A witness to the attack tells the BBC News Channel that those in attendance are "still reeling" from the events.
"It was just an absolutely horrific thing to witness," says Carl Levan.
He says he was sitting 14 or 15 rows back in the covered amphitheatre in New York state when the attack happened.
Rushdie was "repeatedly stabbed" after his attacker ran onto the stage from the audience's left, Levan says.

I think Sky News think that Mr Rushdie is the problem in this.
What a headline from them after the guy has just been stabbed. But they don't care, it's all about clicks and attention.

i don't think he is going to survive.....
Another account of the attack comes from John Nolen from US network CBS, who had family members in the audience of the event.
The assailant - who appeared to a man with a knife - is said to have struck Rushdie many times in the neck and torso area.
Rushdie reportedly stood up and fell backwards as he tried to get away. A number of people came to his aid and others restrained the attacker, Nolen says.
There appeared to be blood splattered on the screen behind Rushdie's chair.

And seriously why does it feel like it's becoming a trend to physically attack people that you don't like? Can't people have a more healthy attitude when it comes to people that they don't like anymore?

That's just ****ed up that someone has put a price on his head in the first place.
The suspect who has been arrested, 24-year-old Hadi Matar, accessed the grounds the way any other event goer did, police say.
The suspect jumped on stage, stabbed Salman Rushdie in the neck at least once and in the abdomen at least once, police say.
People in the centre rushed the suspect and took him ground, and he was later taken into police custody.

Nope, it wasn't removed. The iranian government tried to say it was no longer applicable, but the religious boss said it was still in effect, and the iranian media have been topping up the reward too
Salman Rushdie's agent has said "the news is not good" after the author was stabbed at an event in New York state.
He was attacked on stage, and is now on a ventilator and unable to speak, Andrew Wylie said in a statement, adding that the author will lose one eye.
Mr Rushdie has suffered years of Islamist death threats after writing The Satanic Verses, published in 1988.
Police detained a suspect named as Hadi Matar, 24, from Fairview, New Jersey.
New York State Police said the suspect ran onto the stage and attacked Mr Rushdie and an interviewer at an event at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York state.
"Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged," his agent, Andrew Wylie said.
No motive or charges have yet been confirmed by police, who are in the process of obtaining search warrants to examine a backpack and electronic devices found at the centre.
Mr Rushdie was stabbed at least once in the neck, and at least once in the abdomen, authorities said. He was taken to a hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania, by helicopter.

Well Hadi Matar will be a hero to the Islamic world if Rushdie dies. He will be the one who brought justice to a blasphemer..
Blasphemy is seen as a heinous crime deserving of death in Islam, according to many good Muslims. Salman is seen as Blasphemer, why else has that bounty been increasing over the years
It is not so long ago the UK had blaspheme law and an editor of Gay news was successfully convicted of blasphemy in a case brought by the late Mary Whitehouse.
We should not be quick to criticise Hadi Matar, as that would be Islamaphobia and anyone doing so will be sanctioned by lefties.

Personally speaking there shouldn't be an issue with pulling up issues with any community imo as long as it's constructive criticism.
Whether it be Hadi Matar or Mary Whitehouse, nobody should be able to punish someone else just because they challenge your beliefs.
If anything what this Salman Rushdie case has proven is that Islam has extremists in it's Religion, and that the moderate Muslims aren't really doing anything to stop them.

"Freedom of speech does not entitle one to falsely shout fire in a crowded theatre"
Salman Rushdie wrote a work that is seen as Blasphemous, and he should have known that it was so. He should also have known how seriously the Islamic world considers Blaspheme. Remember the disgraceful cartoons of the Holy Prophet Mohammed, and the hurt that caused?
He trampled on the feelings of millions of people with that book, and his work has been responsible for many deaths. Blaspheme is a bit more than a mild insult. The word comes from two Greek words which translate as "Injurious speech". Lets not forget the tax payers money that was used to protect him here in the UK
Salman has been the author of his own misfortune.

Even in the UK you can be prosecuted for things you say and write under UK law.But shouting "fire" in a theatre isn't really one's own opinion on something, unless there really was a fire. It's a dangerous act.
Having an opinion and being critical of an idea is totally different.
The fact someone has to resort to violence instead of debate against that opinion shows up their interpretation of the idea to not seem very logical and shows them to be a danger to a free society, a danger like someone shouting "fire" in a theatre.
I saw Geert Wilders also receiving similar threats on twitter yesterday.

The comic and magician had been due to play two nights at The Pleasance at Edinburgh International Conference Centre on Friday and Saturday.
The Pleasance said the second night would not go ahead as his material "does not align with our values".
Sadowitz, 61, an American-born Scot, is known for aggressive stand-up performances.
He said on Twitter: "Did a show last night, 75 mins, thought it went well. Didn't see any walkouts.

for Shia extremism and
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).]

Salman in the Studio saying he used the tube
to get to the studio in Westminster
no protection with him.
It appears he has had no protection

He has given a Great Interview on CNN HD USA on UK TV.
The Surgeon who saved his life,
said he was Lucky?
That Luck was the Attacker
did not know how to Kill Someone with a Knife.
His face was Stapled together
right after the attack.
He said the Audience Saved him on Stage
by pulling off the attacker.
27 seconds he had the Evil Terrorist Man attacking and stabbing him.
He lived with his Mum
a Loner.
He is still to go to court
