https://racer.com/2022/02/19/exclusive-mario-andretti-on-andretti-f1-game-plan/

With one tweet on Friday, Mario Andretti hyped up motorsport fans around the world by announcing his son Michael is attempting to enter his own Formula 1 team in 2024 after failing to purchase Sauber.

Here, Mario speaks exclusively to RACER about the plans and how they’re taking shape.

Q: It’s really big exciting news that has got a lot of people talking – how exciting is it to know of all the plans because you must be involved pretty heavily?

“That’s exactly right. What’s interesting, what’s kept me motivated in the business all my life is when I’m excited about something to share it with fans of the sport and then see their reaction. It’s been amazing. The feedback that we’ve received and I’ve received has been 99.9% positive and that’s what we live for in so many ways. That’s what’s so gratifying and that’s why you embark on a lot of these ventures that obviously are very ambitious — no question — but that’s what it’s all about. That’s what keeps you going.

“I’m very proud of what Michael is doing and his goals. I certainly endorse what he’s doing and I’m there to help whichever way I can without having a job! That’s the perfect scenario!

“I said, ‘You’re so far along and you’ve done so much work since the attempt to purchase a present team failed.’ He’s not giving up on the idea, period. He started working immediately on the Plan B, if you will, that now becomes Plan A, to just start his own team. He has a couple of individuals behind him that are here for the duration and are solid, and everyone is feeling the same way, feeling very positive about embarking on something like this.

“It is a huge situation here to get into but we live this sport. That’s all we do, that’s all we know and it’s not that we’re people who just have the financial means and say, ‘Let’s give it a try.’ No, this is our life. This is all we do. We breathe what we do.

“So we’re here for the duration and for Michael, you could see he’s been very ambitious as a team owner by participating in different disciplines all over the world if you think about it. Formula E, Extreme E, Supercars in Australia… He likes to put himself next to some good partners as well.

“But the Formula 1 goal here is the ultimate goal for him as well, no question about it, and he’s young enough to be there for a long, long time. And from my standpoint to see all of this happening is really what keeps me going, to be honest with you.”

Q: It would be incredible to see it come off, especially such a positive reaction. There was already a positive one when he was trying to buy Sauber, so was the idea to create his own team a response to that or was he working on both plans at the same time?

“To be honest with you all along he had this idea of, ‘Well, if this doesn’t work we might have to start our own team.’ So he started working, he started talking about possible connections — that’s how he pretty much lined himself up with an engine supplier and some of the aspects where, if you don’t have anything like that at least promised then what’s the point? Also, he has some very, very interesting and powerful individuals ready to come onboard as soon as this thing becomes official, with how to guide him and how to be involved in a start-up operation.

“I cannot mention these individuals now until it’s official, but he’s done his homework to the point where I said, ‘You know, Michael, I’m going to say something about it,’ and he said, ‘OK, just don’t tell them everything!’ I just can’t sit back and not share some of this with the fans.”

Q: And you making it public must also help in terms of more potential partners or people who want to be involved in the project coming to you now that more people know about it?

“That’s my point exactly. We all know the importance of that — to arm yourself with the best talent possible for the particular job and that’s the secret of everything. That’s how you reach out — you try to create enough excitement that it could be interesting for a lot of talents to join something like this and be part of it.

“All of it works. I’ve already been reaching out to really key people — I have a lot of friends in the business and that’s the beauty of it. Motorsports is one big family; we’re all part of it and we’re the ones who are here to stay, that’s the important thing, because this is all we do.”

How far down the line are you with the FIA? Have you just registered interest that you want an entry or have you had to do anything specific so far?

“It’s in there, it’s absolutely with the key people. All of this has been going on and at the moment I think it’s a matter of them getting approval from the teams and all of that what has to happen. There’s several steps that they have to take which is part of it. I’ve been in touch with Bernie (Ecclestone, former F1 chairman) — he and I have been speaking and I’ve been getting a lot of guidance as well. He’s the one who implemented a lot of these rules.

