View Full Version : CRT TV's, VHS, VHS Players - Coming back?

The average CRT TV (the big backs, weighs a ton TV's) are going for an average of £60 on ebay, some portables are going for £100.

Video tapes, especially Horror's, and not just Pre-Cert videos (which have always been quite valuable). Child's Play, the original VHS for example is currently on ebay with a £50 bid.

VHS Players, averaging £30/60.

Funny how things we throw out, sometimes pay people to collect for the skip now have a nice few quid value....

Does anyone on here still have any old TV and VHS media?

I think we still have a video player at home somewhere  I have a few VHS tapes, mostly of stuff from years ago that I taped off MTV  a few home videos as well that I planned to transfer to some other format (but I haven't gotten around to yet

I stopped using VHS years ago and sent pretty much most videos to charity shops. Had to throw away the taped stuff ,but it does seem like alot of old stuff are collectable items now . I guess there's a market for it.

Do you know what i think it is though, people want to step back in time. I remember the days of walking to the local video shop on a Friday after school, being allowed ONE video to rent for the weekend. I would be in this small little video shop for easily an hour, going over the same old videos, looking at the backs of the covers, trying to make the best choice. (luckily the video shop people knew my parents, and baring anything blue, or sexual violence, i could rent anything i liked) Then that was it, you had that ONE film for the weekend. So you watched and enjoyed, even if it was sh!t.

I know times are better in that sense, like if you don't like a film after 20 mins, at the click of a button you have thousands to choose from OD. But there is something "sweet" about how it used to be.

I certainly miss physical media. Tapes, CD's, Videos. Going into town every weekend as a teen, with a tenner in my pocket, and coming home with as much as i could afford. Those were good memories

Yeah Pre-Cert horror has always been pretty valuable. Mainly because there are so few of them left, due to the Video Nasties scare in the 80's, most were burnt. The cover artwork is also very unique too.

My ex was a member of a pre-cert forum and the DPP banned list Nasties would regularly sell on there in the high £100s. Even the video covers would go for £100s. The films themselves are shockingly bad but because he collected them we had various VHS players, laser disc players and different region DVD players. I don't miss them at all

But literally every Video Nasty, barring Faces of Death, never had people actually dying. That's the misconception with Video Nasties. Don't get me wrong, a lot were just plain sh!t. But no one died for real.

The Tories had an agenda and just wanted things they didn;t like banned, or stuff that offended them. It's what the left are doing now.

Yeah i made it a thing of mine to try and see all 39 Section 1 DPP's banned films. And the 42 Section 2. I've seen most of them. Most really are rubbish

Madhouse was ok. Driller Killer is very punk NYC grunge, very atmospheric, not bad at all. Nightmares in a Damaged Brain was crazy, but i kinda liked it. The Cannibal ones never really appealed to me. The Burning shows on the Horror Channel every other week now lol.

But yeah, none are very good really.

I didn't like the Cannibal ones either or the Nazi ones - but The Beast in Heat was one of the most rare so most expensive. My ex had an original pre-cert video sleeve of it but only had a copy of the film. Driller Killer is probably the one I watched that I enjoyed the most.

We had the Jake West documentaries which were interesting (more to him than me lol).

The only way to get a decent retro gaming experience of anything before the PS3/360 era is on a 4:3 ratio CRT television, so I know that good ones still sell for decent prices.

VHS I'm less sure about - honestly it just wasn't ever a good media format, same with cassette tapes. It would be purely for nostalgia.

There's a VR experience of a "90's bedroom" that's amazing... you can use the TV/old consoles, right down to putting in the tapes and discs yourself, and it has built in emulators so the games actually play on the screen... not a brilliant way to play a game but the nostalgic experience is great.

Yeah the CRT's for Retro gaming is definitely pushing up the price.

Oh yeah, it's only for nostalgia, not quality. Even Betamax was a better format than VHS.

Also, just been going through my old CD's from the 90's. Most of them are Rap and Hip Hop. Some go for decent prices. Not life changing or anything, but 2pac's All Eyes on Me just sold for £28 on ebay, i have a copy of that. Same as The Chronic, i see it see for 20 something quid a couple days ago.

Most, just like VHS are worthless, but worth checking before you disregard them.

I've never seen one with the "not guilty" banner for sale, ever. Only seen a couple collectors on youtube show them off years ago. I have a feeling it's gonna do extremely well.

VHS is a crappy format to be honest... It can only be for the nostalgia value there.

However for retro gaming (anything up to and including PlayStation 1/N64) - they look and play best on a 4:3 CRT television and always will. They were made for them, and they look terrible on high-resolution screens. There's no way around that. I have dreams of one day having a gaming nostalgia room and it will 100% have a couple of CRT tellys in it :joker:.

Well yeah, modern tech goes with modern tech and all that. But PS2, Mega Drives, Nintendo games from the early 00's and 90's/80's where consoles made with CRT display in mind. So they gel together much better.

the issue is that the high definition tv's of today have a picture that is too detailed. It makes older low definition video sources look fuzzy. So because older tv's are also low resolution they are a better match to the video source

I don't have room for anything like that currently, I don't even have any old consoles set up, just the PC, PS5 and Switch (and a dusty Xbox 360 because we still occasionally bust out Guitar Hero :joker: ). Any oldschool gaming is on emulators these days.

I do still own a Master System, Megadrive, SNES, classic "big" PS1, PS2 and GameCube but they're all boxed up waiting for the day when I realise my dream and have a garage conversion for gaming/home cinema :flutter:. One day, one day.

My sister still has a VHS player and the full VHS box sets of Buffy and Angel. Maybe they'll end up being worth something.

TBF you can tell with those why sourcing the old ones is popular: the "remastered version" of the older series (S1-4 of Buffy and S1 of Angel) are terrible on Disney+. They've been cropped to 16:9 which loses some of the detail in some scenes, and the lighting/colour palette is totally ruined. Some night-time scenes look like bright daylight because they messed up the contrast (Buffy handled dark scenes by having the characters illumated brightly, with the backgrounds dark... the remasters "equalise" the contrast making the backgrounds far brighter. Very weird.)

Anyway... I should probably try to buy a couple of decent CRT's, they're getting rarer and will probably end up stupidly expensive. I live in the sort of little village where well-to-do people with kids who have flown the nest and far too many bedrooms will almost CERTAINLY have a few tucked away, with no idea that they're worth anything. Local Facebook Pages can be a gold mine.

I recorded a lot of programmes off the TV in the 90s on VHS tape. I don't know what is on the tapes because I didn't label most of them lol.

My dad used to rent and... Umm... "back up"... Films from Blockbuster using two VCR's connected together with a SCART cable. There would be very occasional visual blips or sound glitches/wobbles in this process, and as a result, films that I watched repeatedly as a kid had those glitches as standard and they became a normal part of the film...

Best example is, we had Independence day, and there's a scene where Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum are standing together looking at the small alien ship hatching the plan to infiltrate the mother ship. On our version, it glitched and repeated about two seconds: they were looking at each other, both look at the ship, it blipped back to them looking at each other, and repeated the bit where they turn to look at the ship.

Mkst have watched that ccopy dozens of times.

TO THIS DAY if I watch Independence Day on streaming or whatever, I find it weird when that DOESN'T happen .

Another example is, on our copy of Back To The Future there was a bit where the sound went higher pitched for maybe 5 seconds. Again I expect it to happen every time I see the film...
