'Adapt or die' warning from UK watchdog

In its most shocking report so far, the Environment Agency says the UK is not ready for the impacts of climate change.

It says hundreds of people could die in a flooding event at some point, as they did this year in Germany.

"That will happen in this country sooner or later", unless the UK becomes more resilient to increasingly violent weather, the agency concludes.

Emma Howard Boyd the EA's chair, said: "It is adapt or die".

The apocalyptic tone is deliberately intended to startle governments, companies and communities into preparing for global warming effects such as higher sea levels and more extremes of rainfall and drought.

The new report assesses the UK's readiness to cope with the many different risks of climate change.

In its response, the environment department, Defra, said it was taking key measures to protect the UK from the effects of global warming.

2050 is ridiculous. Most of the current MPs won't even be alive by then, let alone still in parliament :joker:

The UK has been building entire villages on historic flood plains for centuries - it’s nice and flat, after all - and all I can say is… I’m rather glad that I don’t live in one. It’s not an “if they flood” at this point, it’s “when”, unless there is an absolutely gargantuan investment in flood defense research and engineering at some point soon.

Half of these estates and villages don’t even have adequate drainage for heavy rainfall, let alone defences against a river or estuary flooding.

It's more than flooding which will kill us, I'm talking general environmental issues.

Until the rest of the world comes on board, there really isnt much else we can do cause it will weaken us against the countries who dont. That is one thing that cant happen if the end of the world is nigh, unfortunately.:nono:

My town used to be by the sea, now the nearest coast is 12 miles away. Thats 12 miles of houses that are just going to be swept away at some point when the sea inevitably comes back with a bit of climate change. It's crazy. No amount of flood defence is going to stop that

The "targets" set are not enough.

Moreover, while the likes of China are bigger global polluters than the UK, the effects of pollution can be localised. I'm sure you can tell the difference between air quality in cities and the countryside? Well, crappy conditions like in cities can beget worse weather in those places.

Maybe ,just maybe we are killing ourselves, not fair to blame others when we, every individual can take some of the blame,we are killing the planet ourselves,there are ways we can help but just don't as it doesn't suit us, we ALL need to take some responsibility instead of laying the blame elsewhere,that's just a cop out

Yes and no, we can do something in terms of boycotting companies and corporations that won't comply, but 90+% of the problem is caused by industry and there's nothing we can directly do about that at all.

I'm disheartened every time I go to a supermarket. So much packaging and so much waste. My Mum was saying in London when I was little we had a dairy that delivered milk, in bottles, by electric vehicle. No we all buy plastic bottles in supermarkets. Hardly anyone seems to be bothered... And I'm really tired of hearing that Christmas may be cancelled. It wasn't cancelled in 1940. it wasn't cancelled when people were being rationed in the 50s, or when there was a three day week and power cuts in the 70s... Maybe we can all have a Christmas that's simpler with less plastic crap to throw away.

I don't knowingly buy anything from China. I know there may be some Chinese components in other things I buy... but I boycotted Chinese goods years ago and I wrote to the Chinese Embassy telling them so. Sadly, they produce cheap stuff and that's all some people are interested in.

Mother nature/the weather does not pick its targets. So britain could be zero carbon, but it would be pointless and would not protect us from flooding if no other nations did the same.:shrug:

There was a woman from Octopus energy on the news last week saying in a year or two these pumps will cost the same as a gas boiler, what I want to know is do they actually work!

i was talking to my central heating guy about it. They are supposedly very good and would match what your typical boiler can do.

I think labour are missing the point really. What use is an interest free loan when the price is still 20k. It still means you have to pay 20k rather than 2k or whatever :laugh:
