[Texas gunman, 18, shoots dead 14 elementary
schoolkids, one teacher, and seriously
injures 13 - including
his grandmother: Worst elementary school
massacre since Sandy Hook in 2012

Greg Abbott, the governor of Texas,
confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that
14 students and one teacher were killed
in the shooting at an elementary school
in Uvalde
Abbott said that the gunman was
18-year-old Salvador Roma - but the name
was later clarified as Salvador Ramos
Ramos was shot and killed during
the shooting at Robb Elementary School: he is
believed to have been killed by
law enforcement officers
Ramos shot his grandmother
before heading to the school,
and was in a shootout with border
patrol agents before barricading himself
inside the school buildings
Uvalde Memorial Hospital confirmed that
two children were brought in dead
on arrival and that they were treating many more
The district said that the city's civic center
will be used as a reunification center and
that parents will be able to pick up their
children there]

Police now have controlJust imagine if that security had have been there permanently, just like it is for pretty much every other government building.

You get too many school shootings but rarely any in other government buildings but the other government buildings are defended while the Schools (where too many of these massacres happen) are left undefended. Who's doing the maths?

Private schools are heavily defended, public schools are sitting ducks unlike Politicians who are also heavily defended.

So remove the weapons from law abiding citizens and allow the bad guys to have all the weapons they want, and they will get them.

If the teachers had been armed along with the pupils, that gunman would have been taken out sooner.

When guns are freely available and can never be taken out of circulation there is a very good argument for arming up teachers and the like. The gun problem in america can't be tackled in the same way to a country where gun owners are in the minority

He broke a bunch of existing gun laws in order to do what he did, I'm not sure even more would have prevented it, not without an overhaul of the entire system. Maybe an overhaul would be in order, but there's no stomach for it in American politics.

The Dems are no better, endorsements notwithstanding. Oh, they'll play lip service, but they'll never put their money where their mouth is.

Statistically, gun owners are way more likely to use the gun on themselves as opposed to some movie film hero taking out the baddies.

There is absolutely no reason for citizens to own guns.

Hitler took guns from the Jews which were a tiny minority of the population, and unlikely to be able to defend themselves against the German people and the government, even if they were handed out like sweets in every synagogue.

The problem when you watch too much American rw commentary, is that you just end up regurgitating their nonsense without examination.

Criminalising protest.

Attacking human rights lawyers as left wing.

Taking over control of elections and the implementation of voter ID which overwhelmingly infringes on young people/students, and minorities (non trad tory voting groups) despite the fact voter fraud is not and has never been an issue.

Legalising police criminality.

Rwanda and the falsification of actual asylum rights, so that even people on here regularly repeat lies about first safe country.

Protest by it's nature is supposed to disrupt. Labour isn't a workers party anymore, but it's false to pretend that protecting workers is the aim of the bill, when you can end up with a 10 year prison sentence, just as civil unrest is on the cards over col crisis.

It’s clumsy but the “Social Media Outrage Story Reeee!!” flying around about this one is that he decided to completely randomly tweet about George Floyd.

May 25th is the 2 year anniversary of the George Floyd incident.

I suspect he wanted to tweet about that anniversary but thought it would be disrespectful not to acknowledge the school shooting.

Unfortunately as I said this was done very clumsily and has come across as looking like the opposite. But I don’t think that was the intent. Just terrible PR advice (if he’s still taking any). His best bet would have been to have two separate tweets in close succession, and also to not assume that people already know the significance of May 25th when mentioning George Floyd, as like I said it comes across as totally random if you don’t know it marks 2 years.

He could have simply posted two separate tweets  lumping George Floyds two year anniversary into a tweet about the shooting of kids the day before is thoughtless at best, I think most people realised it was the anniversary from the tweet

also the shooting was on the 24th so they dont even share an anniversary

Well yes I did say, the best thing would have been to make it a completely standalone tweet and simply opened with “On May 25th, 2020…” etc.

There’s still have been inevitable kickback, because… well… it’s social media, however the way it’s been done looks like it’s trying to equate the two or draw some sort of comparison. I doubt that was the intent but I’m also confused about how it slipped through when (presumably?) he isn’t just throwing about tweets Trump-style - I would have thought Obama would have his tweets PR checked. If he even writes them in the first place.

Yes but the tweet was made on the 25th… I imagine that’s the whole reason the tweet ended up being this clumsy to be honest; they were worried about making the school shooting “yesterdays news” by not acknowledging it. But it was handled very messily.

the implication is that he didn't give a crap about the school shooting 1) He didnt tweet about it on the day, 2) From the additional tweets it's obvious that the floyd anniversary was his only focus.

In answer to the question, I don’t find it that weird that he could afford it. Apparently he had a job, and he lived with family so no outgoings. Could have saved that in 6 months no problem even with a crappy wage… amazing how far money goes if you don’t have mortgage/rent/bills/food to think about.

Lots of 18 year olds own their own car, for example, so it’s not a stretch that he could have saved for and bought rifles.

To be fair if he bought them illegitimately they’d have cost more, not less.

the implication is that he didn't give a crap about the school shooting 1) He didnt tweet about it on the day, 2) From the additional tweets it's obvious that the floyd anniversary was his only focus.

I don't think it was clumsy, i just don't think he cared about the shooting. Thinking back to when he was president, i dont think he gave much of a crap when those type of events happened then either

Rumours say he was unemployed and lived with his Grandma. Whether that's true or not I don't know.

