The word parkin was a popular surname in Yorkshire and means Peter. Parkin is
a gingerbread cake traditionally made with oatmeal and black treacle, which
originated in northern England. Often associated with Yorkshire, particularly the
Leeds area, it is very widespread and popular elsewhere, notably in Lancashire.

[Leeds city council probes local sweet treat parkin
so it can warn school children of its links to
the slave trade... because it is made with SUGAR
Council probing how cake included ingredients that
were gained via slave trade
It will also review how products such as Yorkshire Tea
'are reliant on global trade'
Research will show how parts of recipes
were 'sourced from around the Empire'
Pupils will then be able to learn about
the links through Key Stage 2 materials]

I don't know any other country that makes quite such a business of tearing itself apart over things that no one living had any responsibility for at all.

Most towns in Scotland have an old Italian Cafe that sells Ice cream that has been there since the war. I get my ice cream from the Allan Water Cafe in Bridge of Allan and have done all my life and my mum went there when she was a child as did her Dad. So did/does Andy Murray

…I’m very reluctant to believe any of that story as it’s written, Arista…it feels like such a misinformation and manipulation of words with a purposeful intent to scream WOKE/CANCEL CULTURE …are they filtering our very Parkin tasty treat as well…!!!!!!!!….
….Key Stage 2 children have always, always covered colonialism as part of their curriculum topics for many, many years and Fair Trading products is also a big topic covered…the children write to their local councils so some would have written to Leeds Councils requesting ‘a probe’ from them…they also write to Downing Street and to Buckingham Palace and to many retailers big and small…/..National and local…to talk about the ethics of U.K. products such as sugar and ginger would be two of those…I imagine that’s why they look at Parkin because of the Ginger content as well as the sugar content…(…obviously healthy eating practises and sugar contents etc would be covered across topics in many/most primary schools anyway…)…so there’s that as well….but I really do feel that this story has been ‘spun’ and manipulated and turned and shaken within an inch of truth for that OUTRAGE culture that the DM and other tabloid type stuff are very fond of screaming with their tea and Parkin…

My guilt as a mouthy teen makes me search out some tastier places for my lunch every day, now that I'm getting in a bit.
I must say, a dumpling burger has not been beaten in about 8 months now.
…no they don’t stir it up, Arista…as adults do also…so do children like to know about their products origins and that they’re Fair Trade and that other children just like them or adults like their parents, aren’t being exploited for Parkin cake and such like to have with Yorkshire Tea…that’s not a fair trading world, is it…no one human being should be exploited for the comfort of another…
