They need to re- assess who goes to prison.

There's costs to people being in prison and far too many non violent people are in prison who should be in another system like probation.
However the probation service. has been hammered by this government too.

I'd keep the prisons for those who are a physical threat to others in the main.

Yes too though, more prisons are needed but spaces could be found by clearing out non violent prisoners currently given a custodial sentence.

While some who commit violent crime and assault get suspended sentences.

Yeah I don't think non-violent crimes should generally result in a prison sentence.