Not many people can realistically fight back against an assault rifle.

I’ve been wrestling all day with why someone would target young kids like this. Not that any shooting is ever understandable but you can at least trace back the rhetoric that’s radicalised someone against a race, religion, women etc and with high school shootings it’s often a peer who has snapped after years of feeling marginalised and frustrated (alongside then usually being taken under the wing of certain people online and radicalised). But little kids? How does someone even in their own broken mind justify that as a target?

The only answer I can come up with in this case is that he simply targeted kids because he wanted it to be as awful and shocking as possible.

Personally if people are falling into radical ideology then I think it's irresponsible family members & possibly Teachers at School who are spouting dangerous stuff to these eventual shooters when they're children.

Because let's be honest if everything was okay with this person in their real world, they wouldn't have been falling into a bad crowd on the Internet.

Apparent agenda no but clear path to extremism, absolutely. "Isolated young men online making rape threats/violent revenge fantasies" is what modern extremism looks like, and is increasingly the profile of what amounts to terrorism. We had one of these in the UK just last year, near identical, although he didn't target a school.

Look at the messages he's sending and the rhetoric used. This guy has been 100% sucked into the violent, frustrated "manosphere" and radicalised by it. It's an absolutely massive problem and it's going nowhere until the world actually takes off the blinkers and realises what they're looking at. It's going to keep happening. It's not about gun laws or mental health service improvements, it's online indoctrination to a new form of extremism... full stop.

I hear over 80% of these school shootings come from people who have come from broken families. That's a concerning number. The increase in school shootings has risen dramatically since the 1990s when the divorce rate really took off to what it was before then. A lack of a father figure in the home stands out in most of these cases.

It's all part of the same thing though Alf, the people you''re describing are particularly vulnerable to being taken in by these violent/extreme online groups and ideologies. Frustrated young people from broken homes, lacking in role models, easily taken under the wing of "big bro"-type figures who will validate their feelings of anger and frustration at the world and nudge them towards channeling it in more specific ways. Nihilism. Blackpilling. Male power fantasies/violence/rape/murder.

I don't think that's massively unusual. In Scotland (since the Dunblane shooting) it became mandatory that primary schools only have one primary entrance point (with an "air lock" so anyone coming in has to be allowed in by staff) and all other doors should be inaccessible from the outside at all times.

...at my daughter's school, the fire exits were constantly propped open with chairs during summer. Anyone could have jumped the fence (only waist height) and walked right into the classrooms.

So that would say that most people can control themselves. The television and the rhetoric of TV personalities and politicians would be just as influential if not more influential than people chatting with each other online. I'm not saying it's not a problem in some cases but I don't think it's nowhere near the main problem.

Same with the gun laws, they are completely irrelevant when there are so many illegal paths to getting firearmsYou don't think it's relevant how a murderer obtained the weapons he carried out his crime with?

What if he purchased them illegaly? Wouldn't it be worth investigating who sold them to him so maybe they could stop them selling to the next murderer?

Nobody, but what's been heard so far is that he's either unemployed or he worked at Wendy's (fast food) His father is out of the picture and his mother is a junkie. It's a fair question to want to know how and where an 18 year old with that background got his weapons and ammo from and how he was able to pay for them?

Even if he worked in fast food it would take less than 6 months to save up a few thousand dollars (with no outgoings).

If he bought them illegally it was probably online and paying in crypto. Not really traceable.

It ain't rocket science. The American people need their President to help the American people. If their own President won't help them then who will?

You could pay to have 5 armed guards for a year, in every school in the country for less than the 40 million of American taxpayers money that Biden has give to Ukraine.

Biden likes guns when they're for wars, those people like wars. They just don't like guns when they're for the American citizens to defend themselves.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this was some kind of set-up, it sure gives the Dems plenty of ammo for the midterms, and as always, trusting government or mainstream media is a rookie mistake.

it doesn't need to be set up, these events happen frequently enough that they would know one would be along shortly

I just don't empathise with american gun culture, but the dems arent going to change it. They had 8 years of Clinton, 8 years of Obama and now 4 years again. If they can't change it in that time, they never will.

The upshot is that protecting kids at school costs money which means less profit for someone. So thats the end of that.

Trump was correct, inner city schools do have less problems and those authorities are overwhelmingly democrat run so he pretty much shot himself in the foot with that observation

We're not just talking about your standard 'hand gun', I'm no gun expert. But when there's lunatics carrying several assault rifles, and machine guns etc you name it .

How does these countries like America ever have a chance , unless they do something and heavily restrict.

what is the answer then ??. Well some American's DO want guns banned , but the typical gun nut American will never accept it . As they'll continue to repeat " To bear arms" even if it literally kills them :bored: .

Also by banning .....they shouldn't make it so easy for ANY Tom dick & Harry to get a gun . Like I said this isn't just your standard pistol, the weapons are insane & usually more than just a few.

you are not understanding the mentality of americans. It's a huge country, most americans don't give a crap what happens in another state, its the equivalent of a different country. Texas still views itself and wants to be separate from the rest of america so they wont give a crap what the federal government think. That comes before you even start talking about different states views on guns

That would be my guess. If I'm wrong then I won't be wrong by much. Certainly nowhere near to the over 100 million people who have the right to own a gun. So the very, very, very large majority of people are not going around just randomly shooting innocent people and are instead responsible gun owners, those are the ones I think you'd like to go after and take away their possesions for other people's crimes?
