In a statement, the Tory chairman said his
father took founder shares in YouGov and that
HMRC later "disagreed about the exact allocation",
leading him to "settle the matter and pay
what they said was due".

"They concluded that this was a
'careless and not deliberate' error," he said.

"So that I could focus on my life as a
public servant, I chose to settle the

20 Jan – The Guardian reports Zahawi agreed to pay a penalty to HMRC and when asked repeatedly about the penalty, Zahawi’s spokesperson does not deny one had been paid. They insist Zahawi’s taxes are properly declared and paid in the UK

21 Jan – Labour calls for an investigation with deputy leader Angela Rayner saying Zahawi’s position is “untenable”. Later that day, Zahawi issues a statement saying an error in his tax affairs was “careless and not deliberate”

The exact timing as to when the settlement was reached with HMRC remains unclear, as does the amount paid. The BBC understands it to be in the region of £5m.

There are no penalties for "innocent" tax errors, the boss of HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has told MPs.

Appearing before a Commons committee, Jim Harra was pressed on issues around the tax affairs of Nadhim Zahawi.

The Conservative Party chairman is facing calls to resign, after it emerged he paid a penalty to HMRC.

Mr Harra stressed he could not comment on individual cases but said penalties were not applied when someone had taken "reasonable care".

Mr Zahawi has said HMRC accepted the error over previously unpaid tax was "careless and not deliberate". He has also insisted he has "acted properly throughout".

The HMRC chief executive was due to be giving evidence to the Public Accounts Committee about managing tax compliance following the pandemic.

However, he also faced questions related to the tax arrangements of Mr Zahawi, who has come under growing pressure in recent weeks.

Whilst he would not comment on specific individuals, Mr Harra said: "There are no penalties for innocent errors in your tax affairs. So if you take reasonable care, but nevertheless make a mistake, whilst you will be liable for the tax and for interest if it's paid late, you would not be liable for a penalty.

"But if your error was as a result of carelessness, then legislation says that a penalty could apply in those circumstances."

There's no way his was careless or made a mistake, he'd have all kinds of accountants with the money he's got. He misled parliament more than once over this and he was Chancellor of the Exchequer, for God's sake. I mean, you really couldn't make it up. Not to go all Jordan Peterson but hierarchies are inevitable, and if the current system is outright discarded, it could be replaced by something much worse.

Like when Oliver Cromwell executed Charles I, and the UK lived under Puritanism; it sucked so much the people got rid of Cromwell II and retrieved Charles II from France and plonked him on the throne. People thought they didn't want a Monarchy, but the reality was pretty different.

Tangeants aside, what I'm saying is, a Parliamentary system is probably the best we could hope for, so let them keep voting for cake.