“We’re on it. We’re on it in all those aspects — we’re not going in here blindly. Anything that has been asked of us — guarantees and whatever — we comply. So if there’s anything more they need from us, we’re ready to respond. That’s the way it is, that’s where we are.”

You mentioned the fees — at the moment it’s $200 million to buy an entry into the sport. I know F1 mentioned that might be waived with agreement, but if it isn’t, is Michael in a position to pay?

“Yes, yes. Like I say, we’re going into this thing with our eyes wide open and we know some of the prerequisites. I don’t think Michael is asking for any special favors — we need to comply with whatever we need to comply to and go on. It’s as simple and as complicated as that, but we know what we are getting into.”

It has been reported that the chassis could be made in Indianapolis but the team will run out of the UK, is that accurate?

“Yeah absolutely. I don’t want that to be confused — we get some remarks even on Twitter: ‘Oh yeah, you can’t operate out of the U.S.’ — we’re not going to operate out of the U.S. Michael’s whole plan is to expand all operations, expand even the facility in Indianapolis where we’re going to have much more capability to be able to manufacture aspects of it, not relying on other vendors. But the base operation, engineering, everything is going to be out of the UK. That’s solid, that’s the way it’s going to be. We don’t need to confuse all that. A lot of people said, ‘You’re a dreamer to operate out of the U.S.’ No, that’s not the intent. We’re not stupid about these things.”

Q: The Andretti Extreme E team is based in Dorset, UK…

“Yeah they are, but this would be a totally different scale. This would be a whole new-scale operation.”

In terms of drivers, Colton Herta was lined up if the Sauber takeover happened, is it still an ambition to take some of the young American talents that you guys help nurture across to F1?

“Absolutely. Michael is a great believer of that, cultivating talent. He’s done that in the Indy series, bringing them through Indy Lights and all of those farm programs. That’s another thing — you don’t want to put the cart before the horse but he says once we’re in there in the series, he says we’re going to field a Formula 2 and Formula 3 team. This is long, long, long-term planning. And how many Formula 1 teams do that? Not too many. But they will and that’s what Michael has done. How many teams in IndyCar are doing that? Not too many, but Michael is doing it. That’s his way of going about it, but he’s all-in in this sport. He has big plans for the future, for as long as he is able to participate in this sport. He’s young enough so I think it’s individuals like Michael who can provide stability in this sport, because like I say we don’t come and go. It’s all we do, it’s all we know.”

Q: Does the timing feel right because of the extra interest in F1 in the U.S. and the fact that maybe that will help get partners on board and get brands to work with you to make this a reality?

“That’s huge, exactly. That plays all the way around. I think it’s got to be adding some interest too as far as the fanbase with more races, two races now in the U.S. and to have another U.S. team in Formula 1…

“And then the important thing to also have — he’s going to definitely start with at least one American driver, which more than likely is going to be Colton. I’d put my money on that kid any day, I just feel that he’s something very special and it’s not just words, he’s proving it and it’s fun to watch him doing his things. Michael has been able to be part of that, cultivated him right from the beginning when he came out of Europe in Formula 4 when he drove alongside people like Lando Norris. People like that know him, so he has a great feel for these things.

“And look what he’s done so far in the IndyCar Series. Already won six races, pole positions against the best that IndyCar has got to offer, so don’t take that lightly. That’s pure talent, because everybody in IndyCar has the same equipment, basically, so the onus is a lot more on the driver. It would be lovely to see an American that really wants to be there and he’s one of them.

“Michael can provide that vehicle unless he gets an opportunity sooner, and Michael would let him go. But he’s one, and Michael will arm himself with at least one American driver, maybe two. But it’s going to be at least one, and that’s important. It’s been a long time since we had an American driver in F1.

“It all plays. With the Netflix (“Drive To Survive”) show that’s been floating around for a couple of years now, I think that has awakened a lot of the fanbase here but also cultivated some new fanbase — we’ve seen that. Look at the crowd they had at COTA for the weekend, that was really unbelievable. So that’s it, all of it is coming together I think. Formula 1 is in a good place and you want to be part of it.”

