View Full Version : Jimmy Carr laughs and jokes about mass murder in the Holocaust - ‘it was a positive’

Jimmy Carr is cancelled after his ‘outrageous’ remarks regarding the persecution of 200,000-500,000 Gypsies during the Holocaust, a mere few days after Whoopi Goldberg.
The distasteful joke appears on his Netflix special, which the company are refusing to remove.
Carr began his routine by justifying the mass murder of 200,000-500,000 Gypsies in the 30s and 40s as a ‘positive’
The outrageous comment was greeted by audience cheer and applause
A Scottish MP says he was ‘utterly speechless’, at the joke, whilst Holocaust Memorial Day Trust were ‘appalled’…
Jimmy Carr has always been quite a poor comedian and this insensitive comment has lost him my last bit of respect. This only comes just days after the Whoopi Goldberg stuff.
I watched a programme he was hosting a few months ago, where he genuinely believed minimum wage ‘was £13’. Completely out of touch, needs to get down off his high horse.

It’s not a comment you can ‘choose to like or dislike’, and it isn’t a ‘joke’ either, it was a scripted and distastefully executed sentence with no meaning or thought behind it whatsoever, for a few cheap giggles.
Justifying the deaths of half a million, on Holocaust Memorial Day, is not something you ‘can laugh along with’. Their deaths were not justified, no matter how hard you try, even if they do have a ‘bad’ reputation.
Would you be laughing along if I said, on the 15th April, that the Hillsbrough disaster was a positive, as 97 football hooligans with their bad reputations were murdered?

Personally I don't support people being censored over jokes, I never have done and never will do.
If an idiot wants to make a distasteful joke about the Hillsborough Disaster then let them, I just won't support them by watching that content.

He wouldn’t have to be censored if he hadn’t made such an insensitive comment in the first place, he needs to learn to keep his trap shut, just like when he genuinely believed minimum wage was £13, and working class comedians had to embarassingly correct him.
No one is laughing with him with this joke, the audience laughter is edited in, or they are ‘told to laugh’ look a the backlash he’s getting from it

I personally believe that if Jimmy Carr ****s up then that's on him, and it should be on him alone.
If as a society we censor everything that we don't want to hear then we can't complain when eventually the censor hammer lands on a Celebrity that we like.
Imo a backlash is fine as long as people don't try to ruin these people's careers over it.

I agree with this. I'm usually very much against the cancel culture stuff but making a 'joke' about thousands of people losing their lives is a step too far.

That's true.
[The comedian went on to say a "positive" of the Holocaust was that thousands of gypsies were murdered. The comments were greeted with applause and laughter.
Between 200,000 and 500,000 Roma and Sinti people were murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators, according to the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.
The charity's chief executive Olivia Marks-Woldman said: "We are absolutely appalled at Jimmy Carr's comment about persecution suffered by Roma and Sinti people under Nazi oppression, and horrified that gales of laughter followed his remarks.]

As Glib's said, most of that laughter was probably canned laughter.

Ms Dorries suggested the government could legislate to stop comedy people find offensive being shown on streaming platforms. "We're already looking at future legislation to bring into scope those sort of comments," she told the BBC.
Asked about a previous Tweet where she said "left-wing snowflakes are killing comedy", Ms Dorries replied: "Well, that's not comedy."

If jokes of any kind are causing problems in society, then it probably was secretly a problem in the first place sadly.
Like for example if someone is watching Family Guy and they agree with Peter Griffin's view of the world then there is no helping that person.

I don't have a problem with people joking about the Holocaust. When people are required to have what they laugh at, monitored, well... that's a slippery slope. Everyone knows what Jimmy Carr's humour is like, last night on the news they interviewed various people in the street, NONE of whom had actually seem the show. No one walked out of the show because presumably everyone who'd bought a ticket knew what to expect.
What I DO have a problem with, is the pure, unvarnished ignorance of someone who says that the Holocaust what a dispute between white groups... and actually believe that. Whoopi wasn't joking, she believed that sh*t.

Im sure Jimmy was not ignorant when he assured his audience his joke would be ok because ‘only 1000s’ of gypsies died in the Holocaust. Not half a million.

