The person
just came back from Nigeria

[Initial symptoms include fever, headache,
muscle aches, backache,
swollen lymph nodes, chills
and exhaustion.
A rash can develop,
often beginning on the face,
then spreading to other parts of the body.
The rash changes and goes through
different stages before finally forming a scab,
which later falls off.]

Probably worth mentioning, given recent global events, Monkeypox has very low person-to-person transmissibility.

Monkeypox contact tracing extended to Scotland
[Public Health Scotland has confirmed it is helping
to trace contacts of a monkeypox patient
who was identified in England.
The patient had recently travelled to Nigeria,
where they were believed to have caught the virus.
A "small number of individuals" in Scotland
are now reported to be in quarantine after
being identified as contacts of the patient.
The move was said to be a
"standard and precautionary exercise".]
[And Public Health Scotland said the
risk to the wider public remained very low.]

That sounds like a load of rubbish, its closer to smallpox but you probably were vaccinated against that
Israel, Switzerland and Austria are the latest countries to confirm cases of monkeypox, bringing the total number of nations reporting outbreaks to 15.
Israel and Switzerland both said they identified one infected person who had recently travelled abroad. Israel is investigating other suspected cases.
Monkeypox does not tend to spread easily between people and the illness is usually mild.
The virus is most common in remote parts of Central and West Africa.
More than 80 cases have been confirmed in the recent outbreak in Europe, the US, Canada and Australia.

I remember at the very start of this thing it was being said that monkeypox had a fatality rate of 10% but apparently what's circulating now is some milder version
I don't think that's ever been the case, occasional outbreaks as high as 3% in Africa and I think one recorded at maybe 7%? But the sad answer there are that those were the death rates in outbreaks in areas suffering from extreme poverty/malnutrition, where any disease will unfortunately have a much higher death toll, especially for the very young/old.
The general "healthy population" death rate has always been <1% for this one.
Found one article that mentions it but yeah they make it very clear that's not representative
Monkeypox may also be less deadly than is frequently claimed. The oft-cited fatality rate of about 10 percent applies to a strain that infected people in the Congo Basin. The West African strain, which several of the current cases have been linked to, has a fatality rate closer to 1 percent—and that’s in poor, rural populations. “We haven’t seen fatalities in people who’ve had monkeypox in high-resource settings,” Rimoin said.

The World Health Organization says it is working with experts to come up with a new name for monkeypox.
It comes after more than 30 scientists wrote last week about the "urgent need for a non-discriminatory and non-stigmatising" name for the virus and the disease it causes.
Continued reference to the virus as African is both inaccurate and discriminatory, they said.
Some 1,600 cases of the disease have been recorded globally in recent weeks.
While 72 deaths have been reported in countries where monkeypox was already endemic, none have been seen in the newly affected 32 countries, such as the UK.
At the latest count, as of 12 June, there were 452 confirmed cases in England, 12 in Scotland, 2 in Northern Ireland and 4 in Wales.
The World Health Organization says it will hold an emergency meeting next week to determine whether to classify the outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern - the highest alarm the UN agency can sound.
The only other diseases this has happened for in the past are Swine flu, polio, Ebola, Zika and Covid.
World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: "The outbreak of monkeypox is unusual and concerning.
"For that reason I have decided to convene the Emergency Committee under the international health regulations next week, to assess whether this outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern."

Netherlands: Health service opening special test locations for monkeypox
Over the past weeks, the GGD health services in the large cities set up separate rooms where people can get tested for the monkeypox virus, BNR reports after speaking to several GGDs.
The GGDs in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Eindhoven all set up separate facilities with separate waiting areas. Some also offer vaccinations. The GGD in Utrecht does not have separate areas but did set up a consultation hour specifically for monkeypox.
At the end of May, the public health institute RIVM updated its monkeypox guideline, advising health services to limit contact with people who come in to get tested to prevent infection at GGD locations. The RIVM also asked medical staff and testers working with potential monkeypox patients to wear a face mask as a precaution.
So far, the RIVM has recorded 352 monkeypox infections in the Netherlands. That is still very low, but the number is increasing rapidly. According to the RIVM, testing is essential to containing the virus. “The way to prevent spread is to recognize it quickly,” Tjalling Leenstra of the RIVM said to BNR. “In this way, you can advise patients to go into isolation and advise contacts to get vaccinated.”
Many GGDs, therefore, already have plans to expand testing if necessary. The GGD in Utrecht, for example, is looking at redesigning one of its coronavirus test locations.

