Sarina Wiegman is tasked with delivering England a first major trophy since 1966
The Dutch coach led the Netherlands to victory on their home soil at Euro 2017
Wiegman has a depth of players Neville was not blessed with three years ago
There is something about the England women’s football squad and fire pits. Before the last World Cup, coach Phil Neville took the players out into the Qatari desert and sat them down around the flames at dusk to share stories and foster mutual respect.
Sarina Wiegman, the 52-year-old Dutch coach who leads them into the European Championship at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, employed the same method in less exotic surrounds. A large communal room was cleared at St George’s Park last October, and a video of flames projected into a drum created a virtual camp fire, as players lounged on beanbags, drank hot chocolate and related their journeys through the sport.
Wiegman’s more functional and spartan setting says much about the difference in the squad’s management between now and when Neville led them to a World Cup semi-final three years ago.
https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/07/02/22/59795707-0-image-a-11_1656796755436.jpg
Neville, who had spent the best part of his life amid the machismo of Manchester United and Everton, seemed to feel a need to convince he belonged in the sometimes bewildering world he had stumbled into. He could be self-deprecating, inspiring, emotional, unintentionally comedic and he expended a lot of energy in the process. ‘Grab it with both arms, both legs, all your body,’ was his message to the team before the semi-final against the United States.
Wiegman, whose Netherlands side lost to the US in the final in 2019, having won the 2017 Euros, feels no need to justify herself. She is the epitome of composure, who does not go in for grand gestures, never uses a sentence when a word will do and can be eye-wateringly direct. Though the players who operated under Neville are reluctant to offer any direct comparison, it is clear that they feel Wiegman represents progress.
‘She takes the emotion out of it,’ says Millie Bright, who will be one of the anchors of England’s central defence. ‘To be in the best football environment you have to have those difficult conversations.
‘It’s never a comment to me directly as a person, more as a footballer, and you have to be like that; have those difficult conversations. If you want to get from A to B you have to go up another level and have them. It’s not personal. It’s football. That’s been our mindset change.’
The bluntness extended to a final squad selection which entailed players waiting together for a text message calling them individually to Wiegman’s room, to hear their fate. We only have the selected players’ word for it, but Wiegman, who dropped former captain Steph Houghton, appears to have handled the process with an emotional fluency that Glenn Hoddle lacked as England manager in 1998, when the same method reduced a discarded Paul Gascoigne to tearful fury.
It helps that Wiegman has a depth of players Neville was not blessed with three years ago. Above all, multiple attacking options including Lauren Hemp, the rapid left-sided 21-year-old forward who is surprisingly self-critical. She declares that her decision-making could be better and that she is too dependent on her left foot. ‘I think I just use the right one to stand on,’ she says.
Harsh, given that she will be a global name and possibly the star of the tournament. Her Manchester City team-mate Chloe Kelly, just back from an ACL injury, could also light up the tournament. Beth Mead, linking with the experienced Lucy Bronze, makes the right flank England’s most dangerous.
The flaw is a vulnerability to counter-attacking drives through central midfield, though this is a different landscape from Neville’s heavy dependence in 2019 on Ellen White, who still leads the line, and Nikita Parris, a fringe squad member now.
There was always an element of Neville bringing his playing experiences to the table and using them to convince his players that they could be dominant, ‘bad ass women’. He quoted that term after hearing Leah Williamson, a back-up defender in 2019 and now the captain, use it.
He urged them to believe in the passing game which was written into the St George’s Park orthodoxy and was an article of faith for the men and women’s teams. Wiegman is not having that. The players are struck by her insistence that they have the intelligence to decide what to do with the ball.
‘Sarina has a thing where the player on the ball is the one who makes the decision and you’re in control,’ says Bright. ‘That’s one thing I’ve really loved about her coming in. You don’t feel pressured to play a certain pass. If it’s wrong, you make a better decision next time. I feel free to be able to play and it gives me confidence.’
These are echoes of Wiegman’s compatriot Louis van Gaal — who, like her, was a PE teacher before a coach. ‘Play with your brain, not your feet,’ he always told his United players, though he put the fear of god in them too. Wiegman and Van Gaal are well acquainted.
Wiegman’s capacity to strip out the visible emotion was evident after England’s friendly against Belgium. She had just returned from the Netherlands after the death of her sister but unflinchingly answered a question about the players’ decision to wear black armbands in support of her.
Her intensity resides in such a relentless search for information to impart to players that she only reads non-fiction books. ‘You have to ensure you deliver quality. And you have to keep developing,’ she told Dutch newspaper Volksrant.
‘Read. Investigate. That applies to everyone, but perhaps even more so for a woman. At such a men’s meeting, for example at my trainer courses, I wait until I really have something to add before I speak. Then you will also be heard. Football players and coaches become stupid if they don’t keep learning and just train, eat, sleep, train.’
https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/07/02/22/59795735-0-image-a-3_1656796661521.jpg
The work ethic is inherited. Her parents ran a dry cleaners in a working-class district of The Hague in addition to other jobs, her mother serving coffee for civil servants at a government ministry, her father working at the Dutch Post Office. She has a twin brother who does not share her sporting intensity. ‘While I was playing football, he picked dandelions for our mother at the edge of the pitch,’ she said.
Her players should beat Austria at a sell-out Old Trafford and, with Northern Ireland also in their group, should only be taxed against a Norway side including Ada Hegerberg and Caroline Graham Hansen a week tomorrow. Then they will learn how good they are, with Sweden, Germany and Spain sharing England’s justifiable aspirations to lift the trophy.
Chelsea’s Bright, 28, has developed since 2019, her 40-yard diagonal passes to Hemp a significant part of the new England. ‘We all want to be the best on the ball and for each other,’ she says. ‘Football is never that simple. If only it was. But everyone has been pushed to new levels. We have the confidence to do new things.’

