Why is it called half term?

It's like 2 months on from the summer holidays, making it nearer a quarter of the yearly term than it is half way through.

There are 3 terms of roughly 3 months each in a school year,
Summer - Christmas,
Christmas - Easter,
Easter - Summer.

So the October break is roughly half way through the Summer to Christmas term.
