View Full Version : 'I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more' Tom Jones Banned

[But with the WRU reeling from allegations
of a “toxic” culture and misogyny the
governing body has responded to claims
that it promotes violence against
women by banning it.
The song includes
the lyric: “She stood there laughing/
[B]I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more.”]
Yes you Bugger,
you murdered her
[The Welsh Rugby Union has ordered
the 1968 Sir Tom Jones hit Delilah
to be removed from its Principality Stadium
choirs’ song list on the eve of the 2023 Six Nations.
The pop song about a jealous lover stabbing
his unfaithful paramour has been lustily
sung by Welsh fans and become something
of an alternative sporting anthem.]

They said the same thing on the news this morning.
They have just stopped it being sang by official choirs or played into the stadiums but they know it will continue to be sung by the fans initially

It's funny how Delilah is seen as being too 'violent' , but little girls are singing cardi B WAP on tiktok & boys are happily singing to every rap song out there .

After all the allegations of misogyny and abuse of women levelled at the WRU, they've responded by banning fans singing a song. Genius.
this is why they are doing it .........
The Welsh Rugby Union is facing allegations of sexism and discrimination that have left the MP and former Wales international Tonia Antoniazzi expressing “great concerns” over the women’s game in the country. A number of former WRU employees have taken part in an investigation by BBC Wales, to be screened on Monday night, making accusations about their time at the governing body.
Charlotte Wathan, the general manager of women’s rugby until her resignation last February, claims offensive comments by a colleague left her in tears and feeling sick. Another, unnamed, contributor says she was left contemplating suicide by her experiences of bullying and sexism at work, according to BBC Wales Investigates. Incidents of racism and homophobia are also alleged.
The WRU said an “amicable resolution” had been reached with Wathan “satisfying both parties” after an investigation by an external law firm. It said a confidentiality agreement between the parties prevented further details. It noted that another of the complaints had been investigated and subsequently withdrawn, while new information included in the broadcast would be “followed up and acted upon”.
A spokesperson said: “The Welsh Rugby Union condemns the use of racist, homophobic or sexist language and states in the strongest possible terms that racism, homophobic, sexist or bullying behaviour has no place in Welsh rugby.”
A statement said: “It is vitally important to note that we have a duty of care as employers to both the complainants and those complained against. That duty of care continues and we are deeply concerned about the effect of this programme on those individuals in respect of the fact the allegations described remain unsubstantiated following a thorough independent legal investigation.”

I mean the song is literally about a man killing a woman for cheating on him and arguing that it's her own fault for "making him crazy" with her actions - a classic time-old excuse used by abusers and people who murder their partners.
But I guess if people like that sort of thing that's on them :umm:. Forum's descending further into Redpill misogyny by the day it seems. Remember when The Truth got banned for his aggressive misogyny and we mostly understood why that was justified?
He'd fit right in these days :joker:. Let's invite him back. At least he was unintentionally funny.

Then there clearly is no line. I possibly shouldn't be surprised tha you're OK with the song GoldHeart - you did support Depp over Heard, after all, as did many on here, and I suppose that mindset requires making excuses for men becoming violent when women don't behave how they want them to. By that logic, the song is fine.
Personally I'd be banning it from more than Rugby matches, and getting the sniffer dogs in for a walk round Tom Jones' vegetable patch.

"Too Weak To Resist"
We stood before our friends and pledged eternal love
To have and to hold
We both meant every word and spoke of one above
Love could not grow cold
Then I found myself so many nights
Wandering with a claw hammer and duct tape
Out to split a skull
And bury her in my crawl space
:nono:
O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
Your likes again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
And stood against them,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent them homeward,
Tae think again
Friday night they'll be dressed to kill
Down at Dino's Bar'n'Grill
The drink will flow and blood will spill
And if the boys wanna fight, you better let 'em
That jukebox in the corner blastin' out my favorite song
The nights are getting longer, it won't be long
Won't be long 'til summer comes
Now that the boys are here again

Andrew Tate ft. Alf.
Sir Elton ....
… It's getting late, have you seen my mates?
Ma, tell me when the boys get here
It's seven o'clock, and I wanna rock
Want to get a belly full of beer
… My old man's drunker than a barrel full of monkeys
And my old lady, she don't care
My sister looks cute in her braces and boots
A handful of grease in her hair
… Oh, don't give us none of your aggravation
We had it with your discipline
Oh, Saturday night's alright for fighting
Get a little action in
… Get about as oiled as a diesel train
Gonna set this dance alight
'Cause Saturday night's the night I like
Saturday night's alright, alright, alright, ooh
… Well, they're packed pretty tight in here tonight
I'm looking for a dolly who'll see me right
I may use a little muscle to get what I need
I may sink a little drink and shout out, "She's with me"
… A couple of the sounds that I really like
Are the sounds of a switchblade and a motorbike
I'm a juvenile product of the working class
Whose best friend floats in the bottom of a glass, oh
… Don't give us none of your aggravation
We had it with your discipline
Saturday night's alright for fighting
Get a little action in
… Get about as oiled as a diesel train
Gonna set this dance alight

It' s really disheartening to see so many champions of women opposing this, when it hasn't even been banned; it's just been removed from the playlist of the choir. That action alone makes it more likely to reverberate around the stadium.
Not sure if folks really think they've hit on something by posting other song lyrics that also haven't been banned, or whether they will now be calling for those other songs to be taken up by official choirs.

