He was retired when he came out
No he retired in 1997
October 1990, he publicly came out as gay in an interview with the tabloid press, becoming the only prominent player in professional English football yet to do so. Although he claimed that he was generally well accepted by his fellow players, he freely admitted that they would often joke maliciously about his sexual orientation, and he also became the target of constant crowd abuse because of it.

i say again, who cares
no actual football fan that is for sure. Id imagine every club in the UK has gay players and im sure Rangers do too
and i could not care less nor do i want to know
and btw i never hear any homophobia at games and i go to many
cant ever remember when i did
But so many fans hate Gays

They may make chants at football, but that's just part of being a British football fan, and being British in general, that's what us British do, it's our humour, it's in our DNA, we take the pi55 out of each other and ourselves. The large majority of People don't hate gays.

I think it's tough for anyone coming out, yes, more so in the media.
It's their problem if they hate you. You'll just hate yourself more if you hide who you truly are.
I think the support you would get would outweigh the bad.
Times need to change

A lot of gay men and women care because they would understand and empathise with what it's like.
It's such an ignorant thing to say, 'who cares'.
Living in your ivory tower
Thomas Hitzlsperger played for Aston Villa, he's gay. I can't remember it being a big deal.

People saying its not a big deal yet there is a reason why players don't come out and the blame mostly lies with the fans
Didn't the former Newcastle player, Darren Ambrose come out? I remember something about him and Will Young having some sort of relationship.
There's been many rumours over the years of gay football players, don't know if they were true or not but names like Sol Campbell, John o'shea and James McFadden were rumoured.

Fans are constant homophobes and racists when things don't go there way, anyone who does not accept this news should be giving life long bans from the game as its not the sport fir them

There's tens of thousands of gays all over the country, many of which are likely to be in the families of football fans. There's very likely to be a fair few football fans who are gay. Nobody's bothered about people's sexuality. It's time to stop playing the victim and just accept that gays are accepted and in many cases adored in this country.
