View Full Version : What is the difference between Gay and Queer?

I was just doing a twitch survey, and it asked my sexual orientation. Yeah im thick when it comes to some of this stuff, but i generally thought "queer" just meant "gay"? I did try and look it up, but it still doesn't really make sense?

Maybe im getting old, i remember watching Queer as Folk 20 odd years ago (was far to young to be watching that, used to watch it late night on Channel 4 on my portable). And that was just about gay guys in Manchester. Has the meaning of "queer" now changed?

GAY is the new word

I think it’s more of an umbrella term for anything other than straight and cisgender, like if you’re somewhere on the spectrum, no matter where it is, you can fall under the label of ‘queer’, I’m personally not a massive fan of the term

Well i did think it was an outdated term. But on this survey you're given many choices that include Gay, Lesbian, Queer amongst others. I understand all the others, just wondered what identifying your sexual orientation as "Queer" actually means nowadays.

Ah alright thanks, makes a bit more sense now.

From what i've read the LGBT Community is spilt on the term "queer"

Maybe, but in the late 90's/early/mid 00's a few quite popular shows had "queer" in the titles. And "fag" is a lot more American imo, Fag to me has always meant "cigarette"

Would pegging be regarded as being queer?

Gay is the giver, queer is the receiver.

Yeah fag was always a cigarette growing up although as the years went on I found myself phasing it out and never use it anymore now.

im very glad i gave up smoking years ago or i would be in a lot of trouble these days. Fanny is another term competing for attention with the default not using it at all anymore

I always considered queer to be a slur. Fag has always been a tricky one because to me it has two meanings. I’ve used it because it’s always meant cigarette to me but I wouldn’t use the term Fag around someone that was gay because I’m aware that can be insulting to the LGBT community.

If i go for the odd ciggy now, i just use the word "smoke". "gonna pop outside for a quick smoke" for example.

I still think sexually identifying as "queer" is just strange nowadays. But im genuinely curious about all these terms people sexually identify as.