on paper contenders should be something like England, Netherlands, Germany, France, Sweden
complete outsiders/unknowns are Portugal, Switzerland, Iceland, and what can Belgium do
Spain got letdown with their goalscorer missing out, but most of their barca players in their squad are pretty talented so they could still do more than okayish

our men will never ever ever ever win any world cup titles or any euro cup titles ever again
with the women you never know, and am more curious how good we can do in defending our title from 2017, most of that years team is still here too with just a few newbies here and there

the austrian coach regarding group a
"It is important that we approach the finals with composure; that we see everything that awaits us as a reward; that we enjoy what we do and play well against England. And then that we fulfil our, I’d almost say, ‘duty’ against Northern Ireland so that we have the deciding match against Norway. I think in that match, it’s all about who keeps their cool. We will have it in our own hands."

Don't these things always start off as tokenism?
And in terms of the Sport, I think it's gonna be hard for England Women to be more disappointing than the Blues Women.:joker:
Or just Blues in general tbh.

Tbf he might've been cautious in the last Euros because maybe he thought that Italy were the better team, don't forget that away from our media it was being tipped to be a very close game, and tbf it was but unluckily for us England just missed out.
And in the World Cup we really weren't good enough to beat any of the final three.
I think that some people let the media hype overrate this England team a little bit.
It's a good team, but it's not an exceptional team imo, I honestly think that Southgate achieves the best that he can with the players that his got.

The fact is we have an average defence and midfield yet we are blessed with an abundance of attack minded players and strikers ..
We should simply be more positive.
No other of the top teams play with the security of two holding players like we do .. time and time again - even against very weak opposition.
Southgate was a fabulous defender .. that’s how he thinks

doesn't matter with how much you win it, as long you win it
3 points are 3 points
now for today
Norway and Northern Ireland, Norway are the favourites here but never underestimate a debuting country in competitions like this (for example New Zealand didn't do badly in their first world cup at men's, same goes for Iceland in their debut euro cup at men's)
N.Ireland just have to play their own game, and don't focus too much on the opponents power play, just try to defend as good as you can, and rely on possible counter attacks and don't waste any chances you might get at scoring

Norway: Pettersen; Sønstevold, Mjelde, Thorisdottir, Blakstad; Eikeland, Maanum, Engen, Reiten; Graham Hansen, Hegerberg
Northern Ireland: Burns; Magee, Nelson, McFadden, Burrows, Vance; Magill, Furness, Caldwell, K McGuinness; Wade
media views
Philip O'Connor, Norway reporter
All eyes will be on Ada Hegerberg, the all-time record scorer in the UEFA Women's Champions League who stepped away from the national team after Women's EURO 2017 but returns to provide added bite to an already impressive attack. She will be flanked by Barcelona's Caroline Graham Hansen and Chelsea winger Guro Reiten as Norway try to hit the ground running against Northern Ireland. Captain Maren Mjelde is set to return to the heart of defence after a long-term injury.
Samantha Miller, Northern Ireland reporter
Northern Ireland go into this competition as big underdogs and their qualifying results against Norway don't exactly undermine that status. Yet the finals debutants are a different proposition now, with several more players going full time to gear up for EURO 2022. Rachel Furness will be key to their attacking aspirations, but they may have to do without captain Marissa Callaghan, at least initially, as she returns to fitness following injury.
view from northern irish coach
Kenny Shiels, Northern Ireland coach: "We are not going to make up the numbers. Our first priority is to try and win a game – we have three games, and if we win two of them then more or likely we will reach the quarter-finals. But when you look at the opposition, winning one game will be very tough. It is not beyond the realms of possibility, but we are massive underdogs. We will try and win the first game [against Norway], and if we don't win that then we will try and win the next one."