Q: I spoke to Colton after he won at Daytona and he mentioned there are still opportunities in F1 — now I know what he was on about!

“The kid is for real. I know what I’m talking about, I know when I see something. I said the same thing about Max (Verstappen) when I first saw him. I said the same thing about Sebastian Vettel when he won Monza with Toro Rosso and things like that — I’ve been around long enough to see these things and I haven’t been wrong yet!”

So 2024 is the target, can you speak about engine suppliers or partners yet?

“2024 is the target, yes. Partners is something that Michael will have to divulge when everything is official, so I think those are news that are part of his department, not mine, otherwise he would fire me I think. He knows I can’t keep too many secrets so he says, ‘OK go with it!’ He knows me better than that.”

Max Verstappen has had 29 DNFs in his F1 career so far. In which:

- 16 were caused by a mechanical failure.
- 13 were caused by a collision or mistake of his. Of those 13, 6 were found as his fault.

6/29 DNFs are his fault. It's a huge myth that he causes himself to DNF a lot.

next week british grand prix

with eurovision runner up Sam Ryder to perform the national anthem before the race

https://www.silverstone.co.uk/news/sam-ryder-set-open-2022-formula-1-british-grand-prix-silverstone

Fresh from his successful Eurovision campaign, Sam Ryder will perform the national anthem ahead of the 2022 Formula 1 Lenovo British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

The Essex singer-songwriter rose to prominence during lockdown when his TikTok videos began to attract plaudits from the likes of Alicia Keys and Sia. He went on to amass 13 million followers and 106m likes on the platform, making him the UK’s biggest artist on TikTok in 2021. Having captured the UK and Europe’s hearts with his song Space Man, Sam Ryder has become the highest-charting UK Eurovision Song Contest entry (No.2) in over 25 years. The stunning performance made him a household name, and he was subsequently invited to perform outside Buckingham Palace as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Concert.

Firmly established as a highlight of the British sporting calendar, the British Grand Prix is already sold out with a record 400,000 people set to visit for the first weekend in July. 142,000 will be in attendance on raceday with millions more watching across the globe as Sam Ryder opens proceedings at the Formula 1 Grid Ceremony.

Sam Ryder says: “From Eurovision to being invited to play the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Concert, the past few months have been a whirlwind and taught me that you can never dream too big!

“Since I was a kid I’ve always been a huge fan of Formula 1, and to combine that with music and performing at such a legendary event on the British sporting calendar is an honour.”

Following his performance of the national anthem, Sam Ryder will play the Main Stage in the Formula 1 Fanzone as part of the post-race concert. The stage will feature Formula 1 driver interviews as well as headline act Mabel supported by Alfie Templeman.

yes because of the rain

also one who took optimal advantage of that, was Nicholas Latifi first time making it to Q3  and funny bit is his teammate Albon got the updates and remained in Q1 while him in a car without updates making it to Q3

good qualifying for Norris after last race where he really struggled

bit surprising to see Sainz outqualifying Leclerc while Leclerc is supposed to be the better of the ferrari's as well

That was a fantastic race.

Perez in particular was very impressive coming from 16th place to finish 2nd.

I'm also happy to see Hamilton reach the podium, and Schumacher actually getting points.

The only negative I had with the race is a rule that the Sport has, and that's why did Verstappen & Hamilton have to give up their spots that they'd earned at the beginning just because incidents happened that had nothing to do with them? I perfectly understand why there had to be a red flag, I just don't get why when the race restarted why Verstappen & Hamilton didn't keep their places that they'd earned?

But besides that I really enjoyed it, it was probably my favourite race of the season.

because it was a standing start, and the FIA had decided they had to return to original positions apart from those who were behind those unable to continue because of the crashes, they were allowed to go one place upwards

Formula One driver Zhou Guanyu has credited his car's halo protection device for saving his life after he was involved in a horrific high-speed crash during the first lap of Sunday's British Grand Prix.

Zhou was one of several drivers involved in the turn one crash, which resulted in his Alfa Romeo flipping over and skidding across the track and onto the gravel, before smashing into the fencing.

