View Full Version : Andrew Neil unlikely to return to GB News

The veteran presenter Andrew Neil is highly unlikely to return to GB News, the right-leaning UK television station that he launched, people close to the channel said.
Relations between the 72-year-old broadcaster and its chief executive Angelos Frangopoulos had broken down and Neil was not expected to appear on the station again, the people said. The rift comes as GB News makes a series of changes to its schedule. It has already brought in Nigel Farage, former UK Independence party leader, as a top presenter.
Insiders said there had long been tension between those at the channel who want a right-of-centre yet mainstream alternative to Sky News and BBC News, and others pushing for a more radical platform.

His involvement was one of the only things legitimising it as an actual platform.
He’s on the way out because their tiny viewership would rather see populist Farage and further right content than anything right-of-centre.
Just proof really of what most of us suspected; the channel cannot survive as a centrist alternative to mainstream news channels, and instead has lurched towards its natural state as a sad echo chamber for more heavily right leaning bacon.
Viewership spiked (a little, to about 100k, let’s not get over excited) when Farage started but has continued an inevitable slump since then with viewers dwindling week on week despite heavily featuring Lord and Saviour of the Cholesterol Afflicted, Farage.
Ahh well, maybe they can get another brief viewership spike by hiring Hopkins next? Pier incoming?
… thoughts?

This thread isn’t about GB News in comparison to other channels, it’s about GB News viewers themselves, internally, being apparently more interested in seeing gobby populist right-wing Farage style content than the more measured right of centre content from Andrew Neil, who was seen as (and touted as) the respected professional face that legitimised the channel. He’s now being shunted out sideways because the viewers prefer the more divisive, tribal stuff offered by other presenters.
What’s your thoughts on that Alf?

Andrew Neil? You can't tell me that he didn't know about what Saville was upto at the BBC. I trust none of them.
Andrew Neil realised within 2 weeks that the station was a pile of warm, wet excrement. I couldn't see him staying with them. For me, it's the worst channel i have ever seen on tv and thats really saying something

He strikes me as someone who has noticed the inherent flaws of the modern left culture / reactionary anti-intellectualism that he felt he had no place in, and tried to step away from it… only to frustratingly find himself surrounded by a new set of a comrades stuck in a RIGHT wing culture of reactionary anti-intellectualism.
I feel like it’s quite a common problem these days… to raise reasonable criticisms of one side of politics and find yourself being cheered on by people whose views you generally find repulsive.

I wonder how much longer it'll last, bets anyone?
It's what happens when you create a propaganda channel devoted to tickling the balls of the right wing. All the actual journalists will dip out and you'll be left with sycophants and people who won't get a media job anywhere reputable.
It's not going anywhere. It is being backed by billionaires, and whilst it's fun to mock them now, with the support and the desire to radicalise more people daily, like fox, it will be around a very long time. No one starts a channel like this unless it's with radicalising long term goals.

No one starts a channel like this unless it's with radicalising long term goals. If this channel is here to radicalise people like you say. Then isn't it alao possible that a different political leaning media like ITV, BBC, Channel 4, Sky News, CNN also have the capabilities to radicalise people? Or is it different when they agree with you?

Absolutely none of those channels present a socialist agenda, and anytime a socialist appears on the scene, they work just as hard as rw media to smear them into oblivion. See Sanders in the US, or Corbyn here.
They are about the status quo - the BBC is scared to even criticise Johnson for anything, CNN was the anti trump channel but had his former campaign staff on pretty much every show they made. It's all about maintaining their access and privilege.

See Sanders in the US, or Corbyn here. But a socialist agenda is exactly what the people of the United Kingdom rejected in a big way not so long back. So who'd want a socialist agenda on their TV's anyway? Not much of a market for it.

They didn't actually, because the policies of the democratic socialist agenda are still some of the most popular when the GBP is polled. BBC imposing Corbyn pictures with St. Basils in red square behind him, or calling free broadband -broadband communism.