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg has made no secret of the fact that their full focus has been on preparing for this game. After strolling through the qualifying rounds, they now have a chance to avenge their 2017 quarter-final defeat against Denmark. With a wealth of attacking options at their disposal, including Frauen Bundesliga top scorer Lea Schüller, all eyes will be on seeing how the defence – bolstered by the return of Marina Hegering – holds up. Getting off to a good start will be crucial for Germany.
Sture Sandø, Denmark reporter
This opening match for Denmark could very well turn out to be decisive. The Danes have great respect for their German counterparts, but they still see opportunities to punish them if they leave too much space in behind. We will see a Danish team that will try to play through and past the German pressure and attempt to take advantage of speedy wingers. Look out for forward Pernille Harder, wing-back Sofie Svava and defender Katrine Veje.

Mark Parsons, Netherlands coach: “We’re ready to play. We have a good training session in mind to keep the energy high for tomorrow. But after you see a few games on TV you’re just itching to get out there and play.”
Parsons on whether he will adapt to Sweden: "We are very focussed on how we can bring the best qualities of our players. Tomorrow or any other day that we play won’t be any different. It’s always a question of how we impose ourselves."
More from Parsons: “We have one or two players that we’ll find out about [their fitness] today, but things look positive. We’ll just have to get through training. We’re in a position that we could have hoped for three and a half weeks ago.”
Sari van Veenendaal, Netherlands goalkeeper: "I’m very happy and excited that we can start tomorrow. We’re ready for it. After the Finland game last week, we’ve just been preparing the details of facing Sweden, on and off the pitch. We know about the players, the team… now it’s just important that we show what we can do."
Van Veenendaal on how the team approaches a tournament like this: "We just try to look from game to game. For us there is only one game, and that’s tomorrow. We can't look further than that."

The Dutch players out training on a fine summer's evening in Sheffield.
swedes preview
Stina Blackstenius will not start tomorrow, Sweden coach Gerhardsson confirmed during today's press conference: "One of our strengths in previous tournaments has been the medical team, they give me the exact amount of minutes a player can play, and we will see after today's training. But if I said she would start no one would believe me so it's just as well that I say how it is and I believe it's also a bit alarming for the Netherlands to know she is there but not know how much she will play or what damage she can do."
Gerhardsson says he has decided on a starting XI and formation for tomorrow, but "I don't trust myself, as I am an expert at being able to change my mind". Whether Sweden will start with four or three at the back we will have to wait until tomorrow to see; either way, we are likely to see both formations during the game, the Sweden coach indicated.
This will be Caroline Seger's 13th major tournament for Sweden but she told us that the feeling ahead of the first match never changes.
"I’m older now and I’ve experienced it many times but you still get those butterflies in your stomach and that excitement, the feelings are the same but I think I can cope better with it these days."
The Swedish media officer confirms that 2,600 tickets have been sold to Swedish fans, and we can expect more to show up on Saturday. "It’s probably one of the first tournaments I've been to where we have this many Swedish fans here," says Seger. "It will be very special to have all the blue and yellow here with us, like an extra player."
Caroline Seger, Sweden captain: "There have been a lot of talk and I understand that people have big expectations; we have them too. We're not here to advance from the group; we're dreaming big. But it’s also very important not to get ahead of yourselves, that we play good football and grow into this tournament."

Portugal - Switzerland preview
possible starting line ups
Portugal: Inês Pereira; Catarina Amado, Diana Gomes, Carole Costa, Joana Marchão; Dolores Silva, Tatiana Pinto, Andreia Norton; Kika Nazareth, Jéssica Silva, Diana Silva
Switzerland: Thalmann; Maritz, Bühler, Calligaris, Aigbogun; Xhemaili, Wälti; Reuteler, Sow, Crnogorčević; Bachmann
Portugal were late arrivals at the finals, coming in after Russia were excluded, but they fared respectably on debut at Women's EURO 2017 and have had encouraging results in pre-tournament games. Switzerland have had some punishing friendly encounters –notably a 7-0 loss to Germany – but coach Nils Nielsen led Denmark to the final last time out, and his side should not be underestimated.
reporters views
Carlos Machado, Portugal reporter
The watchword in the Portugal side is 'enjoy'. Reaching England was a bonus and the side will try to continue their best spell for the women's game in the country. In a hard group, Switzerland could be the ideal opponents for a good start as the Portuguese look to fulfil the minimum goal set for this tournament – to at least emulate the three points they mustered in 2017. The atmosphere is excellent and the mix of veterans from that Netherlands tournament plus new blood should make Portugal a better side.
Judith Tuffentsammer, Switzerland reporter
It may be the opening match but the objective is clear: Switzerland need a win. In a group with 2021 Olympic silver medallists Sweden and defending European champions Netherlands, a strong start against Portugal is a must. While the pre-tournament results did not quite go their way, the team is relaxed and ready to get their Women's EURO campaign under way. It's also a special occasion for captain Lia Wälti as she will be playing her 100th match for her country, which will certainly provide some additional motivation for her team.

