Is smoking the kind of thing you have to do with refined style (Silk Cut) or will Benson and Hedges do you?

B. & H. is very high-tar but it’s okay. So long as you’re capable of smoking in moderation, which is what you want if you want to relatively preserve your health and lung capacity anyway. The problem is most people get hooked (with nicotine being more addictive than heroin).

I've cut right down, but i have around 5 Amber Leaf roll ups a day. I really can't stand manufactured fags. Just 1 gives me a headache.

I put lettuce in my baccy pouch to keep it moist. A 50g pouch lasts me 3 weeks or so.

I used to smoke Camels and was always excited to go abroad because you could get the original yellow ones, for some reason UK shops only seem to do Camel Blue/Light

I often smoked Lucky Strikes at uni as well. Would sometimes get their click and roll ones before they became illegal. Also liked Marlboro Touch as they were cheaper and I often didn't want a full cigarette anyway

Haven't smoked now for over a year though. Never was a prolific smoker, would just have a pack every week or two

It’s good when you can stick to moderate/occasional smoking. And Silk Cut’s always a good choice. It’ll see you through, whether you’re at the pub or trying to get through a 13-hour shift.

I was a Marlboro Reds kid from 15 - 24 (social only, I've only had one cigarette whilst sober in my life and it was horrible). So the most I've ever smoked is about 2 packs/week in particularly-social early Uni days. At 16 we used to get one pack of 20 between 4 or 5 of us on a Friday night, out the cigarette machine at the pub. Remember cigarette machines?? Also remember when pubs didn't give a **** that you were 16 :joker:.

My dad for all of his smoking life smoked B&H so I stole quite a few of those in my teens - but they were dog rough, that was a last resort.

No, I tell a lie.

Last resort was my mate's mum's "Club" that came in a blue pack. Actually disgusting IIRC ... they felt "thick and slimey", like smoking cooking oil?

Same here. When I’m working long hours and I haven’t brought in CBD coffee (my limit otherwise, Costa/Caffe Nero bought or bog-standard coffee, is 2-3 cups a day, stop me feeling anxious/caffeine-overload jittery) I’ll often buy a pack of 20 and just smoke it throughout my shifts so that at least I’ve got a bit of a nicotine rush keeping me pumping along the way. I may or may not excuse myself in the pub to have one or two (and it doesn’t happen very often). Beyond that I hardly ever smoke just for the sake of smoking anymore. Even when I did 15 was my max., and usually more like 5-10 a day. I don’t think I’ve ever been truly addicted to nicotine or tobacco. It’s pretty-much always just been a habit I could take or leave.

Redway
01-08-2023, 10:37 AM
And I only vape CBD (I like to do things in a relatively healthy way) so tobacco-vapes are off the table for me. If I want tobacco, I’d be more inclined to smoke actual cigarettes. And a pack of 20 can last me up to 2 weeks now. I don’t smoke enough anymore to be fussy about brands but when I did it tended to be Silk Cut or Lambert. Or the cheap Polish corner-shop kind, which could be anything (sometimes Richmond).

Nowadays I’m a little cautious and hesitant about smoking in public because you never know which gossiping eyes are watching you. I don’t smoke often now so if I’m spotted by someone who recognises me they might assume the wrong thing but at the end of the day everyone’s doing life for themselves first and foremost. It’s not so much about what other people think.

I think it was three months after the smoking ban that the age for buying cigarettes got raised from 16 to 18 so things were never going to be as strict back in the day about things like that to be fair. I still think it should’ve stayed 16 but that’s a different discussion altogether isn’t it.

There was certainly no challenge-25 back then either. Some people take pleasure in asking the same person over and over until the day they turn 26 (you’re only supposed to do it once or until you remember them) but the whole thing’s a bit ridiculous. If you’re old enough to be sixth-form/college age you’re going to get your hands on cigarettes anyway if that’s what you want to do. Just like taxing alcohol now and introducing plain-packet packaging I just see these things as unnecessary.

Have to say though - I've never encountered anywhere that sold single cigarettes.

When I was in my mid teens (around 2000) nowhere ID's though. Pubs were happy enough so long as you didn't look like an actual child, and there were multiple small shops that would sell cigarettes and alcohol to basically anyone over about 14.

I think there are probably more "mystery shoppers" around these days or something, I know it's not as easy for the kidz to get their booze these days.

Also everyone I knew had dodgy fake ID's bought for £10 off the internet. COMPLETELY unconvincing but so many places accepted them, even proper bars & clubs in town :joker:.

That principle should apply to the manner in which people behind the till ask people (especially young people who are actually only 18-20) for ID. Unless the person trying to buy is obviously about 12, you ask them for ID, not how old they are. You don’t want to put people off by patronising them or getting overly personal with them.

Back in the day plenty of corner shops would sell singles to young teenagers asking for smokes. That’s how I discreetly got away with it the handful of times I smoked cigarettes as a 15-year-old (I did manage to get a 10-pack of Lambert once at that time though). I’ve always been pretty socially introverted so I was happy to just wait until I was 18 for clubbing (and even then I had to almost be dragged out kicking and screaming). I didn’t get ’round to getting or using fake ID for anything.

Young Gen Zs (let’s say people born from 2003 onwards) don’t go in as deep alcohol and smoking-wise as baby boomers, Gen X, millennials or zillenials to be fair. They’re more distracted by the broadening of the LGBTQ+ category (if they’re about it) and vaping than anything else. A 16-year-old’s birthday party in 2000 or even 2014 would probably have at least some cider or WKD (at the very least someone would’ve snuck one in) but today’s teenagers are okay with soda and tend to just wait till they’re 18 to get litty-lit. Every generation moans about current teenagers but these ones live in a world where it’s not easy to get away with drinking and smoking under 18 anymore and they’ve lost interest by-and-large.

Unless you’re really about the baccie life (more than 10 a day). Probably to them smoking Silk Cut is like breathing in more air than anything but I don’t think it’s too bad. It’s not the illusion of feeling like you’re taking in less tar and nicotine more than it is the aesthetic and mellow nicotine rush. That’s all I want from pure tobacco these days anyway. It’s expensive so even less of a thing for me.
