As a self employed individual, should I be allowed some leeway to pick and chose?

Like a tax card, sort of the same as a BP or Tesco card. One where every swipe the payment for the tax goes to whatever I've set up on that card.

Really what you're advocating for is a reduction of the state, i.e. you just pay far LESS in taxes and then can choose to give that money to charitable causes (such as housing).

I've chatted with people who are supportive of this model before. Lot of 'em are religious and would prefer the charity route.

Of course the sad reality is that not enough people will actually give up that money voluntarily.

However if you're self employed you sort of CAN do that...

As you can give money to charity and reduce your tax bill. Which is (sort of) the same thing.

If you were really self employed you wouldnt be paying any tax, or maybe you just need a better accountant.

Some things would lose all funding if people could choose not to send their tax money toward it ... Which might be an argument for removing that from the tax burden anyway :joker:

But yeah, when it comes to taxes, I think some of the places the money goes to should be optional, i.e. if someone wants to divert their tax money from the armed forces to foreign aid. But I also think that someone else should be able to divert their tax money from foreign aid to homeless and/or veteran causes.

That would never be allowed to happen as too many would actively choose the NHS, housing, social care things like that. Who would actually in all seriousness fund war, royals and bail out banks if they had a choice?