views from the camps
Francisco Neto, Portugal coach: "Our aim is to perform better than we did in 2017. It was always going to be a tough start for us in this group, no matter who we were up against in the opening game. We know that Switzerland are the closest team to us in the rankings. They have players that ply their trade at top clubs across Europe and are a team that we fully respect but we know that we have our own strengths that will allow us to head into the game full of confidence, and we can compete with them. A victory would give us a massive boost and settle our nerves heading into the other group games."
Nils Nielsen, Switzerland coach: "It's incredibly important, especially in a group like ours, that the first game provides us with at least one point so we are still in the tournament. If we lose the first game, it's going to be a very difficult task to go through the group. They're going to attack us, I'm pretty sure. It's part of their game that they can stay low and attack with fewer players than many of the other teams. That's a quality, but it can also be a problem when they have to change their strategy during the game."

am pleased about our 1-1 draw
Sweden are contenders so, defending the best we can against those giants is amazing
wonderful goal from Roord as well :clap2: good stand in goalkeeper Van Domselaar in her first euro's match and one of her first appearances in national team, very good saves from her
Portugal - Switzerland also a draw (2-2) so all teams still level, on 1 point

preview for today
Belgium - Iceland 18:00 (17:00 UK Time) Manchester
Tessa Wullaert, Belgium forward: "Tomorrow will be a game that will be decided by details. We know that Iceland are very strong in one-on-ones and that we will have to be aware of them from set pieces, but the most important thing is that we stay calm and focused from the first minute."
Ives Serneels, Belgium coach: "This match is not decisive for me. Remember our first game against Denmark in 2017: we lost that and ended up staying in the race until the end. Iceland are a tough team and a team that are always a united unit on the field. There are players with special qualities, but they are also the players that we have to be able to handle. I'm afraid we'll have to be patient."
------------
Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir, Iceland midfielder, on their preparations: "The squad is calm. We have a lot of experienced players and the balance in the team is good. We have been able to control the excitement level really well."
Thorsteinn Halldórsson, Iceland coach, on what they need to do tomorrow: "We need to be aggressive and play a tight game. This will be an even match, Belgium has similar qualities to us but we believe we are better and we need to show that."
More from Halldórsson, on the other games ahead in the group: "You can only play one game at a time, that‘s a fact even though it is a boring phrase. We don't think about anything else than the game tomorrow. Hopefully that will result in a good, solid performance."
More from Gunnarsdóttir, who played her first 90 minutes in a friendly against Poland last week since giving birth in November: "I felt pretty good. The first 75 minutes were solid, and then you got a bit tired which is understandable. But the most important things is that I had a good and quick recovery, which says a lot for the future."

Hallbera Gísladóttir and Berglind Thorvaldsdóttir are the stars in iceland tabloid Fréttablaðið this morning, describing their excitement for the first game: "We know it will be tough, but we also know that we have a team that can get some points."
------------
France - Italy 21:00 (20:00 UK Time) Rotherham
Sara Gama, Italy captain, speaking to UEFA.com: "The anthem is special for us, and it's the climax right before the start of the game."
"We're excited, we've worked hard. We have the right amount of pressure."
''We want to have fun, which means also to be focused, but to enjoy ourselves. If we enjoy these special moments we can do even better."
"Since the 2019 World Cup we have improved; now this is a different competition, we need to do even better, and give our all."
"We want to get started, and show on the pitch what we have prepared so far. We have a smile on our faces."
----
Milena Bertolini, Italy coach, speaking to UEFA.com: "We can't wait to get started, we have trained a lot and cannot wait to start this competition, which is magnificent."
"We are taking it game after game, so for now we are focused on France. But we know that to progress we'll need to beat the others too. Our aim is to progress from the group."
"To face a strong team like France, we need to go beyond our physical and technical qualities, and to do so we need to be united, and be tactically on point, in Italian fashion."
Valentina Cernoia is out of the squad to face France, the Italian FA have announced.
"We will be without Cernoia, but we have other players who can replace her, and we need every single player."
------------------------------------------------
Wendie Renard, France captain, speaking about the base camp in Ashby de la Zouch: "The French Football Federation has made efforts to put us in the best condition. We don't have a network, it's a shame (laughs) but we have wifi. But the most important thing is the game tomorrow."
"I'm very happy to be in a new competition. It's a pride to represent your country and you have to earn it, with or without the armband."
"The first match launches you into the competition. Tomorrow we have to let go and show our qualities. We know what to expect, it is a European championship. We will do everything tomorrow to put ourselves in the best position for the rest of the competition."
"Tomorrow's game is important. It will give us confidence for the rest. The first three games are like a mini championship. We will first concentrate on Italy, then on Belgium and then on Iceland."
Corinne Diacre, France coach: "Everyone is doing well in their mental and physical aspects."
"Now we start another competition. We must reset the counters to zero. We take the three teams at the same level. It's up to us to stay focused, to listen to our bodies and not take any risks in the last training session.I hope for an open game. I think it's going to be a close game."

