the neutrals' POV) and England have a bright future ahead of them. We've put many of those omens to bed: Germany, never reaching a final, horrible defence (we conceded two goals all bloody tournament :clap1:), lack of discipline (no red cards), unfortunate injuries... it's been a great England to watch, even if the team selections and substitutions are occasionally bizarre (WHY DID YOU TAKE OFF RICE, GARETH? PHILIPS WAS **** ALL TOURNAMENT!!)
Just sucks that it had to be Bonucci. Racist prick.
the team is so young, they will take a lot of stopping in 18 months at the world cup. I firmly put the blame at Southgates feet for the tactics, particularly in the shoot out. However, i have surprisingly enjoyed watching italy play throughout the tournament and for that alone i think they deserved to squeak it

why put Saka on, UGH worthless player that one, haven't seen one good thing from him the entire tournament
England has a good team, just needs to weed out the weak a bit more ahead of World Cup next year (definitely No Saka, and i would also not select Maguire anymore, expensive player my arse, he also made couple of mistakes, especially in beginning that wrong back pass at goalkeeper)
Italy played a impressive tournament overall, and i like their title win, for Vialli especially, from cancer survivor to being part of this success euro2020 team
i have to be honest, it was a alright tournament, with some surprises here and there (biggest team surprises for me Denmark, Switzerland)
biggest letdown for me, Turkey i had hoped they would do better, i mean i know they can do loads better, but something just wasn't right over there (maybe they need to hire Hakan Sukur as assistent, and Rustu as their goalkeepers coach, to bring in extra experience for all those young players)
most unlucky team, Belgium a shame luck wasn't on their side against Italy, they definitely have a strong great squad, maybe just need to renew/refreshen their defence a bit with some new talent, and i'd say use Mertens a lot more than Eden Hazard, i find him 1000 times better, and i can know this since i've followed him since Utrecht, PSV and now also in Serie A

This will be a unique World Cup, unchartered territory, so any team could win it.

It was dirty, yes. But that’s what you call a professional foul. Most players in that situation would do the same if they knew there was no chance of beating their opponent to the ball, and even more so in the later stages of a cup final.

Saka had a good tournament and you can't blame him.
With Rashford and Sancho it is unfortunate because they weren't given much time on the pitch during the tournament, and then were asked to take penalties at the end by Southgate. So that is extra pressure.
You could say Southgate was trying to be too clever, but if it had worked it would have been seen as a genius move.

the 0-1 was genius i thought
clever play from Trippier, and also great of Kane to get those 3 defenders near him to fool them the ball was meant for him and not Shaw, some great captainship from The Hurricane
and great executed goal by Shaw, because sometimes you'd expect wild shots from defenders but perfect placement towards goal :clap2:
Mount also played better last night than in other matches of the tournament which is great to see

Just a shame it took Southgate 24 hours to go public and state that he chose the penalty takers and the order of taking them
It was , of course , sadly too late to prevent Sterling , Henderson and Grealish getting slaughtered in the media for sitting back letting the youngsters take the hit .

I'm sure people have very short minds.
They didn't play great the second half. Italy's defence was **** hot and were constantly closing them down.
Regardless of penalties.
If they had played well enough then we wouldn't have even got to penalties. Whether Gareth made the right decision or not.

I agree, the possession in the 2nd half was woeful....we knew that Italy have a passing game and hold on to the ball better than any other team, even Spain, and we didn't capitalise enough when we had the ball.
Having said that...it was still too late to bring on 2 potential penalty takers with 1 minute to go.

Our early goal probably surprised Southgate as much as everyone else .... but when Mancini reacted and changed things we/Southgate just carried on even though they were completely dominating possession .
So with Italy HAVING to suddenly change their tactics and coming to us more - just Imagine if Southgate had been proactive and taken off Trippier and replaced him with Sancho and gone for two , three or four more goals
