A man held overnight at Tullamore Garda Station in connection with the investigation into the suspected murder of teacher Ashling Murphy yesterday will face further questioning this morning.
The man, a Romanian national who has been living in the Co Offaly town for a number of years, was arrested yesterday afternoon following the fatal assault of the 23-year-old local primary schoolteacher.
Ms Murphy taught first class at a local primary school and was well known in traditional music circles.
The man was arrested after two women out walking reportedly came upon Ms Murphy being attacked around 4pm on the banks of the Grand Canal in Tullamore, Co Offaly.
Gardaí confirmed at 7.40pm yesterday evening that Ms Murphy had died and launched a murder investigation.
Gardaí quickly closed off the area on the banks of the Grand Canal, between the town centre and Boland's Lock.
Ms Murphy's body was removed from the scene at about 9pm.
The crime scene at a location known as Boland's Lock remains preserved and the State Pathologist has been contacted to carry out a post mortem.
The Office of the State Pathologist and the Garda Technical Bureau have also been notified.

An incident room has been established at Tullamore Garda Station under a Senior Investigating Officer and a family liaison officer has been appointed and is liaising with the family of the deceased.
The violent incident, which took place on the greenway regularly used by walkers and runners, has shocked people in the town and beyond.
The stretch of the canal where the attack occurred is called Fiona's Way in memory of Fiona Pender, a woman who grew up nearby and has been missing since 1996 when she disappeared.
Gardaí are appealing for any person with any information on this fatal assault to come forward. In particular, Gardaí are appealing to any persons that were in the Cappincur/canal walk area of Tullamore before 4pm on Wednesday to contact them.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Tullamore Garda Station on 057 932 7600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

Yeah, there really is. The fact that it was 4pm in the day as well is really terrifying. And whoever did it is still out there, I thought yesterday at least they got the guy but looks like that isn't the case

There were 695 victims of homicide in the year ending March 2020, 47 more (7%) than the previous year; this figure includes the Grays lorry incident with 39 homicide victims – if this incident is excluded, homicide showed a 1% increase overall.
The homicide rate was 11.7 per million population, with the rate for males (17 per million population) almost three times that for females (6 per million population); this is a higher difference than previous years because of a 20% increase in the number of male victims, from 422 to 506, and a 16% decrease in the number of female victims, from 225 to 188.
The homicide rate over the three-year period to year ending March 2020 was 49.5 per million population for the Black ethnic group, approximately five times higher than for the White ethnic group (9.4 per million population).
Just under two-thirds (443 or 64%) of all homicide victims in the year ending March 2020 were from the White ethnic group. The number of Black victims in the last year, at 105, was the highest seen since the year ending March 2002 (107 victims).
There were 142 homicide victims aged 16- to 24-years-old, an increase of 32 on the previous year and a return to the relatively high levels seen in the year ending March 2018 (147).

I think a lot of the murders in Ireland (and probably similar for the UK) will be in Dublin(and in cities) and gang related. It's these unprovoked type of ones that are really scary though, when a person is just out exercising and minding their own business in the middle of the day

I wonder why they jumped on that guy so quickly, they need to be looking at maybe an ex boyfriend, she used this route regularly, ironically it is called Fiona's way in memory of Fiona Pender who went missing and was never found
RIP Ashling

Breaking: Man arrested in Ashling Murphy murder probe

Gardaí have arrested a man in connection with the murder of Ashling Murphy.
The arrest took place as the man was discharged from hospital, where he had been treated for significant and suspicious injuries.
He is now in garda custody under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 and is being questioned on suspicion of the murder of the 23-year-old teacher.
He can be held for up to 24 hours, excluding sleep breaks.
A Garda statement said: “Gardaí investigating the fatal assault on Ashling Murphy that occurred at approximately 4pm on Wednesday, 12th January, 2022, along the canal bank at Cappincur, Tullamore, County Offaly have arrested a male in his 30s on suspicion of murder.
“The male is now detained in Tullamore Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.”
Ms Murphy was murdered as she went for a jog along the banks of the Grand Canal in Tullamore.
Gardaí have been monitoring the suspect’s status at a Dublin hospital after he presented himself last Thursday with multiple wounds.
It is understood gardaí would have preferred to carry out the arrest on another day and not to do so on the day of Ms Murphy’s funeral.
But given his injuries had been treated and had been deemed fit to be discharged, gardaí felt they had no option but to arrest him.
Garda sources said they have a “huge amount” of evidence to put to the man, who is aged in his 30s and has a partner and a number of children.
The evidence includes DNA evidence, fingerprint evidence, CCTV images, eye witness accounts and other technical evidence.
Sources said they will need the time allowed under the act, unless anything the suspect says changes that.
Gardaí said they’ve had a “strong response” from the public to the various appeals for information they've sent out.
This includes a good response to the appeal on Monday for information about sightings of a man dressed in a black tracksuit.
Examinations will take place to determine the nature of the wounds suffered by the suspect and what could have caused them.
It is understood gardaí have already secured samples of his DNA from the hospital, on foot of a court warrant.
They are also thought to have possession of clothing and medical material linked to him.
At the moment, gardaí have nothing to suggest any connection between the man and Ms Murphy.
Gardaí are liaising with foreign police forces in a bid to gather any records in relation to the man.
It is the second arrest in the investigation, but the first man has been eliminated from garda inquiries and is not a suspect.

No it isn't, I think the confusion with the first man arrested and this new man is they fit a similar description (there were witnesses to the attack) Gardaí have always been clear that they don't believe Ashling knew her attacker

They've taken a DNA sample from him and they have samples they took from under Ashlings finger nails from when she was trying to fight him off so I'd imagine if they match it's going to be rock solid evidence

Either way though really horrible especially in broad daylight, I've noticed though whether it's day or night these attackers will look for an opportunity.

I'm just guessing here but I think that man they arrested may have been his relative, the one who brought him to the hospital, so I guess he must have known or at least suspected that his relative was guilty of the murder and was trying to cover for him?

I read on rte.ie they weren’t related, also that it was likely the attacker was picked up in a car after he fled the scene...presumably by this guy
Niamh.
19-01-2022, 04:37 PM
The rumour is that Ashling used her keys against the man trying to defend herself, she must have injured him badly enough that he felt he needed to go to the hospital so he also stabbed himself with a knife and said that his wounds were all self inflicted to try to cover the wounds she had given him, seems odd but he was in hospital being treated for the injuries 4 or 5 days I think

I assume that that's the guy who picked him up (whether he's a friend or relative?) and covered for him because they knew each other so he was protecting him