The halo, which is made from titanium, forms protection around the cockpit and was introduced in 2018. Although it was initially met with some criticism from drivers, several drivers have since credited the halo for preventing serious injuries.

"I'm ok, all clear," Zhou tweeted later on Sunday, along with a selfie. "Halo saved me today. Thanks everyone for your kind messages!"

Zhou's car ended up wedged between the tire barrier and catch fencing, which is there to protect fans. The awkward nature of the car's placement meant it took some time to extract him.
Mercedes' George Russell, who made contact with Zhou during the collision, immediately got out of his car once it had come to a stop and ran over to check on Zhou.
The rookie, who is the first Chinese driver in F1, was eventually pictured being stretchered away by emergency medical personnel and was later given the all clear after being assessed at the medical center.
Williams driver Alex Albon was also involved in the crash and was flown to a local hospital for checks. He was later given the all clear, his team confirmed on Twitter.
The race was red flagged and suspended until Zhou's car had been removed. As the cars were returning to the pits, members of an environmental group made their way onto the track and sat down in protest, though fortunately the racing had stopped.

Okay, thanks for the explanation Nicky.

I do think it's a harsh rule personally, but I have that a lot in Football tbf so it's not that bigger deal to me.

I guess I'll have to agree to disagree with the FIA on that particular rule.

https://nltimes.nl/2022/07/11/dutch-fans-accused-sexual-harassment-racism-homophobia-austrian-grand-prix

Multiple women who attended the Formula 1 race in Austria have accused mainly Dutch fans at the race of reprehensible behavior, including sexual harassment, racism, and homophobia. The Formula 1 organization confirmed receiving complaints.

Women shared their experiences on social media after a female fan invited to the Mercedes garage space experienced severe harassment. Drunk onlookers pulled up her dress, told her she deserved no respect because she was a Hamilton fan, and catcalled her the entire way, according to Parool.

“We found out that this happened, and that’s just not okay,’ Mercedes team principal Toto Wolf said. “This has to stop. If you are a Formula 1 fan, for any team or driver, you cannot be racist, sexist, or homophobic. Then you don’t fit in Formula 1, and we don’t want you.”

His statement sparked a floodgate of women sharing their experiences on Twitter. “The behavior has been… disappointing,” one said. “My expectations were low, but holy cow. Racist, homophobic slurs, cat calling, inappropriate talking, and touching. The list goes on.”

“Genuinely had to fight off a panic attack and not cry the whole walk back to the exit because I was scared,” another woman wrote. “We’re coming back for the race, but we are never coming back to this Grand Prix ever again, and that’s a promise.”

“I’m at the circuit too, and I’ve seen horrible things. The girl that sells ice cream (that is WORKING) gets harassed by older drunk men without pause. It’s horrendous.”

“I heard all kinds of swearing but also the n-word, which triggered me extremely. I think this is unacceptable, and I”m full of shame for the Austrian GP and their so-called fans.”

A Max Verstappen fan who attended the Austrian Grand Prix last year pointed out that this is not isolated to only this year’s race. “Every time a woman or girl walked by in front of the grandstand, there would be catcalls, whistling, etc.” She even saw fathers with their children chanting “there should be a dick in that” at women walking by. “And I’m sure most meant it as a joke, but when you’re chanting this at young girls, it’s likely not a joke to them. And it’s not like it were just a few people. No, it was like 50% of the grandstand.”

According to Parool, the race at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg has become known as a Grand Prix overrun by Dutch Max Verstappen fans, primarily men. They sleep at one of the large campsites near the circuit and party in the days leading up to the GP.

