Broadcaster Sir Michael Parkinson has died at the age of 88, his family has confirmed.

His TV career spanned seven decades, and he interviewed the world's biggest stars on his long-running chat show.

A statement from Sir Michael's family said: "After a brief illness Sir Michael Parkinson passed away peacefully at home last night in the company of his family.

"The family request that they are given privacy and time to grieve."

The presenter revealed he was receiving radiotherapy treatment for prostate cancer in 2013, and said he got the all-clear from doctors two years later.

Very sad news but looked so frail recently
He lived local to me and owned a local successful pub a stones throw from Hestons fat duck restaurant

His son also had a pub not far from me but in the last two years that was closed , sold and been knocked down.

No one's emotional. I'd say, more respectful. But thanks for sharing a big negative.

RIP Parky.

The hinds head in bray

There is a cricket pitch just round the corner and he would play there for charity matches

Funny enough Rolf Harris lived half a mile up the road.

As for man, his days are like grass;

he flourishes like a flower of the field;

for the wind passes over it, and it is gone,

and its place knows it no more.

We don't have chat show hosts like Parky any more.

We have big mouth show-offs who take the p&*$ and force laughter on the audience.

Parky had a gift of making people speak freely and you could hear a pin drop. Those old shows are absolutely brilliant. And the stars he interviewed, we don't have those types any more.

RIP, TV legend.
