[Elsewhere, the Cabinet Office minister described
Margaret Thatcher's policies as a 'new empire' where
'the happy South stamps over the cruel,
dirty, toothless face of the Northerner'.]

Not interested?
The non-descriptive thread title and a link presented without comment isn't particularly interesting, if I hadn't seen people talking about it I'd assume he was talking there in the capacity as a (former/) minister.

It's just, sadly, completely unsurprising. This is only what one of them was caught saying on tape.

Yes, a racist joke. I don't think that's much of a defense arista.

Of Course
but in the Late 1980's it was common

Most of it is like listening to a stand up routine or something you would hear on have I got news for you
The fact that people were laughing means it was seen as a series of jokes

The laughter is all men and given that it was Cambridge in the late 80's/early90's, you can be pretty sure it was a room full of white blokes. Not the best measure of whether or not the racist and sexist jokes being told would be "seen as jokes" by everyone else.

Speculation as to who was there!, and it was over 20 years ago maybe he has read a lot of books like you and changed his views on things.
But if people want to get all worked up over something from 20 years ago that didn’t personally involve them then that’s up to them.
