For 2023 that’s not to be sniffed at. If anything I was expecting much less.

"This meant the Initial-produced format won the 9PM hour, but was some way short of the highest-rated show of the day: Strictly Come Dancing, which entertained 6.6M viewers on BBC1 and some way short of the 5.1 billion that watched the Queen's funeral or even Funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales with 32 million.

If indeed we compare the 2.5 million viewers with the distance to the Sun the comparison is more stark as that is 150 million kilometers.

Something stinks at ITV is they cant even mirror these kind of numbers"

comparing it to the queen's funeral broadcast

:skull:

agree with Redway anyway, tv is watched less these recent years, up against streaming services etc so that makes that amount still quite good

my nations comeback version low ratings but still the highest ratings of the channel they broadcast it on RTL5 (which never gets good and actually worse ratings for most of its other content, mainly unscripted reality tv)

This is the press release they put out.

BIG BROTHER: THE LAUNCH RATINGS

Big Brother achieved its highest launch since 2012 last night as it returned to screens, with 2.6 million viewers across ITV1 and ITV2 on all devices, and winning its 9pm slot.

As well as being the most streamed show of the day across ITVX, The ITV1 show ranked number one in its timeslot for both total viewers and young adults (16-34) and Big Brother was the UK's number one show of the day for young adults (16-34) across all networks.

For young adults (16-34) Big Brother delivered a combined market share of 48.7% making this the highest launch market share since the format aired on Channel 4 in 2006 (58.9%).

With 0.7 million TV viewers in the 16-34 age range, the show achieved a share of 26% across both channels, and 36% specifically on ITV2.

Big Brother returns on ITV2 and ITVX tonight at 9pm.

BB19 launched with 1.31 million.

Even Strictly’s technically underperforming compared to how it used to rate. 11 years ago it would’ve been rating 9.5 million + but over the past decade I’ve slowly resigned myself to the fact that that’s just not how people watch terrestrial TV anymore (big events aside). There’s a lot of new norms broadcasters have no choice but to contend with now.

It got less views than the Queen or Princess Diana's funeral? FLOP!

BB19 launched with 1.31 million.

That's the official rating BB19 only launched to 900k

The fact that it looks like they have (no mean task) managed to get some interesting, modest characters in 2023 is far more important imo

And the figures will get fewer and fewer unfortunately.
They have ticked too many boxes, boxes I never knew existed.

people can watch it all back in November or December etc. TV audiences are not even the same as when the show was on C5. Ask what the streaming figures are for the top shows on netflix, disney and Amazon and they will be surprised how low they are

More viewers than I thought tbh

…BB’s schedule time is competing directly with Married at First Sight atm, which has already had several episodes this season so some will already be invested in that…also, BB has to gain a new additional audience and following as well as old faithfuls and that will take a bit of time…I think though that its launch viewers were around equal to a Married at First Sight audience and that’s quite popular…so seems like a good start and I think will gain more and more…

Yeah going up against MAFS is not going to help ratings - very similar audiences I think and most are already invested in MAFS. I'll probably watch BB live and then MAFS on catch up after, simply because I feel C4 streaming has shorter and breaks than ITVX.

Final season on C5 was struggling to pull 1 million... 2.5 isn't twerrible, especially considering they stuck it on ITV2 :idc:

A bingo caller, a butcher, a doctor, a barmaid, a customer service worker.....I mean where did they find such outlandish people?!

WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

Decent viewing figures would be nice though, so they invest in a few more seasons than the 1 other they’ve already got planned

I quite liked that they did that and musical chairs & pass the parcel! It reminded me of the innocence of the very early BB’s, plus it was also a way of setting up little twists such as no hot water, no suitcase, etc - i.e nothing too harsh for the first night but still enough to cause a bit of unrest in the house.

Yeah I liked all that. Something a bit different for the launch show as well.

I've never seen a pre recorded launch before, I guess the plus side of it .....was it cut out all the unnecessary slow bits . I didn't mind the short VT's either ,it just means the housemates need to show their personalities more in the bb house.

Just glad its back!

But not surprised as I think there was confusion with when it was going to air (I first heard in the summer)

And with Strictly, its much more of a terrestrial TV centric show, whereas BB has been marketed as a ITV2/ITVX show, with a lot of emphasis on ITVX - tbh, I'd say ITV are actually embracing the online streaming future of tv a lot more than the other broadcasters

Yeah. Strictly’s a terrestrially marketed show that’s still capable of 10 to 12 million viewers per show but I don’t know if they’ve been getting that high in the past few years.