Andrew Neil has resigned as chairman and lead presenter of GB News, just three months after helping to launch the channel.
"It's official: I have resigned as Chairman and Lead Presenter of GB News," he posted on Twitter on Monday.
Neil, 72, was on air for less than two weeks before announcing he was taking a break.
The former BBC political presenter will continue to contribute to GB News as a regular guest commentator.
In a statement, he said: "I am sorry to go but I have concluded it's time to reduce my commitments on a number of fronts.
"Over the summer I've had time to reflect on my extensive portfolio of interests and decided it was time to cut back."
He added: "I wish GB News well in continuing to fulfil its founding promise and mission to reach audiences currently underserved by existing news broadcasters."
A statement from GB News said: "Andrew is without doubt one of the finest journalists and interviewers in this country.

Former BBC presenter Andrew Neil says he left GB News over the direction the channel was taking, saying he became a "minority of one" within management.
The journalist told BBC Question Time he would let people "make up their own minds" over whether his exit was because the channel was too right wing.
He also described the launch of the new station as not a "startling success".
Neil resigned on Monday as lead presenter and chairman just three months after the channel went to air.
In a statement at the time, he said he had decided to "reduce [his] commitments on a number of fronts" - something he repeated on BBC One - and wished it well for the future.
In response, GB News said: "Andrew is without doubt one of the finest journalists and interviewers in this country.
"GB News thanks him for his 12 months of leadership, wisdom and advice, and we wish him well."

The TV channel launched in June, promising to "change the face of news and debate in the UK".
It recruited a number of big names alongside Neil, including former BBC News presenter Simon McCoy, ITV veteran Alastair Stewart and ex-Sun journalist Dan Wootton.
But it has been troubled by low viewing figures and resignations from other staff members, including the former advisor to Boris Johnson and ex-BBC correspondent Guto Harri.
Neil, 72, was on air for less than two weeks before announcing he was taking a break. amid reports that relations between him and chief executive Angelos Frangopoulos had broken down over the direction of the company.

In his first appearance since leaving the channel, Neil was asked by a Question Time audience member whether the recent resignations would lead GB News to become "a new British Fox News" - the US news channel popular with right-wing viewers.
The journalist said he had "always made it clear it wouldn't be a British Fox News", claiming the US channel "deals in untruths, it deals in conspiracy theories, and it deals in fake news".
He added: "That is not my kind of journalism and I would never have set out to do that."
But pressed on whether the comparison was why he left, Neil said: "I will let you draw your own conclusions as to why I am here tonight and not with GB News."
He added: "In the run-up to the launch, through the launch and in the aftermath of the launch and I think most of you who know anything about it will know you couldn't file the launch under startling success, more and more differences emerged between myself and the other senior managers and the board of GB News.
"And rather than these differences narrowing, they got wider and wider and I felt it was best that if that's the route they wanted to take then that's up to them, it's their money."
'Good luck to them'
Pushed again by presenter Fiona Bruce on whether the channel had gone "too far to the right", Neil said: "People should make up their own minds on that.
"What I have told you is the differences were such, the direction they were going in was not the direction that I had outlined, it was not the direction that I had envisaged for the channel and I was in the minority of one.
"So it is doing what it is doing and it is up to them, good luck to them if that is what they want to do, but it wasn't going to be with me."
BBC
yeah, it's much to right wing for his taste, and on top of that, it's amateurish drivel

Indeed...
Pushed again by presenter Fiona Bruce on whether the channel had gone "too far to the right", Neil said: "People should make up their own minds on that."
That's a yes, then. Too far right, too reactionary, not real journalism.
In the run-up to the launch, through the launch and in the aftermath of the launch and I think most of you who know anything about it will know you couldn't file the launch under startling success
"...and the other reason is that it's a pile of crap."
All in all pretty damning let's face it.

By the way, I don't think the new Murdoch/Morgan channel will do all that much better. These people need to realise that it's 2021 and broadcast television is dying. The mainstream channels are hanging onto viewers by their fingernails, no one is going to bother with a "new channel".

What a farce of a 'news' channel.
It is not
New On the Money
at lunch Time
Great Long debates.
They have debates on lots of different topics. It's an interesting and new way of presenting news in more depth.
How's it doing in the viewer ratings compared to the BBC ITV, Channel 4 and Sky news, Arista?

We love gaslighting
You've made snide digs in my direction for ages, starting out of nowhere, and I just let most of them go. I've never slagged you off or anything, but you go out of your way to try and provoke me. It's just weird. So what's that you have to say about gaslighting?