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10998333/England-defeat-rebel-cause-Norways-Ada-Hegerberg-form.html
and tomorrow we got England - Norway, another potentially top match
England meet Norway in their second group game of Euro 2022 on Monday
The Lionesses beat Austria 1-0 in front of over 68,000 fans at Old Trafford
While Norway cruised to an impressive 4-1 victory over Northern Ireland
Former Ballon d'Or Feminin winner Ada Hegerberg will lead Norway's attack
There is an intensity about Ada Hegerberg and the Norway team who will present England's biggest group stage challenge of the European Championship when the teams clash in Brighton on Monday.
While England have had a card school going — with forward Nikita Parris the one to beat — the Norwegians like to do crossword puzzles. And then there is their approach to the football.
Norway could have scored seven as they beat Northern Ireland 4-1 on Thursday but Hegerberg, whose standards have made her one of the world's top players, was making no bones about the goal the team conceded.
https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/07/09/20/60078797-10998333-image-a-6_1657393364246.jpg
Norway's Ada Hegerberg returned to the national team and will lead the line against England
'We were asleep at the beginning of the second half,' she said.
'We can't let this happen because it will be a completely different level against England.'
As uncompromising players go, the 26-year-old is right up there with Megan Rapinoe, who has just led the American team in their successful $24million legal suit against the US Soccer Federation over 'inequality in pay and treatment'.
After Norway's disastrous 2017 Euros, in which they failed to register a point, or a goal, Hegerberg cut off all ties with the national team, insisting that the country's FA always prioritised the men.
She was vindicated when a subsequent inquiry set up by the country's FA, led by former international Karen Espelund, eviscerated Norwegian football's men in suits.
Yet she maintained her exile while becoming arguably Europe's supreme player, pivotal to Lyon's crushing of Barcelona in last season's Champions League and first winner of the Ballon d'Or Feminin.
Now she is back following a 20-month lay-off with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, with Norway waiting to discover if she can finally flourish in the national team.
Her struggle to make an impact in the 2017 Euros have drawn comparisons in Norway with her compatriot Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who lacked the strong players around him that helped him to score so freely for Manchester United.
Both players' international tallies are good — Hegerberg has 42 goals in 71 games, Solskjaer hit 23 in 67.
The evidence of the nine months since her return to the fray is that Norway are more capable of supplying her than they were five years ago.
They have a greater number of elite players operating on her level now. Not just Barcelona's Caroline Graham-Hansen but Arsenal's Frida Maanum and Chelsea's Guro Reiten.
This is a Norway side with quality in depth.
'Hegerberg seems like a much more mature player than last time on the national team,' says Solveig Gulbrandsen, who commentates for Norwegian broadcaster TV2.
The former national men's team's manager, Egil Olsen, feels they could be less concerned with possession and more focused on attacking passes between the lines for Hegerberg and Hansen.
Privately, the England team may reflect that Hegerberg's self-imposed exile have enhanced the demands for greater equality.
New Zealand Cricket announced last week that their women's national team and domestic women's players will receive the same match fees as men, from next month.
England's Jill Scott said that she was not looking for this kind of parity. 'In any job, if someone was to offer you more money, you wouldn't decline it, would you?' she said.
'I always think women's football is on a journey. Where we've come from to where we are now is massive.'
Lucy Bronze, who played with Hegerberg at Lyon, says the striker's competitive instinct is what makes the difference.
'She's just obsessed with scoring,' she said.
Hegerberg said of Norway's opening match: 'If we can make it a little easier, then we can score a lot more goals.'

tonight Netherlands
without v.Veenendaal, whom left the squad and got replaced by Jacintha Weimar
without Jackie Groenen, Vivianne Miedema both tested positive for covid
will be tricky vs Portugal then and i fully expect Sweden to win over Switzerland so we do somehow have to get ourselves a win as well

some good news for us tomorrow, Jackie Groenen tested negative and can play  still nothing from Miedema though
and literally anything can still happen in our group
i really hope Portugal can somehow fight harder to surprisingly sneak through past Sweden, i quite like them
think the Swiss will be another tough opponent like Portugal but we really need everyone to bring out their A-Game and we need to finish 1st no matter what cost, we need to avoid France
and then monday
i'd say one of Italy, Belgium has better odds to go through, while Iceland is facing France and i'd give Belgium good chances they played decent against the french

after 90 mins 0-0 at the very least, great work from Van Domselaar, many many amazing saves, same goes for van der gragt
but Miedema :hehe:
France really will have it more difficult against Germany whom do have a in form offence compared to NL, so they will have to be more careful and be more clinical not to waste that many chances
oh well, last 8 not that badly from defending our title, not as embarrassing as a Norway for example (stranded in group stage and also a 8-0 white wash from england, that for a team who got a ballon d'or feminine winner :fan:)