In a response on Twitter, the Formula 1 organization confirmed receiving complaints. “We have been made aware of reports that some fans have been subject to completely unacceptable comments by others at the Austrian Grand Prix. We take these matters very seriously,” the organization said. “This kind of behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”

Verstappen’s team, Red Bull, also responded. “We are shocked to hear that there have been incidents of completely unacceptable behavior in the grandstands and the fan parks,” the team said on Twitter. “There is no place for it in racing or society as a whole. We value inclusion and want a safe space for fans to enjoy our sport.

https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.why-the-singapore-grand-prix-is-a-beast-like-no-other.83tTdyURJLUYBypTv6eES.html

The Singapore Grand Prix returns to the Formula 1 calendar for the first time since 2019 – and with it brings the most physical and mental challenge the drivers will face all year.

At 30 Degrees Celsius, it’s not the hottest race of the year, but it’s the humidity that provides the real challenge. On average, it can hit a very sweaty 80%. And that’s just when you’re outside.

Walk into the garages and it’s a step hotter and sweatier, the fans on stands offering brief respite when you get a waft of cool air.

Then you ramp it up again for the drivers, decked out in fireproofs and their thick racesuits, in the cockpits with the heat rising to 60 Degrees Celsius – a fraction cooler than sauna. It’s brutal.

That’s why you’ll see drivers spending plenty of time in saunas leading up to the weekend. Daniel Ricciardo was telling me he started his sauna programme two weeks before arriving in Singapore.

To up the ante, Carlos Sainz took his exercise bike in the sauna with him while on a training camp the Ferrari driver managed to squeeze in due to the absence of the Russian Grand Prix.

Another strategy is to wear several layers of clothing while doing their traditional training workouts. Ricciardo said he had up to seven layers on, with a mix of tight-fitting items and some thicker, warm garments, in a bid to try and simulate the conditions.

The drivers then must tackle a beast of a track. The 23-corner circuit is a mix of low-speed corners with very few straights to give the driver a breather. And they will have to negotiate it 61 times, which on Sunday afternoon often takes a minimum of 110 minutes based on recent history.

It's no wonder that in those conditions and at that intensity, the drivers lose up to 5kg. And while they don’t like to drink from their bottles, given how hot the liquid becomes, it is a necessity to avoid dehydration.

Quite a race, then, for drivers to return to after a three-week break – and one which could see Max Verstappen crowned champion for the second year in a row if results go his way.

To have any chance of achieving that feat, the Red Bull driver needs to win the race. If that happens, his main rival Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc needs to finish ninth or lower with Sergio Perez in the other Red Bull fourth or lower.

It’s a big ask, even if Verstappen is on a five-race winning run, because Singapore’s layout should in theory suit Ferrari and Mercedes rather than runaway leaders Red Bull. Even the Dutchman reckons it’s a long shot to get the job done here.

Red Bull may not be favourites, but they’ve shown impressive pace across a range of circuits this year. The tight and twisty Hungaroring shouldn’t have suited them and Verstappen was able to fight back from 10th to win the Grand Prix.

Mercedes are playing their cards close to their chest regarding their expectations, with George Russell saying he’ll need two or three laps to know if the car is going to be good around Singapore. If it’s the same feeling he had after that many laps in Zandvoort, his hopes will be boosted that it's going to be a good weekend.

For Ferrari, their qualifying pace this season has been so good, they are in shape to lock out the front row with the perfect job. And whereas at other tracks this season they’ve struggled to convert a pole into victory, passing here is much trickier.

A tantalising – and sweaty – prospect lies in store.

https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.fp1-hamilton-leads-verstappen-in-opening-singapore-practice.3I3gO1cNB3HGQr4hMEMOtB.html

Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in opening practice for the 2022 Singapore Grand Prix, with Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc finishing a respective second and third.

Marina Bay's glittering street circuit returns to the F1 calendar after a two-season absence, with Max Verstappen on the verge of securing his second drivers' championship – but he needs results for Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez to swing his way.

The session was red-flagged with 20 minutes remaining for Lance Stroll (P8) hitting the barriers with the left-hand side of his Aston Martin at Turn 5, before coming to a stop and jumping out in the Turn 7 run-off area.

With five minutes remaining, Lewis Hamilton fitted softs to shoot to the top with a time of 1m 43.033s, beating Verstappen’s benchmark by 0.084s. The Red Bull driver – who overshot at Turn 16 late in the session – set the early pace on mediums. Leclerc completed the top three, 0.402s off Hamilton’s time.

