Driving to catch the ferry in Wales one December, on the motorway with torrential rain that the wipers literally couldn’t cope with, visibility zero, it was terrifying

Great storm of 1987

The highest measured gust of 135 mph was recorded at Pointe Du Roc, Granville, France and the highest gust in the UK of 122 mph was recorded at Gorleston-on-Sea.

The week we arrived in SA.
Hailstones the size of tennis balls, they came through the hotel roof and my sister and I woke up to our beds floating like boats.
On the plus side, a couple of weeks later when we had settled into our new home, we woke up to glorious sunshine and glistening snow.
Doesn’t often snow in Africa.

What seemed to be a literal monsoon starting 10 seconds after I left for the school run. Leaving me huddled in trees outside the school gates then chanelling Ussain Bolt on my rush to get the wall that's slightly sheltered to lean upon to collect my children. Luckily it stopped before they came out. Then I felt a little resentful in all honesty while being happy they didnt also end up drowned rats, and wondered what I had done wrong to the gods of weather.
