2.5 miles as the crow flies.
From our house to where the maternity home used to be.
500 miles, directly south on the map to the millimetre.

About 90miles…
I was born in Hull maternity hospital. It's no longer there, they've built a new one in more recent times but it was about a fifteen minute walk from where I live now.
About 15 miles
As a kid I always had this idea that you grow up and move away from your hometown but I remember some stat that something like 75% of people still live within twenty miles of where they grew up

I moved over 100 miles from where I grew up as soon as I left home, then my next longish term home (3 years) was over 200 miles away. We eventually “settled” (for the last 9 years now) about 80 miles from where I grew up… so closer, but still a good 2h drive.
There’s no reason for me to return there any more though, my mum still lived there but she’s been dead nearly 7 years now, none of my old friends that I’m still in contact with live there any more, and my dad moved back to his ancestral homeland (Glasgow) the second him and my mum separated when I was 18 . He’s a weegie through and through and never wanted to leave, he only ever moved away because my mum didn’t want to live in a city. And my sister moved off for an Island life.
So no personal ties to my hometown at all these days.
Can’t say I’m disappointed, all the people I knew at school who stayed local are pickling away in the Masonic lodge now. My home town was bright Orange, LT would have loved it.
I'd hate to live anywhere but the area I've always known. All my mates are mates that grew up together since being kids.
I suppose when you live in Hull, there's nowhere better to go. Great city, great people.

It's a different continent; South Africa, which is 6.1k miles away.

I had a house in between this one and the house I was born in .. that was nearly two miles away ...
It’s a strange phenomenon round here .. my generation seem to be home birds .. most of the lads and girls of the late 1950’s seem to have stayed in the town whilst most of our generation’s children have decided to move away ...
Guessing it’s a generational thing ?
