[Iceland stores and BP petrol stations are the first to
be shut by pingdemic: More than 20% of shop staff
could be isolating in weeks - with 1.7M people 'pinged'
already - as business leaders vent their fury on
conference call and plead for action NOW

Iceland said it closed 'a number of stores'
due to staff having to self-isolate after
being notified by NHS app
The frozen food chain revealed
1,000 employees - four per cent of its
workforce - have had to stay at home
It said that in the next few days it
will start to draft in another 2,000 people
to fill temporary roles in stores
Meanwhile BP said it has had to temporarily
close some of its stations due to petrol and
diesel supply issues
The oil company said the problems were
being caused by a shortage of lorry
drivers that had been 'pinged'
And M&S warned one in five - 20% - of its
workforce could be isolating at home
by the middle of next month]

They are fast to fill empty shelves with beer

So they never look empty.

I've asked my sources :hee: and apparently long-term shortages are unlikely, however long-term price increases on food are very likely... because the problem is haulage. Non-UK drivers don't want to come to the UK but will do so if offered enough money, thus, haulage prices have basically doubled.

And the main reason is general Brexit/Covid stuff not the pingdemic... it's being scapegoated. This is Brexit, and this is forever. Put aside an extra £50 a week for your food shopping because prices are going to be permanently hiked at some point.

My Tesco shop arrived as usual yesterday.
Hubby had no problems shopping at other shops on Tuesday.
No doubt these headlines will now start the ruddy panic buying again:fist:

supermarkets have already stated its the Pingdemic

Stock shortages aren't because it's at the supermarkets with no one to put it to the shelves - they're also not because of a lack of stock in the country - the stock is in warehouses with a shortage of over 100,000 truck drivers. The current situation has been exacerbated by the "pingdemic" but there was already a shortage of 50k+ because of Brexit.

Basically we rely on the availability of European haulers picking up contracts even for goods made in the UK - and those contracts aren't worth as much because of border delays. It was at tipping point but just squeaking by - with no wiggle room - before the pingdemic... the pingdemic pushed it over the edge and goods are now stuck in warehouses instead of on shelves. It will balance out eventually because we CAN get haulers in - it's just that they're charging double what they used to. Haulage firms pay the haulers double, so they have to charge the supermarkets double, who then have to pass on that cost to the consumer... hence, there will be food on the shelves, but it will cost more. That doesn't happen over-night, the big companies swallow the cost for a while and the price increases will creep in slowly over the course of a few years... next week your £70 shop might cost £71, but keep a receipt from your next "big shop", do the exact same shop in 2023, and it will be very clear.

This is coming directly from someone in a relatively high up management position in haulage down in Dover, not Bob at ASDA, so I'm confident enough in my sources LT. A finger in every pie.

Freezers were fine here. It was some of the chilled dairy products that were missing and alcohol.

Fruit and veg was well-stocked though.

Our Tesco shelves had quite a few glaring gaps again ..

Flour , Sugar . Spam , Corned Beef , Tuna all empty

Fewer shelf stackers and the isles were unusually cluttered with trolleys half filled with new stock

Presumably they have staff self isolating ?

Ive heard that warehouse staff and drivers are supposedly thin on the ground

As TS stated on this thread
there is a massive lack of HGV drivers
that also makes it all worse.

Covid-19 halted the training of new drivers.

…just after ‘freedom day’ as well, more social gatherings will mean larger buying from some so that won’t help…the thing that is least needed is panic buying but …inevitably I fear….

Supermarkets have come out to say it's an isolated problem.

Who cares anyway?

It’s shifting the blame yes but is it scaremongering? It actually feels more like downplaying… a national lack of haulage capacity is a much bigger problem than a lack of supermarket shelf stackers.

The media doesn't need to do much to scaremonger.

A proportion of the British public are moronic. That's the problem.

Fickle as thieves.

Well no and that's always the problem in these situations, like ToiletRollGate and even before Covid with the bread shortage due to "the beast from the east" snowfall. There isn't a problem until everyone starts buying up all of the stock... if people just shopped as normal it wouldn't escalate to being an actual problem. Supermarkets here took MONTHS to fix the "pasta problem" last year, and then when they did, the shelves were overflowing with pasta for further months - presumably because everyone had cupboards and drawers stuffed full of pasta at home.

Same with toilet roll - supermarkets ended up with stacks of "large pack" (24 or even 32 rolls) toilet roll that they couldn't shift! I wonder what the "buzz products" will be this time?

I'm sure there was a crazy egg shortage last time too. And self-raising flour. Everyone discovered baking.