It's not about it "having murder in it", it's about the old trope that a woman's infidelity and even more specifically a woman mocking/laughing at a man is a justification for that man to become violent or even murderous.
Men literally get away with murder as "crimes of passion" in court because the jury has been convinced that his poor little ego was just so broken by rage and jealousy that the outburst wasn't his fault.
That's what the song is about. Really gross.
Like I said before, heavy Johnny Depp vibes.

Why do you continue to bring Johnny Depp into this , oh and if you paid attention to those Heard/ Depp threads .... you'd have seen that I talked about the relationship being toxic and ugly on both sides. But I really believe Depp has mental health issues aswell as addiction problems, and Heard & her family/ friends were doing drugs with him aswell .
So don't tell me that I defend or excuse violent men .... just because I don't see the point in banning a 60 year old Tom Jones song, which every Tom dick & Harry use to sing along to merrily ... until it suddenly starts to be 'offensive' .
You know I hate misogynistic pr1cks like Clarkson ,Piers & Tate . But you seem to be asleep when I comment on those tw@ts .

False. Nothing at all was "proven" (it wasn't a criminal trial) and Depp is quite blatantly an abusive alcoholic, who continued to leverage the law and social media to psychologically abuse Amber Heard throughout the trial. I don't want to get back into that again on here though really and shouldn't have brought it up - that thread was an absolute mess.

People still want to put all the blame on Depp as he's the "big bad wolf " in their eyes, the evidence clearly showed she was violent and aggressive. Nobody is excusing Depp's behaviour....but Heard is no victim simple as that ! and she's a liar ! .

I personally think that if people want to sing the song at Sports matches, they can, obviously this logic goes for the Choirs as well who have been basically cautioned against singing the song.
Personally I'll never really agree with censoring songs, especially when Blurred Lines is freely available for people to sing.

Not everyone on Depp's side liked him that way ,there was people who were never Depp fans .... still defending him due to the evidence .
Yes that's true, but like I said, most are...yours can be described as some if you want.
Is Barry Manilow's song ( copacabana ) going to be criticised next?. It involves murder & mental illness ? ....all sang with another upbeat tune .

Imagine being so riled up by this, that you think any other song in the world is a gotcha

I think we have different definitions of riled up, because this is hilarious. When you raised a point about my post in this thread, we had a respectful conversation, which is in opposition to putting you beneath me.

This is most strange.
I'm a hip hop fan and some of my favourites tracks, that are considered classics, the lyrics are misogynistic and frankly most of Lil Kim's back catalogue is obscene.
I'll accept it that a choir is unlikely to ever perform any of those tracks but to take this action against Delilah seems strange.
The arts, in general, are filled with horrific stories/scenes/characters that are considered classic's.
Lets explore the term 'Bodice Ripper'. Is it me or does it suggest sexual violence? When the bodice has been ripped off what do we think happens next? And do we think think the women are consenting to it all? There are so many things that can legitimately be questioned so why go after Delilah. As I say to me, this is strange

That's what I find really weird...they go after a 60 year old song . So many modern songs today are filled with violence & all sorts.

It's not being outright banned or censored though, they just don't want people singing it at sports matches... much the same as certain songs are banned at LT's Rangers matches. There's a good reason.
we sing all our songbook
no songs are banned
Celtic spent all of their last game singing "OOH AHH UP THE RA"
The IRA who killed hundreds of UK innocent people
scum
I like the idea of bodice ripping, I reckon a lot of women would as well.

Tbf Celtic fans have the right to humiliate themselves in front of everyone in Europe.
I genuinely believe that.

A peppering of sectarianism on a thread about a misogynistic song. What a delicious treat .

Women are still being murdered, coerced, terrorised, brutalised... Women are not able to walk the streets in safety or demonstrate peacefully without a male copper's knee in her neck... Maybe if some of the boys could concentrate on that rather than obsess about a fifty year old song about a fictitious murder.

This subject has been making me chuckle for a while. I know this a bit of whataboutism but there are so many examples I can call upon that I had to post something.
Let's explore the classic track - Hey Joe.
First few lines of the song, we know Joe has a gun, he plans to shoot down his 'old lady' for 'messin around, messin around town'. He later tells us he's done the deed - Unclear if he killed her, I'm gonna guess yes - shot her then gave her the gun.
Then comes one of the most iconic and brilliant guitar solos of all time. We'll come back to that.
Joe tells us he plans to flee the authorities by going 'Way down south' to Mexico where he can be free.
Joe sounds like an awful human being. Yet he's painted as quite charismatic and sympathetic.
The 'Arts', for want of a better word, are filled with these kinds of macabre tales of awful yet charming and charismatic people doing horrendous deeds.
If we are to take action against Delila. A track I think is quite tongue-in-cheek in its delivery. How far do we go? Do we deprive a generation of musicians access to Jimi's great solo? Absolutely not. Never. For me, that trumps everything
An artist should be allowed to offend us. Even if a historical work no longer conforms to newfound sensibilities.
Tomorrow we will discuss - The Taming of the Shrew. The next - The Colour Purple. There are so many examples. These works are considered to be classics. We need to be careful about wanting to cancel them.