England - Sweden
based on quarter final matches, i hope Toone will start for england if Sarina is smart, someone like Mead was hopelessly out of form last match so i'd say bench her and you got a very experienced backup option
Swedes need to be more clinical in terms of their chances as well, but i don't want to be too overconfident towards England now, there is no such thing as easy matches in semi finals
France - Germany
i'd say germans can edge that one, with Magull, Popp, although getting past Renard will be more tricky i think, and Kharchaoui is also a dangerous left back whom can also be a threat from the left wing, and then they also have Clara Mateo on the bench whom is also very talented
i really don't know anymore now

https://www.theweek.co.uk/news/sport/football/957467/england-vs-sweden-semi-final-team-news-predictions
Sarina Wiegman has urged her England players to “inspire the nation” by beating Sweden and reaching the final of the Uefa Women’s Euro 2022. Since taking over in September last year, the Lionesses are unbeaten in 18 games under their head coach, winning 16 of 18 matches and scoring 100 goals in the process.
Wiegman, who coached her native Netherlands to Euro victory in 2017, is expecting a “very tight” and “difficult” semi-final against the Swedes, but said the England team is “ready to play their best game”. Praising the fans for bringing “lots of energy” in their previous games, she hopes the squad will “make them proud again”.
England reached the semi-finals with a 2-1 extra-time victory over Spain, while Sweden were 1-0 winners against Belgium. The winners of tonight’s clash at Bramall Lane in Sheffield will face Germany or France in the Uefa Women’s Euro final at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday.
Semi-final hoodoo
England have “lost in the semi-finals at each of their last three major tournaments”, said Sky Sports. At Euro 2017 they were beaten by Wiegman’s Netherlands and they were also defeated at the last four stage at the 2019 and 2015 World Cups.
When asked about the semi-final hoodoo, Wiegman said “it’s necessary to be in the now”. She added: “I do think you always have to learn from your experience and take out the things that you can take, to become better and learn. But it’s no use now to talk about that all the time, because it’s now, it is now. So why should we talk about that all the time?”
Chasing their first ever major trophy in the women’s game, England are now just “two wins away from immortality”, said Greg Lea on World Sports Network. The Lionesses must not “underestimate” their opponents though. This is a Swedish team “on the up” having reached the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup and the final of the Olympics in Japan last year. “They are now out to take the next step and pick up a piece of silverware.”
Sweden will have a ‘very good plan’
England are “considered favourites” to book their place at the Euro 2022 final, said Emma Sanders on the BBC. However, standing in their way is the highest-ranked team in the competition.
In a word, England’s record against Sweden is “shocking”, said the BBC. The teams previously locked horns 26 times, but the Lionesses have won only three, with Sweden winning 15 and eight games ending in a draw.
Sweden head coach Peter Gerhardsson is expecting an “interesting challenge”, and he and his staff will have to create a “good plan” against the host nation. “I can assure that we’re going to have a plan – and we need a good plan, we need a very good plan, and maybe we need an extremely, very good plan,” he said. “It’s a really good team. It’s going to be an interesting challenge. I think we are very difficult to beat.”
Kick-off time and UK TV coverage
Tonight’s semi-final at Bramall Lane kicks off at 8pm (BST). The match is live in the UK on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with coverage starting at 7.25pm. Presenter Gabby Logan is joined in the studio by analysts Alex Scott, Ian Wright and Anouk Hoogendijk. Match commentators are Robyn Cowen and Rachel Brown Finnis.
Team news and possible starting XIs
Wiegman will have all 23 players available for tonight’s match. Therefore “tactical decisions will dominate the coach’s thinking”, said Marc Mayo in the London Evening Standard. After coming on as a sub against Spain, Alex Greenwood is “tipped” to step in for Rachel Daly at left-back. Ella Toone and Alessia Russo are “also pushing to start”.
Sweden will hope that Hanna Glas, Emma Kullberg and Jonna Andersson are available after the trio missed the quarter-final due to Covid-19, said Ben Sully on SportsMole. Veteran midfielder Caroline Seger has missed the past two games after battling a heel injury.
England possible starting XI (3-5-2)
Mary Earps; Alex Greenwood, Millie Bright, Lotte Wubben-Moy; Lucy Bronze, Keira Walsh, Georgia Stanway, Leah Williamson, Beth Mead; Ellen White, Lauren Hemp
Sweden possible starting XI (4-4-2)
Hedvig Lindahl; Nathalie Björn, Magdalena Eriksson, Linda Sembrant, Hanna Glas; Filippa Angeldal, Kosovare Asllani, Amanda Ilestedt, Hanna Bennison; Stina Blackstenius, Fridolina Rolfo
Pundit predictions
England’s semi-final record at major tournaments is “dicey”, said Luke Baker in The Independent. But in Wiegman, “they have the ultimate tournament manager” and this is a side “bristling with confidence and self-belief”. The Lionesses “should be able to get the job done”. England 3-1 Sweden.
“Another nervy night could be on the cards” for the hosts, said Marc Mayo in the London Evening Standard. But Sweden’s high press “could play into the hands of a team capable of moving the ball quickly and being clinical in front of goal”. A 2-0 England win.
“If history is any indication”, Sweden should be able to emerge triumphant here, said Shubham Dupare on SportsKeeda. However, the current form is the “most important factor”, and there are “very few teams in better form than the Lionesses in women’s football at the moment”. The home support will “rally” behind the Lionesses, “who could win this one”. England 2-1 Sweden.
Sweden are a really good team on the counter-attack and are good at set-pieces, Arsenal’s Swedish manager Jonas Eidevall told the BBC. They would be the “two main concerns” playing against them. However, England are also “absolutely capable” of beating Sweden. “It’s a coin toss between them. It’s 50-50 which team is going to advance.”