10 yr boy got monkeypox
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-11040533/Child-catches-Monkeypox-Boy-10-years-old-infected-disease-Netherlands.html
how do we explain this?
Youngster was taken to Emma Children's Hospital in Amsterdam with rashes
Doctors there undertook tests which revealed he had caught moinkeypox
It is not clear where he caught the disease, but testing has ruled out it being down to sexual abuse
Family-of-five said they had no close contact with other guests while on holiday in Turkey and put their own towels on chairs and loungers
A Dutch child under the age of ten has tested positive for monkeypox after a family holiday to Turkey - the first confirmed pediatric case as part of the current outbreak of the tropical virus.
The unnamed youngster was taken to Emma Children's Hospital in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in late June complaining of rashes.
Doctors counted 20 lesions over his face, ear, forearms, thighs and back, but the patient did not have a fever or swollen lymph nodes.
Within a week the virus in his body had dropped to non-detectable levels, and he made a full recovery. None of his close contacts tested positive for monkeypox.
It is not clear how he became infected, but testing has ruled out it being down to sexual abuse. The family-of-five said they had no close contact with other guests while on holiday and put their own towels on chairs and loungers.
His parents, one of his siblings and a friend — who were all considered high-risk — were vaccinated with the Jynneous jab, which is being used in America.
The report comes as the United States confirms its first two cases of the tropical virus stateside, as confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Doctors at the Dutch hospital revealed the diagnosis Thursday in the journal Eurosurveillance.
Dr Marceline van Furth, who led the investigation, said they were publicizing the case to 'raise awareness... that monkeypox can develop in children'.
They warned that children — alongside older adults and pregnant women — are more vulnerable to monkeypox, with about three percent dying form the infection.
More than 16,000 cases have been detected globally in the current outbreak, mostly among gay or bisexual men who caught the disease through sexual contact.
Experts fear the disease has likely already spilled over into other populations, but has not been detected yet because of a lack of testing.
Monkeypox does not require sexual contact to spread, and is mainly transmitted via close physical contact or scabs that get stuck on towels or bedding. In rare cases it can also be passed on through the air.
America has detected 2,500 cases in the current outbreak — the second highest tally in the world behind only Spain with 3,000. The Netherlands has spotted 700, while Turkey has detected a single case.
The Dutch monkeypox patient first realized he was unwell shortly after returning from Turkey, when he noticed two small red skin lesions on his left cheek and jaw.
His doctor initially diagnosed mild dermatomycosis — medical term for a fungal infection — and prescribed anti-fungal cream.
But when more lesions appeared the medic feared he had impetigo — a bacterial infection that causes lesions on the body — and gave him antibiotics.
When they continued to crop up over his ear, forearm, thighs and back the boy was referred to hospital with a suspected case of monkeypox — with swabs at the hospital being positive.
His parents and two siblings were then also tested for the virus, but all returned negative results.
Dutch health authorities vaccinated both parents, one sibling and a friend who were deemed to be at 'high risk' of being infected. None later developed the virus.
An investigation was launched to establish where the child caught the disease, but it was inconclusive.
There was no evidence that the child had been near a suspected or confirmed case of monkeypox before catching the disease.
The parents also said they had taken care while on holiday to use their own towels and had not had close contact with other guests, limiting the risk of transmission.
Analyses revealed the strain the boy caught was the same as the one circulating in Europe's current outbreak.
In the paper, the medics wrote: 'As no plausible source could be identified, this leaves us with an open question regarding transmission.
'In the current outbreak, the predominant route of transmission is related to sexual activity in the community of men who have sex with men.
'However, other indirect transmission routes have been described, such as respiratory transmission through droplets or contaminated materials such as bedding and towels.
'Therefore, it is possible that the child was in close contact with an infectious person or contaminated object that was not recognized as such.'
They said it typically takes about eight-and-a-half days for someone infected with monkeypox to start showing symptoms.
But suggested it was likely longer — up to 21 days — for the boy because the route of transmission was different.
He had traveled to Turkey three weeks before symptoms began to appear.
His parents said the boy had chickenpox when he was five years old.

