View Full Version : Power Blackouts are expected over the winter

The National Grid has said that controlled Power Blackouts during the winter for up to 3 hours are a strong possibility as the UK could run out of supplies

British households could lose power for up to three hours at a time this winter if gas supplies run extremely low, National Grid has warned.

The company said it was an "unlikely" scenario but added that supply interruptions were a possibility if the energy crisis escalated.

Cuts would probably occur at peak times such as morning or early evening, and customers would be warned in advance.

But as a "base case" National Grid expects homes will face no problems.

The UK is heavily reliant on gas to produce electricity, with gas-fired power stations generating more than 40% of the country's electricity. It also imports electricity from the Continental Europe.

National Grid - which keeps the lights on in England, Scotland and Wales - said Russia's invasion of Ukraine had created "unprecedented turmoil and volatility" in the energy markets.

Gas flows from Russia to Europe have been all but cut off, leaving countries scrambling for alternative supplies.

Although Britain is far less reliant on Russian gas than mainland Europe, it could still suffer knock-on effects from any shortfalls in supplies on the continent, National Grid said.

What about charging your phone and stuff in the freezer, or being able to go on the Internet if you have no data. And freezing. No electric fire or heating if you're only electric.

Well, I got rid of my freezer saving £15.00 electric every month but I do have a freezer compartment my fridge. So fridge/freezer will go off.

my country 50% from USA, and 50% was from Russia

rather than Germany whom massively rely on russian gas

and here gas and energy companies said they've been saving up additional gas as a extra buffer, but the gas flow from the US can continue to keep coming in so here we should be able to get through winter, but people need to shower lesser time, more like 10 minutes at maximum, but preferably 5 minutes, and lesser washing hands with warm water but cold water

lesser turning your heaters on, (well here with us, we turn heaters back off to 14 or 15 for example at night, sleep with extra blankets, and during the day not warmer than around 18, 19, 20 i mean too warm also isn't comfortable for me personally)

i would imagine the chance of blackout is directly related to how cold the coming winter is going to be. So, no-one can predict with any certainty yet

it makes sense for us to conserve energy, but its businesses where the saving could make a real difference

A public information campaign to help people reduce energy bills this winter was pulled by No 10 on the grounds of cost, a cabinet minister has said.

The campaign to encourage household energy saving would have cost up to £15m, Nadhim Zahawi told the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme.

The PM's office raised objections to the plan, the BBC reported on Friday.

And asked about the possibility of winter blackouts, Mr Zahawi said these were "very unlikely".

Amid concerns about rising household energy costs, the government has said it would limit average bill rises to £2,500 through government borrowing, at a cost of £60bn for six months.

To help people save energy and cut costs, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) had been preparing a public information campaign.

But Liz Truss is reported to have been "ideologically opposed" to the campaign, fearing it would be too interventionist.

Does he think we are that stupid? It's an outright lie that the campaign was cancelled do to cost
