View Full Version : How often do you feel misunderstood by the people around you (and to what extent)?

Is the general perception of you more in-sync with your actual personality than not or so laughably (and infuriatingly) far-removed from anything vaguely-like the real you that you’ve given up expecting even family and close friends understanding you more than 30 to 40% of the way?

I’m somewhere between 2 and 3. The people who don’t get me really, really don’t get me (not necessarily in such a bad way but they’re way off the mark) but I do have a pretty eclectic list of acquaintances who I’ve positively vibed with over the years so I can’t confine real understanding of who l am to just family and close mates. And ultimately everyone misunderstands everyone at some point or other (I don’t think it’s really possible for anyone to know someone 100%) but just having a vaguely-accurate and respectful picture of who someone is based off some sort of tangible interaction/s with them is enough for me. The people who know me know me well enough to be able to intuitively fill in the rest of the blanks in as much as some things might take them by surprise at first. With everyone else I’m far from the most open book on the planet (nor the most trusting, not anymore) but I do kind of like giving them a chance because I’m not one of those super-enigmatic, cloistered types. Just reserved and pensive. Once you’re kind of in, we’re pretty okay in terms of mutual understanding.

Yeah, especially when you just make a simple joke when replying to a post on a forum with the word "Liquorice" to a post that said they wanted to be "all sorts" when they grew up. And you ignorantly get told to "go away" for that harmless joke. I feel like I must have been misunderstood or read the room wrong.

Scottish half-bait ISFPs on the other hand are a law unto themselves. I don’t think they even count on being understood.

We blaspheme like mad on this place but it’s often for good reason. “Turn the other cheek” and ‘I’m here with good intentions’ are not the one. Not really.

One thing I’ve never understood is people who enjoy wasting breath gossiping about people they know they don’t know very well just to talk or get attention. You know there’s hardly a single shred of accuracy in what you’re saying (to all intents and purposes you’re just using the other person’s face to talk about a completely different person, one who only exists in your head and in accordance with your own experiences) so why bother wasting saliva? Can’t you just use your imaginary best friend for clout?

On here in the written word.
I do think people must feel I've misunderstood them.
Equally I have felt I've been misunderstood on here too.

That can be the problem with the written word however.

In personal interactions through my life this far, I can't recall feeling I've been misunderstood however.

Never.
I reckon people know exactly what is what with me.