Monkey pox is not an STD. You get it from skin to skin contact. You can get it from hugging or kissing or touching hands. Sexual activity is an easy way to get it because your skin gets the most exposure during it. Someone in the gay community got it and they congregated with other gays. Pride parades were happening all over the place around the time this skyrocketed. Heterosexuals are also getting it and they, too, will see numbers climb in time. It’s the same as chicken pox and small pox (although not as contagious as that one). It’s not a plague. It’s uncomfortable but it’s not AIDS. People need to be vaccinated, the same way they’re vaccinated for measles and chicken pox now. Monkey pox has existed for years. It isn’t the first time the US had a flare up - people got it from pet stores as animals are easily infected with it.

Monkeypox will now be known as mpox, the World Health Organization (WHO) has announced, after complaints over racist and stigmatising language linked to the virus's name.
The old term will be used alongside the new one for a year, before being phased out.
Mpox was decided on after lengthy discussions between experts, countries and the general public.
It can easily be used in English as well as other languages, the WHO said.
Human monkeypox was first identified in 1970 and named after the disease caused by the virus was discovered in captive monkeys more than a decade before.

I was thinking the same. Who even remembers that "monkey" is a racist term, apart from racists?
Makes me think of the Broadway version of the Lion King. They stopped referring to the character who's a monkey, as a monkey...

Nope, they literally won't call Rafiki a monkey, because the character is usually played by a black woman... but I bet that not a single non-racist in the audience connected a monkey being called a monkey, with a black woman being called a slur.
It's like Lord of the Rjngs, when closet racists tell on themselves by associating Orcs with black people, when they don't represent any humans, not even subtextually.

But Rafiki is a Monkey though.:conf:
Obviously the Actress playing her shouldn't be referred to as a Monkey, but the character should as it is a Monkey.
I agree with you that the people associating the character with black people are being heavily racist.
And yeah I've never understood the Orcs stuff in LOTR, their connection to black people is very loose at best.

To be fair on the Lion King one, I can't see any real reason to refer to Rafiki is anything other than a baboon, as Rafiki is a baboon, which yes is a type of monkey but everyone knows what a baboon is and it's far more descriptive. Referring to Rafiki as a monkey is sort of like referring to a person as an Ape. Like yes... technically we are indeed apes... but why wouldn't you say human?
And Lord of the Rings weeeeeell... I mean... if you actually look at when it was written there is most likely some subconscious racial subtext involved in elves and orcs, with Tolkien elves being tall/beautiful/very pale skinned and Orcs, specifically an evil and corrupted offshoot of elves, being dark-skinned.
I love LOTR for what it is but let's not pretend that it doesn't have the footprint of its' time. Tolkien wasn't racist, but the trope of "pureness" being embodied by light skin and "dark skin" being an indicator of evil in fiction, as a trope, goes back further than Tolkien... so it's not necessarily that HE chose to make them dark skinned with any racist intent - but the origins of that are somewhat rooted in race.
Tolkien was ageist too, all the trees were old, no young saplings

MPOX in the News, again
as Now a Emergencey in Africa, spreading fast by sex
[WHO declares mpox global health emergency]
[The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared
the mpox outbreak in parts of Africa a public
health emergency of international concern.
The highly contagious disease - formerly known
as monkeypox - has killed at least 450 people
during an initial outbreak in the
Democratic Republic of Congo.
It has now spread across parts of central
and east Africa, and scientists are concerned
about how fast a new variant of the disease
is spreading and its high fatality rate.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
said the potential for further spread
within Africa and beyond "is very worrying".
"A co-ordinated international response
is essential to stop this outbreak
and save lives," he said.]
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvg35w27gzno
[Mpox is transmitted through close contact,
such as sex, skin-to-skin contact and talking
or breathing close to another person.
It causes flu-like symptoms, skin lesions
and can be fatal, with four in 100 cases
leading to death.
Outbreaks can be controlled by preventing
infections with vaccines, though these are usually
only available for people at risk or those who
have been in close contact with an infected person.]

I wonder if the government are stocking up on vaccines etc.
Or will it be a case of waiting to see what happens and finding we have missed the boat.
On the other hand, we could stock up and not need them, then they will be accused of wasting the taxpayers money.
All sounds very familiar.

One of our neighbours is a nurse and she told us about a young doctor at the hospital .
He worked on the COVID specific wards when the disease was at it’s worst despite refusing to have any vaccines !!
The bosses weren’t happy and insisted that he had tests checking for antibodies before each shift and he never contracted the disease .. everyone was mystified
Some people had it without symptoms but antibodies would always show on tests
