With a "good hiding" they end up a pile of rubble and breeding ground for jihadists, just like Iraq. We've surely learned that lesson. I don't know what the answer is but I know it isn't another war in the Middle East.

iran was "civilised" during the time of the shah in as far as it could be, but it wasn't it's natural state of equilibrium. What we see now is just they way the people in that region are. Nothing is going to change that no matter how many bombs are dropped on them

Yeah my view is that those regions should be effectively abandoned.
Foreign aid is wasted if it's going to the oppressors, unless it goes to NGOs or Western charities it should be stopped.
