I can't even imagine how the families are feeling. :(
I don’t quite understand how these kids all 11 or under ) were on a lake without an adult in any weather - never mind freezing conditions

The lady who announced it this morning only barely managed to hold back the tears as she was relaying the story. Very, very sad indeed.

The Met Office has warned of the risks of ice as the UK faces a cold spell.
During a news conference on Sunday evening, West Midlands fire chief Richard Stanton said crews were told on arrival that up to six people had been in the lake.

Yes that would make more sense …although again .. where were parents !?
We never let ours out of sight at that age and things were far safer than now 30 years ago

Considering people of colour sometimes had to go out in groups to lessen the likelihood of getting killed/jumped by racist yobs and crime was generally as high as ever I wouldn’t exactly say that. You just hear more about crimes now (thanks to the Internet).
But none of that detracts from the tragedy of this case anyhow. Parents can’t supervise kids over a certain age 100% of the time, especially when they’ve sort of demonstrated they can be trusted to go off for a bit at least some of the time. I don’t know many parents who accompany their 11-year-olds to play.

Under normal circumstances you’d trust someone on the brink of being in high-school to look out for all of them but age isn’t the thing to make an issue here. It’s very sad all-’round so for a second it doesn’t matter how-old they were.

Such a needless loss of life but the message is still not getting through about the danger’s of water and frozen water let’s not forget all those that died in the summer from going into water in extreme heat.

Without meaning to sound horrible, I do honestly wonder why the parents were allowing their children out in this weather? Especially the 6 year old.

Exactly. I wouldn’t necessarily blame the parents.

I don't think in situations like this you can blame parents necessarily - no one is psychic and the benefit of hindsight has to be taken into consideration - BUT - I don't think people should shy away from saying that lessons should be learned from this, which is what can happen if there's a dogged insistence that "nothing could have been done differently".
For one people (parents, schools, peers) need to be very clear on the dangers of cold weather ESPECIALLY around water - I honestly think that because of our modern comforts there's an element of people being complacent or too comfortable when it comes to extreme weather. Below-zero temperatures kill people. It's that simple... being outdoors in those temperatures carries an inherent risk. Now I'm not saying kids shouldn't be playing out in the snow but they should always be in groups because even a minor fall and getting hurt/stuck could kill or have serious health implications quite quickly in these sorts of temperatures. In groups someone can go and get help. In terms of this situation, quite simply it's NEVER safe for ANYONE to be around deep water in freezing temperatures. Not alone, not in a group, not even with adults around.
I know that kids often disregard risk, but honestly I do suspect that these poor boys had no idea how much danger they were in, and from the sounds of some of the statements, the adults who knew they were out playing around the lake had no real conception of how dangerous it was either.
I don't blame the parents but this could, potentially, have been avoided if the kids themselves were more aware of the level of risk, and if parents etc. were more aware of the general risks of extremely cold weather.
The parents themselves don't need to hear that at this time, that helps no one, BUT other parents - and other kids - do need to hear it.

^ agree with everything TS said.
When kids ask if they can go play in the snow, the last thing you expect is that they'll fall into a frozen lake. And as TS said, therein lies the problem - it wasn't even seen as a possibility or danger, not even by the parents.

Given we haven’t had temps like this or proper snow in many areas for acdecade some of these kids will never have seen frozen lakes before

That was my thinking - I feel like the dangers of falling though ice was much more common knowledge for kids at one point, when lakes more regularly froze over in winter, and when (let's face it) more kids played outdoors more regularly.

Lol @ “TS”.
We’re not even pretending or vaguely disguising the fact that everyone’s convinced he’s Toy Soldier now, are we?