But her main job is to defend that RB area - I only watched the first half and they could have scored 5 on a different night just coming from that RB area .

I agree we were close to conceding in the 1st half but we didn’t concede any goals in the 2nd half so Sarina definitely made the right choice to keep her on, she scored within 3 mins once the 2nd half started.

imagine White against Renard :laugh3: lol if she already struggled against swedish defence, she'll have no chance whatsoever against that french giant :fan:

Sweden was just Asllani and Blackstenius as strongest players and the rest were amateurs

also Lucy Bronze does a perfect job as RB, modern days football RB job is to deliver assists and be more of a RW, same goes for LB into a LW
defence job falls into responsibilities of CB's and Williamson, Bright are a super solid duo for now, but so far hasn't had a tough opponent, luck of the draw being in the easier half, rather than facing a in form Germany or France earlier on
Nicky91
27-07-2022, 08:57 AM
England played alright but i'll only begin cheering when there is reason for cheers, if the girls can win in the final
and either France or Germany will be a first real test
in terms of backs, France has a solid one in Kharchaoui but also solid wingers like Cascarino, as for goalkeeper Peyraud-Magnin is also pretty consistently good
starting 11s (possible)
Germany: Frohms, Gwinn, Hegering, Hendrich, Rauch, Oberdorf, Dabritz, Magull, Huth, Brand, Popp
France: Peyraud-Magnin, Périsset, Mbock Bathy, Renard, Kharchaoui, Geyoro, Bilbault, Toletti, Diani, Malard, Cascarino
no Buhl for Germans, she tested positive for covid but Schuller is now fully back with the squad, and fully fit, on the reserves bench topscorer of the bundesliga, but they prefer to go with the one in form here so far, Alexandra Popp, such a luxury problem when you got two top goalscorers

Germany and France collide tonight for the right to meet England in the final of Women’s Euro 2022 at Wembley.
Eight-time champions Germany are out to reclaim the crown they lost in the Netherlands five years ago, and boast a 100 per cent record so far in the tournament.
Austria were dispatched with relative ease in the quarters with Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s side still yet to concede a goal, against 11 scored.
France meanwhile required extra-time to down the Dutch at the weekend.
A place in the showpiece against England awaits the winners tonight after the hosts demolished Sweden 4-0 at Bramall Lane on Tuesday.
Germany vs France is scheduled for an 8pm BST kick-off time tonight, Wednesday, July 27, 2022.
Stadium MK in Milton Keynes will host tonight’s semi-final.
Where to watch Germany vs France
TV channel: In the UK, the game will be televised live on BBC One, with coverage starting at 7.30pm.
Live stream: The match will also be broadcast live via the BBC Sport website and iPlayer app.
Live blog: You can follow all the action via Standard Sport’s live blog with Matt Verri.
Germany vs France team news
Germany forward Klara Buehl will miss the clash after testing positive for Covid-19, though the rest of the squad are negative.
“She is currently symptom-free and was immediately isolated. Further tests of the entire team and staff were negative,” Germany said of Buehl on Twitter.
France are set to be unchanged, meanwhile.
Germany vs France prediction
Little has looked like stopping the Germans in their march to the final but France’s quality will make this a tight, and potentially long, semi-final showdown.
A 1-0 Germany win.

top quality match, from both sides, Germany were just better allround, all working together as a team in terms of both defence and offence
bringing Magull off, hmmm not sure if i agree with that, but in all fairness Dallmann, Lohmann on were good choices from Martina, to try something different and bring even more creativity

was a nailbiter of a match, Frohms first time she was being tested, overall not bad and that 1 french goal, not much she could've done about it, she was at the right corner anyway and just unlucky it came of her back into the goal, but she had to go for that corner because you never know otherwise if you don't do anything
same goes for french goalie, also just two stunning goals from Popp, not exactly she could've done against those as well
France will get to a final i'm sure in some year to come, Renard is also a star, same goes for Kharchaoui, Diani
england got a tough one here, germans who do everything together, forwards who also go helping out in defence wherever necessary
will be a fun final, and no shame if england loses, since germany are an 8 time european champion anyway but hoping for a strong quality final from both sides

