$96 a year is nothing, why would anyone whinge about that?
Bear in mind that Twitter sucks, so people who care enough about their "social standing" on that hellhole to pay even 8p a year are basically branding IDIOT on their own forehead.

Those that can afford it
pay the $8 a month
No idea what on Earth you are all talking about … but if he starts charging for different things surely people will leave in their droves .
I will not be paying a dime / cent / penny

You do not have to Pay
it is easy to understand.
Like there is a Twitter Professional
Already there which means you can
Fast Re-Tweet someone.
Example
https://twitter.com/OwenJones84
His account is Verified as UK Owen Jones,
Left Winger (that's how I describe him)
he has a Tick.
So He will pay the $8 a month to keep it
or the Guardian will etc

It does not
who you know on Twitter
helps you.
If you find a hellhole
Unfollow those freaks.
This Blur Tick
regard it as a Twitter Professional extension.

The blue tick isn't though.
So sad these celebs will now need to choose between tweeting and heating :(
i had to laugh at some of the arguments against it today .... "how will we know what sources to trust without the blue tick" .... like Trump was a trusted source :joker:

Blue ticks have always been the worst dweebs on there, but the prioritising blue tick replies has undercut his free speech bonafides instantly.

And the bar was very low for a blue tick, there were all sorts of crackpots with very few followers with it
He'd be better off getting rid altogether

You do not have to have it

Require everyone to use their real name and verify their identity on sign-up. No need for blue ticks, no fake accounts, no bots, far less trolling.
To sign up as a company or organisation, make it that the email address has to be @ the official site.
I'm not generally a fan of the idea of verified ID being required for everything but the initial idea behind Twitter was that people would use their real name and photo... it was never intended to be an anonymous trolling platform but that's what it increasingly is becoming.
, maybe if he wasn't being a prick things would be different

The fact that 21.7% voted against free speech.:umm2:
But when it comes to Elon Musk he strikes me as someone that only cares about free speech when it suits him.

Twitter is such a cesspool of garbage , so glad i don't use it ... so i can't imagine paying £8 a month for a silly blue tick. I wouldn't even pay a penny .
So his first job was to sack 50% of the Twitter staff !!!

Fair enough, a lot of them were probably just being paid to warm seats anyway, and as a tech guy he probably knows more effective ways to run it.
Also, if he wants less moderation, that obviously means less staff

Media get their company to
pay the $8 for them
it's his company, he could make himself the only employee if he wanted
The previous board were the problem with twitter. It hasn't generated any income in years, you cant blame musk for that. The guy is a prick, but its his company now, he can do what he wants with it
I’ll never understand finances ..
He says they are over staffed and losing £4 million a day then sacks 4,000 workers giving them all 3 months severance pay !?
Surely that’s gonna cost an absolute fortune in the coming days / weeks !?

its a finite cost though, and paying them 2 months is a lot less than paying them indefinitely

I'd say do it the other way round - absolutely no accounts should have visible ties to your real identity. You can't be "trolled" if no-one knows who you are :joker:
Wait a min, isn't Reddit like that? You don't log in, and when you post it's just a random string of numbers?

3 months wages for half the staff payable up front ( now ) seems like a massive outgoing / expense if they are leaking money each day though

every company that is leaking money does exactly the same, its standard practice. Its 60 days btw, and that is so he doesnt fall foul of california employment law

Elon Musk says Twitter users engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying it as a parody account will be permanently suspended.
Twitter previously issued a warning before suspending accounts, but there would now be no warning, he announced.
A number of accounts that changed their name to Elon Musk and mocked the billionaire have already been suspended or placed behind a warning sign.
Twitter's billionaire new owner took over the company late last month.
At the end of last week he laid off around half of the company's workforce.
He has also confirmed plans to allow users to buy blue-tick, verified status.
Detailing the new policy on parody accounts, Mr Musk tweeted: "Previously, we issued a warning before suspension, but now that we are rolling out widespread verification, there will be no warning."
He added that "any name change at all will cause temporary loss of verified checkmark".

Leave aside the usual arguments about how Twitter has poisoned public debate,
making it more tribalistic, spiteful and self-righteous. Leave aside, too, the way
that (as I wrote on Saturday) Twitter has turned opinions into fashion
statements, which people adopt purely to stay in with the in-crowd. All too
often, when people tweet an opinion, they aren’t saying, “Here’s what I think
about this particular topic.” What they’re really saying is, “I want to signal that
I’m part of the social group that expresses this opinion”, or, “I want to be part
of the social group that expresses this opinion, so I’m hoping that expressing it
myself will encourage its members to accept me.”

I haven't been on Twitter for weeks and Facebook is dying a death.

I only use it to keep up with the latest sport based rumours

twitter is fine (at the moment) as a company advertising platform. I wouldn't consider using it for any other purpose
