It's a horrible situation for them to be in.

Sadly though there doesn't seem to be a peaceful path for them to take.

its not a dire situation for the president at all. He can snuff out the protests with a wave of his hand and anyone that thinks otherwise is kidding themselves

Yes that's true,
Weekends appear to be the best time for protests.
But President Xi
has his Massive Paid Army
to come in whenever he chooses.

I don't think so, the "illusion" of the possibility of a pseudo-Western-style life is essential to modern urban China and has been increasingly so as their economy has developed. There's a very good reason they haven't thrown full support behind Russia for example - they CANNOT swallow economic sanctions the way Russia can.

Second to that, the population of China is now sitting at nearly 1.4 billion and 2/3 of that (900 million) is Urban. ANY sort of control the government has is purely based in illusion. Their entire military couldn't stop an actual uprising. The scale is quite unimaginable ... the population of China today is more than the population of the entire planet less than 150 years ago.

They are even not airing any close up shots of the crowd from the World Cup because their citizens will see people from countries all over the world mixing with each other without fear and without masks while they are still locked in their homes. It's nearly 3 years now since they started with this

And I stand by my caveat; "if it's small enough". Like I said if any significant portion of the Chinese citizenry was to attempt an uprising, it wouldn't be a matter of wanting to quash it - of course they would want to - but the simple resources needed to do that effectively would be staggering. The worrying thing of course is that, with that being the case, they might resort to making a few high-profile examples in the hopes that other areas would disband in fear.

HOWEVER they do know full well that the West won't buy from them if they push too hard at that door and again, unlike Russia who can survive out in the cold for a while (not happily, but they can survive) China is ultimately still a manufacturing economy that needs a market ... they are crippled without trade.

i think you are wrong, China got out the tanks before and they are more authoritarian now. Same as with Russia, big populations but they dont stand a chance.

Sunak used a new phrase yesterday, pragmatic. What that basically means is we wont take action when it hurts us. So we may say naughty China, but that will be it. USA won't do anything either
