About 100 people have protested outside
Netflix's headquarters over the airing
of a comedy special by Dave Chappelle,
which they say was transphobic.
Netflix staff and transgender activists staged
the walkout outside the
streaming giant's Los Angeles offices.
Demonstrators called on Netflix to fund more trans
and non-binary talent, and other measures
to avoid "transphobia and hate speech".
Ahead of the rally, Netflix issued a statement
in support of the activists.
A video was also released featuring several Netflix stars,
including Queer Eye's Jonathan Van Ness
and The Good Place actress Jameela Jamil,
thanking people for taking part in the demonstration.
Other LGBT celebrities, including Elliot Page and Lilly Wachowski,
voiced their support on social media.
Netflix has been mired in controversy over The Closer,
in which stand-up comedy star Chappelle says
"gender is a fact" and that LGBT people are "too sensitive".
Chappelle has laughed off the backlash,
recently saying: "If this is what being cancelled is about, I love it."

I wonder did people actually watch his show in full? He actually told the saddest story at the end, he doesn't hate trans people. His stuff about women was way more insulting but it's comedy so.....

The TRA dogma has little (or zero) sympathy for Transpeople who aren't "doing it right". I suspect poor Daphne Dorman falls into that category.

For anyone who actually watched and understood the show, he's quite succinctly proven his point entirely. It's a strange watch really... it's certainly not comedy.

Exactly. Only "right thinking" transpeople matter it seems. I liked how he said Daphne was his people though a comedian, not theirs

Yeah it is a strange watch

I also find it HIGHLY amusing that the same activists are not up in arms about the latest season of Sex Education. Apparently it went over their heads that it takes aim at the underlying philosophy in exactly the same way as the Chapelle special. Needs to be on-the-nose to generate the outrage response, I guess.

The people "protesting" just want to feel important
Bunch of racists trying to cancel someone just because they black.

It's a good watch and has always been very LGBT positive. It still is fundamentally but the entire last season was essentially a critique of polar extremes, and the destruction and damage that can ultimately come from being too stubborn/dogmatic. The unintended consequences etc.
I don't think it was even hugely subtle but Twitter didn't have a major kick-off and threaten to cancel Netflix, so I can only assume it slipped under the radar.

I think that some people only like offensive jokes until it's something they care about though sadly Niamh.
To me personally I'm up for most jokes as long as the timing is good.

Idiots.
I've not seen his latest in full, but I'm gonna guess he also made fun of the white people, women, celebrity...
The part about them making up words to win arguments is genius :joker:

My kids are always telling me to watch it, I will get round to it at some point definitely, if only to see what you mean here
***my kids are 17 & 21 before I get blasted for letting children watch it :p

Well that's it exactly.
That reminds me of when Frankie Boyle FRANKIE BOYLE blasted Ricky Gervais for telling a joke about Caitlyn Jenner (which wasn't even really about her being trans it was more about gender stereotypes) I mean Frankie "I joke about disabled children" Boyle mmmhhhmmm
Whatever happened to just changing the channel if you don't think someone is funny or too offensive?

Frankie Boyle really should keep his mouth shut imo, as you've said he is being an unbelievable hypocrite.
And I agree about just changing the channel if you don't like what you're seeing.

I didn't know this , just shows Frankie Boyle is such a hypocrite . That disgusting 'joke' he made about Harvey wasn't even funny .

Exactly, I mean he joked about a specific disabled child because his mother is in the public eye and he's trying to make out that Caitlyn Jenner, a very privileged individual is more vulnerable? Absolutely bizarre

It's just so hypocritical I can't fathom it, how he has the audacity to criticise anyone else for offensive jokes

It would be one thing if he'd been very young starting out but he was well into his 30's before he arrived on the scene at all. Not that people's thoughts and opinions can't change, but his criticisms should surely only ever come with a caveat of "having learned over time" and acknowledging his own past comments.

Yeah that's it, has he ever even apologised for his own offensive (highly offensive) jokes before sitting on his moral highground of lies? :fist:

A bunch of white non-creatives with cushty office jobs are acting like they're more important to Netflix than one of the most popular comedians :joker:
netflix doesn't have a problem recruiting, so walking out is only hurting themselves. Surely if it were a genuine issue, you would want to address it from a position of strength within the organisation, rather than walking out where your voice means sod all

is it my imagination but did they describe themselves firstly as non binary...fine...but then in the next breath she said she was a trans woman...going by the name of David and Eureka.... and then a few sentences on they were back to being non binary again...

Well now have seen this and what the ****? I knew many of these activists were oversensitive but come on. This is taking the piss. And I pretty much only knew it existed in the first place because of the fuss (and niamh). All that happens with these kickoffs is MORE people become curious. I am starting to wonder if these activists actually do this, specifically TO give more attention and views to whoever its claimed upset them that week. Plants if you will.
Also he is totally bang on the money with his final point. I didn't actually expect this to be that..deep, aswell as hilarious. I have never watched him before and am now watching sticks and stones :D
Vicky.

I am finding this now with sticks and stones too. This michael jackson stuff is both hilarious and 'not comedy' is the way I would describe it. This guy is fantastic and I am glad I have discovered him now.
Some people just like to protest, which is their right, it doesn't mean that the world has to take any notice of them. To me, that is the fundamental problem, they are just not worth bothering about and yet they are given artificial prominence in fb, twitter etc
For those old enough, Mary Whitehouse and her group used to complain/protest about all sorts, and everyone just laughed at her
Vicky.
23-10-2021, 11:44 AM
Yes too much attention is given to them tbf.
Giving the attention to them also gives attention to the people they complain about. Each 'omg remove it from public life' style kickoff, just seems to make whatever the offensive thing/person/whatever is more popular as many would never have even heard of them without the wailing. Or never thought about the topic til now. And so on.
Best to ignore. I say whilst talking on a thread about one such teeth gnashing protest that has infact worked the opposite way to what the protesters wanted..

I am ****ing obsessed with this guy now. Hes amazing. And his comedy is comedy without being comedy. Which sounds weird so you wont know unless you watch it tbh. Which I doubt any protesters did.

He loved that woman and invested in her and those that fight for her killed her because she didn't have the same opinion as them.
