Only if it's intentional - I once got a few free weeks because the olde-style meter froze in place and it took them weeks to come and replace it, and when they did they just had to take the reading as what it said on the dial (which was of course exactly what it had said 2 weeks earlier).

Back then that was only about £20 free - would be loads these days :laugh:

Think that was the leccy actually not gas, they tend to fix gas meters pretty quick, so no one gets blown up etc.

Thousands of energy customers have received a shock 99.9pc discount on their energy bills.


Unfortunately for them this was not the deal of the century but a glitch at supplier Octopus which meant customers had hundreds of pounds wiped from their bills.

Octopus sent an email to several thousands customers last week admitting it had billed them just 0.01pc for the amount of gas they used over the past few months.

The provider blamed the blunder on a “data feed error from a third party” affecting several thousand customers who have old imperial gas metres. All new gas metres are metric (that is, they record usage in cubic metres) but many households’ meters still register in cubic feet.

Octopus said it will not be seeking repayment from the customers who were undercharged and all of them have now been contacted.

A spokesman for Octopus said: “Several customers have since let us know they were aware the payments were lower than expected but that they were enjoying the discounts. Of course, we are offering further support to any affected customers as required.”

My friend told me just today ~ as i've had recent prob with Gas biil that when her mum had to move to a nursing she tried to give Gas/ Elect a reading from her residential flat, the meters for every flat was in a room in basement so you had to get a porter with a key, when she looked the gas meter was not working so she rang the company and they said could she email and send photo ~ no thats not my job ! so she ignored it , her mother passed a while ago now and she's never heard a word or had a bill.

On a good front my £893 gas/elect bill For ONE month !!! has now turned into credit after being wrongly billed since 2020. Total robbers the lot of em !!