I saw this as in it shines a light on marginalised groups, some it is still shall we say 'fashionable' to mock. The travelling community are being recognised as one of these groups, so to me Jimmy has just picked a scab as it were and it make's us uncomfortable to know many still find themselves dehumanising certain groups who we see as 'not like us'.
The audience were laughing, these are not all the alt right just regular people exposing a bias that like it or not we all possess due to years of social conditioning. So he held a mirror to that, it doesn't mean we all wish harm to travellers but it is an ugly truth that until we are confronted and deal with this like it was/is with other groups then attitudes won't change.
That's the crux of it, it still happens .. don't shoot the messenger.

Toy Soldier
12-02-2022, 09:34 PM
I'd go a step further to be honest, it's not that the audience laughs because they're ignorant and think it's fine to mock the travelling community... the part that triggers the laugh is that the audience DOES know that some groups are considered "off limits" and others "not so off limits" and the immediate recognition of that incongruence is essentially the entire joke. To break the joke down and make it unfunny... it's not the community that's being mocked, nor the holocaust, it's the selectiveness and hypocrisy that we all know is very real in society. It's social commentary through satire. I haven't actually seen the show though in order to say if it's done well or not. As, to be fair, the level of skill behind a piece of satire really can be make-or-break as to whether or not it hits the mark.

If nothing is off limits then it's pretty much like the TV show Family Guy with the humour. I'm not even surprised tbh.Like I said it can be down to the skill of the delivery though. So for example, things are just as "off limits" in South Park as they are in Family Guy but the SP writers have frankly 10x the skill, nuance and ability to weave a social commentary and so South Park's satire pretty much always hits its mark these days (though wasn't as sharp in its early seasons) , where Family Guy has had its moments but for the most part is a scattershot of stuff that often misses the mark completely.
To use your other examples in this post; Gervais is a FAR more skilled satirist and social commentator than Carr. Especially with more recent stuff. In fact I reckon he could have landed this exact same joke without half the controversy and as a much clearer commentary than Carr.

I'm confused by this, if the same joke is told how could it without causing offence?
The difference is the delivery, Carr's style is deadpan that's what his fans expect. If you told it in the rambling monologue we would expect from Gervais it just wouldn't be the same joke.
But the subject and the premise is the same.

That's fair comment... Maybe we can just burn that one.

The only books that have ever been burned are anti establishment and/or ordered by the establishment. Everything else is fair game.

Nope they didn't. .. I just said it now.
It's all fun and games until the group being mocked is one you are in, then it's offensive. Unless you have achieved protected status and the joke sees them 'cancelled'.
a book appearing in pound land is the equivalent of a burning these days

That's a good point Kizzy.
And it was only later on some of us found out Jimmy Carr being Jimmy Carr was joking about alot of other risque subjects by looks ,which I'm not surprised at. Because as we know there's comedians who have a 'nothing is off limits' humour.
And Jimmy loves the controversy , so he'll do his dead pan ventriloquist dummy face or he'll laugh like a seal . That's what he's known for.

Lots do, Ricky Gervais is shocking in his live shows, Frank Boyle, Stewart Lee, they are known for being Unfiltered.
Are we really so upset about this jibe at travellers, Why..has anyone actually stopped and asked why this is the news story of the week? I see this as a welcome diversion by the media to avoid other issues.
Not saying it shouldn't be spoken about but the whole spin smacks of a diversion tactic.

Yeah Frankie Boyle is terrible,I've never liked his humour.
His 'joke' about Katie Price's Son Harvey, was grotesque and not funny. You'd think joking about a disabled child would be off limits but not for him. And he never got cancelled , he's still popular than ever.

Do you know why?... Because he is Katie Prices son, she is held up for ridicule because it's acceptable to mock her.
In the same way as travellers are, she is seen as in some way 'less than'.

I do agree though that was one of the worst I've heard simply because he wasn't joking about a group or an adult who put themselves in the spotlight but an individual disabled child, that could be considered bullying imo

Yeah that's pretty messed up that Harvey got picked on just because he's Katie Price's Son. The thing is if Frankie Boyle had a brain he could have come up with something witty ,about Katie herself instead of dragging an innocent disabled child into it who can't defend himself.
As for the travelling community, I agree it seems they've always been made fun of or seen in a bad light. And those C4 big fat gypsy wedding programmes don't help matters.
Ikr he actually had the nerve to call Gervais' joke "going too far" . what a bliddy delusional hypocrite Boyle is seriously  :joker: he's an idiot.
