[A man who was shot with a Taser by
police in London and had to be rescued
from the Thames has died]
[Police were called to Chelsea Bridge Road
in west London on Saturday morning
after receiving reports that a man
was armed with a screwdriver and shouting.
When officers arrived shortly after,
the Metropolitan police said they had
challenged a man on Chelsea Bridge
and discharged a stun gun but
that “did not enable the officers to safely detain him”.
The man, in his early 40s,
“subsequently entered the river”,
police said, and was rescued by the RNLI,
which took him to hospital,
where his condition was assessed as critical.]

Could be the River Thames that killed him.
having been zapped, jumping in the river probably put extra strain on his heart. My guess is he had a heart attack

Yes terrible ending
After seeing the video yesterday the police could have, and should have detained him whilst he was motionless on the floor.

More incompetent idiotic cops.
Funny how they didn't taser the terrorist who brutally killed Jo Cox.

Taser is not the only weapon police have access to and it has to be appropriate to use a taser. There's a lot of instances when it is not appropriate to use one even if there is an immediate threat to life or the assailant is extremely dangerous.
If there's no need to taser someone and they can arrest them without doing so then they will.
It's not just a game of let's go around tasering people for the fun of it

You would think so , yet people with mental health issues have been WRONGLY tasered . And surely this bloke could have been tackled to the ground without being TASERED, it was 2 against 1. He had a screwdriver ( which yes is still a weapon) ,but it's not
the same as having a knife or gun.
Once you kill someone with a taser then that's it . That's why surely TASERS should only be used if it's absolutely necessary. Don't they use batons & pepper spray anymore?? .
to be honest someone armed with a screwdriver is a completely different threat to someone wielding a large weapon that has already attacked someone. So they have to be handled differently

To he force used has to be proportionate, necessary and reasonable.
The fact he was waving a screwdriver around meets all this criteria. It's very much a judgement call made by the officers and they have to back up their reasoning for using such means.
Using a baton would not have been appropriate....using CS doesn't work on all individuals.
You say he could have been safely tackled to the ground. Yes he could have, but that could have resulted in serious harm to the officers and might not have been successful without injury.
Yes, taser is abused, but under the circumstances, it wasn't in this particular case imo.
Him jumping in the river was not the result of the officers. He chose to do that, guessing, to avoid capture.
I doubt the taser alone would have caused his death, but I can't 100% say that as 18 people in the UK have died from taser. I would suspect that he had a cardiac arrest from both the taser and him jumping on the river.
There's definitely a place for tasers imo, but they may require more regulating and more training. You have to be taser trained anyway, but maybe this training could be reviewed.
The IOPC will investigate this particular case anyway and that would be standard following the death of anyone following taser deployment

[He was armed with a plastic firelighter
when he jumped into the River Thames]
His parents
on all the News channels
say he should not have been Tasered.
But he was waving his weapon
they say nothing about that.
He was having a breakdown
Those cops did not know he
was going to Jump in the Thames

I have an Olly Murs song on the brain.
But it's probably a bit insensitive to post on here, as after all I don't wanna be a troublemaker.

No they said it was a screwdriver , i don't know when it all happened so fast and the man was obviously mentally ill, why the hell he jumped into the river so quickly.

It was probably a long handled one that could of been mistaken for a screw driver

Oh I guess that would make sense. It's sad it ended the way it did ..as the man was clearly mentally ill & distressed.
