King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima visited Valkenburg, flown to Limburg by helicopter immediately after Prinses Amalia's graduation ceremony of her school

There, the army has been brought in to build an emergency bridge over the river Geul after the original bridge was washed away. The Geul itself has been turned into a wild river dozens of metres wide, which has brought muddy water to low-lying parts of the town.

‘We will only see what the damage is when the water has gone down,’ local Anita Auijlen told Dutch media. ‘We had just started painting downstairs and we’ll have to start again.’

In nearby Meerssen, Michel Lillu said the cellar of his home was completely filled with water. Lillu has lived in the town for 27 years and dealt with floods before. ‘It’s not nice, but these things happen,’ he said. ‘And then what do you do, but clear it up?’

PM Mark Rutte had given his sympathies for neighbouring countries as well as willing to help out wherever possible, and has said affected people in Limburg can always contact The Hague to report any damage they have, and they will be helped out very quickly in restoring their homes, without any costs for those people since this officially was called a Disaster by him, and when officially a disaster, there are no costs for restoring damage to homes, cars, or people who need new refrigerators

It’s only going to get worse for the rest of this decade and into the 2030’s. Governments need to be investing heavily in flood defences.

They won’t, of course, they’ll wait until it happens and then bawl “no one could have known!!”.

Yes the masses love a scapegoat.

Emissions data.

And that huge chunk that’s China is largely due to being the manufacturing base for Western consumption.

Crimson Dynamo

Analysis this week showed that over a quarter of the Amazon rainforest now emits more carbon than it absorbs.

Most of the emissions are caused by fires, many deliberately set to clear land for beef and
soy production. But even without fires, hotter temperatures and droughts mean the south-
eastern Amazon has become a source of CO2, rather than a sink.

The government of Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, has been harshly criticised for
encouraging more deforestation, which has surged to a 12-year high, while fires hit
their highest level in June since 2007.

user104658
16-07-2021, 11:54 AM
Yes the situation with the Amazon is terrible but it has become “a net contributor” by a thin margin. How people are interpreting that as “all of this is because of the Amazon” I have no idea, when the simple fact is that the #1 contributors to carbon emissions by a mile are the US and Europe.

Imagine being like “Hey this is all your fault! You chopped down the thing that was sucking up all of our carbon emissions :fist: “

''a local in the village Arcen reinforces his garden wall''

The high volumes of water which have caused flooding in southern parts of Limburg reached the north of the province on Saturday, with evacuations in Roermond and Venlo.

Some 10,000 people in Venlo and several thousand in Roermond were told to leave their homes overnight as a precaution. In some places, dykes and river walls have been reinforced with sandbags by the army working together with volunteers in an effort to keep out the flood waters.

The water level in Venlo is expected to reach its peak at 7pm on Saturday evening and could last until Sunday evening, officials say.

In the far south, where hundreds of people had been evacuated following a reported breach in the Juliana canal wall, officials now say water and sand had been seeping through at the bottom of the dyke instead.

Nevertheless, the floods have caused widespread damage. Valkenburg was hit by the worst of the flooding and one bridge was washed away. There the clean-up operation is now under way.

https://www.dutchnews.nl/wpcms/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/D00311E1-99C1-48BB-AB7A-16F00EAC34A2_1_201_a-560x425.jpeg
''clean up operation underway in Valkenburg''

Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte has visited the worst affected parts of Limburg on Friday evening and said the country had been fortunate not to have any deaths, as has happened in Germany and Belgium.

Climate change

Asked if the floods should be looked at in relation to climate change, Rutte said that was ‘undoubtedly the case’.

‘There really is something going on here,’ Rutte said, before going on to say it would not be appropriate to make firm statements at present. ‘We need to find out together how it is that so much water fell for so long,’ the prime minister said.

German politicians earlier made a link between the floods, which have cost over 100 lives in Germany, and climate change, as have Belgian and EU leaders.

Downstream

Meanwhile the water and safety boards in Brabant and Gelderland provinces say they are not expecting any problems when the high water volume from both Limburg and Germany reaches them via the Maas and the Rhine.

https://www.dutchnews.nl/wpcms/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/ANP-434022955-560x345.jpg
''Arcen, near Venlo as seen by a drone''

‘The flood plains will fill up, but that is what they are meant to do,’ a spokesman for Gelderland-Zuid safety board said.

Although the river levels will rise considerably, they will be well below the maximum level the dykes can take. ‘The Maas does not have much space when it enters the Netherlands and all the rain water from the hilly region is an added impact,’ Freek Jochems of the Rivierland water board told website Nu.nl.

‘But the river is much wider in Brabant and Gelderland so the water level does not rise as much,’ he said. ‘We are expecting record volumes of water, but without any major problems.’

Campsites

Some cattle may have to be moved to higher ground and campsites along the edge of the rivers will have to be evacuated, Nu.nl said.

Footpaths and cycle lanes across the flood plains are also being closed to allow small animals to get to safety without being disturbed by walkers and cyclists.
