Local elections in the United Kingdom will be held on 5 May 2022. These will
include elections for all London borough councils, and for all local authorities in
Wales and Scotland. Most seats in England were last up for election in 2018 and
in Scotland and Wales in 2017. The elections will coincide with the 2022
Northern Ireland Assembly election.

SNP chap was just at my door with a leaflet asking if I will vote SNP and I said no. and then shut the door.

It says "only the SNP can beat the (sic) Tories"

not even the decency to call them Conservatives, low blow street talk

no thanks

it certainly would, I think people might even vote Labour even though they dont want to just to send a message

Partygate will not be forgotton by many, no matter how much they try to swerve it and their sheer lack of any help with energy bills and the hike in NI is too recent for it not to be an impact, I just hope people go out and vote these elections generally have a low turn out

Unless Labour get a replacement for Starmer…they don’t stand a chance. With what is going on in the world sadly increases in everything is unavoidable…Food and to an extent fuel at the pumps yes. The energy bills situation is 100% avoidable. Increases are inevitable but the current situation should have been nipped in the bud before it became a realistic possibility. Other countries have done so. Our government simply chose not to, and to offer scraps of compensation instead.

As far as i know, Locals are sort of treated like a "weather vane" for how the current government is doing?

The Greens and Lib dems will do well.

I know the upcoming Locals aren't for MPs, but I'm turned off both of these parties because I know both of the MP candidates personally, and for various reasons I wouldn't either as my representation in the House of Commons :joker:

As parties, I can't trust the Greens to actually be green, as (last time I looked anyway) they support biomass fuels (the felling and burning of trees) over nuclear, and the LibDems keep on whinging about the EU. Whether or not leaving was a bad idea, it's done and there's plenty more to focus on.

I'll probably just defaulty vote Labour, but it's annoying because I'd roughly and offhandly call myself "liberal", and environmental issues are my real bugbear :joker:

To be fair, in Scotland Labour are now so decimated that the only battlegrounds are SNP/Tory which is quite relevant really. A fairly effective litmus test for Scottish politics usually, even if it's just looking at the numbers where there's no actual change (i.e. are the constituencies that used to sweep the board that are edging closer to the pivot point).

I'm surprised by the LibDems having the most gains. I wonder if it's because people believe in whatever it is they're currently saying, or if it was simply a "none of the above" vote...

When it's "only" locals and not a general, I doubt 104 losses will be enough to seriously hurt BoJo? It might be one of many straws an ambitious replacement might yield, but on its own...

I mean, yes it was a disappointing evening for Labour, but I’m really not quite sure how the media have managed to twist it into a ‘win’ for the Tories, I mean, they lost Westminster and Wandsworth fgs.

I do however love the gymnastics the Labour right go through to still demonise Corbyn, if they win a seat it’s all down to Starmer, cause he’s done such good work, but if they lose one? Definitely not his fault, nope, not at all, no sir, definitely Corbyn

Yes although that was against the May government tbf and before the disaster of 2019 when Boris turned so much of the country Blue

Also tbf both the council elections of 2018 and the general election of 2019 can't really be used to judge what people think of the two main parties - May's government was such a flop that it elevated the already brief-but-present wave of apparent feasibleness the Corbyn train was gathering; and by 2019 not only had that faded, but now the election was against Johnson a loveable buffoon who comes out with amusing things and would be a right laugh down the pub ...

In Scotland, the first preference vote has now been declared for 15% of the wards in Scotland.

It looks as though the Conservatives are going to suffer perhaps an even bigger reverse north of the border than they have experienced in England.

Their share of the vote is currently down by six points, while Labour are up by two points. If this pattern continues then Labour will displace the Conservatives from second place for the first time in a Scottish election since 2016.

Among the pro-independence parties, the SNP are up by 1.5 points and the Greens are up by 2.5 points.

However it should be kept in mind that the SNP did not do particularly well in the 2017 local elections and the party seems to be suffering where the Greens are making a significant advance.

As south of the border, the Liberal Democrats are performing somewhat better than anticipated, with a two point increase in their share of the vote so far.

Eh, I'm not sure. People might not have much of an opinion about things like men in female sports when it's just an abstract; but when male people are visibly taking opportunities away from women, it's gonna "peak" people.
More women than you'd think don't like the word woman being replaced with "inclusive" terms, when referring to woman-specific healthcare etc...

because the lib dems got smashed the last time they were in a coalition, why would they risk it happening again?

I think we need a dose of reality. Before the last election, the lib dems believed they were going to win a majority, and then look what happened

Another point worth remembering, the lib dems and labour had lost a ton of council seats over the last 5 or so years. There was only really 1 direction for them to go this time and that was upward.

I don't necessarily think he should - he's better than most of the alternatives - but f the vultures force him out for basically doing a fraction of what BoJo did, then it would make Johnson's continued hanging on more tenuous?

I hate both, but Starmer has presented himself as a man of high morals and convictions, and that's never an accusation you could throw at Johnson.

It will have absolutely no impact on Johnson who should have already done the decent thing, but if Starmer ends up with a fine, then he will have absolutely no choice. Morals is the only thing KS has tried to stand on, he's abstained over the worst tory policies, and hasn't fought for anything other than wallpaper photo-ops.