Alexandra Popp in footsteps of Michel Platini
https://onefootball.com/en/news/alexandra-popp-makes-european-championship-history-35528143
There’s a sense of inevitability about Alexandra Popp.
The Euro 2022 semi-final between Germany and France, which you can follow here, was a tight and tentative affair until the 40th minute.
Svenja Huth’s delicate cross found the on-rushing Popp inside the French box and bang, the German captain’s first-time volley burst into the back of the net to break the deadlock.
It was some goal to score in a game of huge magnitude and in doing so, Popp has equalled and broke records all at the same time.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-07-28/germany-england-sold-out-final-wembley-womens-euros-football/101276626
Germany have set up what looms as an historic and record-breaking women's Euros final against hosts England at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
Tickets to the final at London's Wembley Stadium — with a capacity of 87,200 — are sold out. The stadium is the largest sports venue in the UK and second-largest stadium in Europe.
Anything near a capacity crowd for the final would comfortably beat the highest-ever women's Euros attendance number, which currently sits at 68,871 for the opening game of this tournament between England and Austria at Old Trafford.
The highest-ever attendance for an international women's football match is 90,185, for the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup final between the USA and China.
Attendance and viewing numbers have been at an all-time high for the 2022 edition of the Euros, with that trend continuing in the two semi-finals.
The Lionesses' 4-0 victory over Sweden drew the all-time biggest crowd for a women's Euro semi-final, with 28,624 in attendance at Bramall Lane.
The match also drew a peak audience of 9.3 million across BBC television and streaming services — the biggest audience for the tournament so far.
By comparison, the highest peak TV audience for women's football in the UK is 11.7 million, when England's lost to the United States in the semi-final of the 2019 Women's World Cup.
The semi-final between Germany and France then drew 27,445 spectators at Milton Keynes on Wednesday, the highest number for a women's Euro semi-final not involving the host team.
It continues an overall trend of booming attendance numbers for women's football in Europe this year, with 91,553 and 91,648 attending the Champions League quarter and semi-finals hosted by Barcelona.
This year's Euros tournament is also by far the most well-attended in history, with the previous total of 240,055 spectators broken during the group stages.
90,000 at Wembley: 'To be honest, there's nothing better'
German captain Alex Popp was the hero for her side on Wednesday, after scores were level at 1-1 and both teams missing chances.
She had scored the opening goal for Germany in the 40th minute, but that lead lasted less than five minutes before France equalised. It was the first time Germany had conceded for the tournament.
In the 76th minute, Popp proved the difference again, leaping above the French defence to send a bouncing header into the French goal.
Popp has scored in all five of Germany's games so far — a new record — after missing the last two European Championships in 2013 and 2017 because of injuries.
Popp will now face off against England's Beth Mead with the two players the top scorers for the tournament, with six goals each.
"I can't find any words. We played a crazy game, we threw in everything we had," Popp told German broadcaster ZDF.
"We're now in the final against England in front of 90,000 at Wembley. To be honest, there's nothing better."
A late surge wasn't enough as France fell short of reaching what would have been a first major tournament final and has now lost in the semi-final stage once in each of the World Cup, Olympics and European Championship.
Before the game, Germany's players posed holding the number 19 shirt of winger Klara Bühl, who had started all four previous games but missed the semi-final following a positive test for COVID-19 on Tuesday.
The decider between England and Germany will be the first women's Euros final to be held at Wembley, with the stadium twice holding the men's final, in 1996 and 2021.
With Wembley's capacity of 87,200, the crowd for the final will comfortably break the highest-ever women's Euros attendance
The semi-final between England and Sweden drew a peak TV audience of 9.3 million in the UK
German captain Alexandra Popp was the hero for her side, scoring twice in the 2-1 victory over France
Germany are fast starters apparently and we have started slowly and poorly in most of our games
That’s a major concern ( on a par with all the space Bronze leaves behind when she roams upfield)

Good luck to the ladies. I won't be watching. I don't watch rubbish, sh!te. I rarely watch men's football these days because that's gone crap, so women's football has no chance with me.

Hopefully this is a huge step forward for women’s footballThey've already received more promotion of their game in the short time it's been going then a lot of other sports have in over 100 years.
TV viewers will watch whatever's put in front of them and promoted to watch. It all comes down to promotion of an event. That's why many won't care if there's a Rugby League World cup in a few months time. Yet us in the Rugby League community are looking forward to it just like any major sporting championships.
This women's team would probably get hammered by a mens pub team, but because it's promoted, people want it.
Maybe I sound miserable, but I don't care, I just find it all fake.

So many clubs have shot themselves in the foot by not allowing the games to be played at their stadiums.....sponsors not wanting to be part of it and then this happens. Love it

I don't get why it has to be a competition? Rugby have their followers, women theirs. I like football, not a big fan of rugby but if England win the Rugby League World Cup, I will congratulate them and celebrate their win.
You don't sound miserable, a bit bitter maybe by diminishing the women by saying a pub team would beat them whilst wanting people to support england in the rugby?
Just a bit sad that so many men are trying to put the ladies down, on here and on socials.

Just a bit sad that so many men are trying to put the ladies down, on here and on socials.I actually did wish them luck and congratulated them on winning. And it's not the footballing girls that my criticism is aimed at. It's the media and how they promote certain things compared to others.
Even American Football gets better promotion in this country than Rugby League.
everything has it's time. Personally, i think womens football will take a long time, if ever before it gets to a similar situation as say womens tennis.
