View Full Version : Cancel Culture could Wipe Out Comedy says Maureen Lipman

[Maureen Lipman has said comedy
is in danger of being "wiped out" due
to fears over being cancelled.
She told the BBC she believes comedians
are now so worried about offending,
"a revolution" is taking place.
"It's in the balance whether we will
ever be funny again," she said.
Her comments come as more than
half of Britons say they have stopped
themselves from expressing political
and social views for fear of being judged.

A YouGov poll seen exclusively by the
BBC found 57% of those asked said
they censor themselves on issues
including immigration and trans rights,
particularly if their views are deemed
at the less politically correct end of
the spectrum.

YouGov questioned 1,677 people
in mid November to find out their
views on what's become known
as "cancel culture".

It is a term, first used in the USA,
to describe attempts to block or
"cancel" people or groups with
certain viewpoints.]

:umm2: no

they don't ''cancel'' anyone, they just cancel any inappropriate content (certain things you just cannot make jokes about)

but if that sort of content is your only content then it exposes you for being a lacklustre wannabe comedian :fan:

since any good and talented comedian has a diverse ranges of jokes material

Comedy is largely wiped out nowadays imo.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine was probably the last Show I can think of that was actually funny, god knows how stand-up Comedy is holding up.

The problem with Comedy at the moment is that people on the right and left take offence to jokes far too easily.

I remember when you used to look forward to seeing the new Only fools and horses Christmas special on Christmas day, it was an event in itself. 20+ million would tune in to watch. There's nothing comes anywhere near as close to that now. The Royle Family did bring that back to an extent for a short period but there's been nothing since.

I can’t believe that great comedy writers are no longer out there, I just think they're not given a chance if the write something funny but their face doesn't fit. It's probably because the heads of television are all box ticking middle and upper class university educated types and don't have a clue what the working classes want.

imagine certain people finding racist, sexist, homophobic/transphobic jokes even funny

:umm2:

yes everyone is allowed a freedom of speech, but jokes need to remain genuinely funny and what stand up comedy is, light-hearted entertainment in which insulting jokes have no place

and if you use your stand up comedy platform to express your serious opinions, well you're at the wrong place, because then you should join talk shows :fan:

I mean a lot of comic material is basically taking the piss out of someone or something...often a joke at someones expense or a pop at the Irish The Scottish..the English...The Welsh....or taking the piss out of womens behaviour or mens behaviour. Its been going on for years...thats the comical factor. If you cant laugh at yourself if you fall into any of the catagories then you lack a sense of humour....and if you dont like it...turn it off.

I would agree with this.

Even when you go to tune into something that's meant to be lighthearted like Sky Sports News, it instead turns into a Covid discussion for 18 hours of the day, racist abuse for about 3 hours of the day, and then finally what I am guessing everyone is tuning into the Channel for which is the Sports themselves get about 3 hours too.

I miss the 00's and early 10's where if you wanted to watch something serious you had to seek it out rather than it being forced down my throat like nowadays does.

Tbf if you banned a lot of those jokes then Family Guy wouldn't be half the programme that it was imo.

And btw Seth MacFarlane is far from a racist, he uses his Shows to highlight the flaws with viewpoints like racism & homophobia, he just presents these issues in a humorous way to stop the audience from feeling preached at.

In the mid-aughts to early teens "we" seemed to collectively understand that taking the piss out of each other is completely harmless, and that in most cases those telling the jokes don't really think the things they're saying.

Comedy has completely lost its teeth in recent years.

That said, my favourite currently running comedy is Not Going Out, and that's just quickfire silly jokes and wordplay. The only thing remotely "problematic" about it is that the cast is all white, but even that's because they're all an extended family.

Exactly! And if you needed to resort to racism, homophobia and sexism to call yourself a comedian, then you were never funny in the first place. So at that point, it's one less cringe comedian out there. The good ones know how to adapt.

I think when it comes to Comedies touching prejudice as a topic is that it is all about the intent.

Like another example that I'd give is Eric Cartman in South Park, a hugely popular character for the Show who is every kind of ist or ism known to mankind, but it's clear that the Show's intent is to laugh at Cartman than with Cartman because the Show understands that his views are horrific in general, but imo is a fun character to watch.

One of the reasons why I find not just Comedy but TV in general so dull nowadays is because characters are too sanitised in what they can and can't do in terms of content.

I'm going off on a tangent here I know, but I watched Angel I think last year now, and some of the things that get said and actually happen in that programme would never get made today, but in some areas it would make the Show far less interesting to me at least.

Personally speaking if a Show came out tomorrow attacking white people in a serious manner I'd just not watch the programme, I don't understand this culture of wanting to censor everything.