Sergio Perez finished fourth in the other Red Bull, 0.806s off the pace, while George Russell rounded out the top five for Mercedes – leaving Carlos Sainz sixth as he struggled with the car’s balance.

Alpine’s Esteban Ocon finished seventh as Alpine ran new floors in Singapore, with Stroll eighth on mediums having missed the chance to set a lap on soft tyres after his Turn 5 crash.

Pierre Gasly took P9 for AlphaTauri to leave Fernando Alonso rounding out the top 10 in the other Alpine. The Spaniard was confined to the garage for the final 25 minutes with a suspected gearbox oil leak.

Sebastian Vettel finished 11th for Aston Martin, ahead of McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo and Valtteri Bottas in P13 for Alfa Romeo.

Kevin Magnussen finished 14th for Haas ahead of Yuki Tsunoda in 15th for AlphaTauri.

Alex Albon, who missed the Italian Grand Prix with appendicitis and suffered complications from the resulting surgery, returned to finish 16th in FP1 for Williams. Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu used medium compounds to finish three-tenths off the Thai driver.

Mick Schumacher took 18th for Haas while Lando Norris, with a smattering of flo-vis paint on the right-side of his car as McLaren brought new sidepods and floor updates to Singapore, took 19th – with Nicholas Latifi rounding out the standings, the 20 drivers split by 4.059s.

apparently it is in the official rules, if a race is not suspended and finished out, you still get the full points rather than reduced points

https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.steiner-says-magnussen-pulled-off-perfect-lap-to-deliver-himself-and-haas-a.1OoRHSUwRRXRCERK4au0EK.html

With Kevin Magnussen’s qualifying shock on Friday, Haas ended the longest wait for pole position endured by any Formula 1 constructor – and Team Principal Guenther Steiner expressed his delight in inimitable fashion.

Magnussen emerged first to set his lap in Q3 as the rain began to fall, and with George Russell going off at Turn 5 to bring out a red flag, the Dane’s provisional pole was cemented. The 30-year-old was ecstatic, and said he wanted to give it all for a Sprint victory today – while team boss Steiner offered mighty praise for his team and driver.

“At the right time he [Magnussen] put the lap down. Just a perfect lap down,” said Steiner. “The last races were not good for him, we always had some issues, and today when it counted...

“Everybody went out there quick on the slicks because we knew rain was coming but you just can do what you can do and I think the other cars that are only 10, 15, 20 seconds behind us – and they couldn’t do what we did, so credit to him, he was given the opportunity and he took it.”

Steiner maintained that his team weren’t just fortunate to claim their first pole after 143 times of asking, and he offered a choice phrase to describe Haas’s achievement…

“This is the thing… you’re scared to dream about it, I think! It’s something, you know, we are trying hard, the whole team is trying hard since seven years, and then circumstances let us pull this one off!

“I think it was not luck; it was well deserved from the driver, from the team being on the same tyre, on the right tyres at the right time, Kevin putting the lap time when it was needed. You need to go out there, he was first out, you can say, ‘Yeah he had the advantage’.

“But the disadvantage – he had nobody to gauge with, he was on his own. He put a lap down and it stuck. Basically, when it rains soup, you need to have a spoon, and we had the spoon ready today.”

Having brought Magnussen back to the team in March after the departure of Nikita Mazepin, Steiner said the Dane and his squad deserved Friday evening's result.

“I think he deserves a lot. The whole team deserves this, and he’s part of the team, I always say the driver is just part of the team. I think we always work hard; we never give up; we keep on fighting. You will always have naysayers. But: ‘Welcome to our pole position’, to the naysayers.”

The Haas chief wasn’t about to get carried away when asked of his chances of a Sprint win, however.

“I think now you get a little bit too optimistic; 24 laps to keep everybody behind will be difficult, but I’m happy with points. We don’t need to win the race. If we win it, I’m more than happy, but it would be very unrealistic to think that. As long as we are in the points, I am happy.”
