Big Brother contestant Hallie has come out as transgender to her fellow housemates, admitting she felt she wasn't being 'authentic' by not telling them.

The youth worker, 18, was seen entering the show's famous house on ITV on Sunday night as the programme returned to British television after a five year hiatus.

She chose not to tell her fellow series contestants her story on the launch night but had a change of hear the following day.

In scenes set to air on ITV2 and ITVX on Monday night, the housemates will be seen gathered at the dining table discussing their living situation.

Hallie says: 'Hey guys, I just have something to say. Yesterday I feel like I wasn’t being 100% authentic in myself.'

She adds: 'I thought I’d let everyone know I’m trans, if you didn’t know already. I just thought I’d make that loud and clear. I’m a trans woman if you didn’t know.'

Hallie’s fellow housemates give her a hug, with Chanelle saying: 'Good for you. That’s very brave of you.”

As the housemates show their support to Hallie, Dylan says: 'This is a moment. I like it.'

Hallie says: 'I don’t know why I was nervous,' prompting Farida to say: 'You don’t need to be nervous.'

Trish tells Hallie: 'We’ve got you.'

Hallie is not the first transgender housemate to appear on Big Brother - trans woman Nadia Almada won the show in in 2004 and trans man Luke Anderson triumphed in 2012.

As soon as I clocked Halle's height and build, I basically knew. She's about 6 feet 6 tall, and the voice is kinda deep.

Apart from that observation, it's her life. I just feel a bit sorry for her being so tall.

I wouldn't have suspected if she'd been 5 feet 8.

I think more than anything they were respectful and letting her tell her own story however she wanted.

It was far more respectful than the approach in BB5 when everyone was constantly wondering if Nadia was a man and when a housemate was evicted Davina would tell them just to get their reaction on tv.

Not to mention the amount of jokes made at Nadia's expense on the spin off show.

Had they led in with it during her entrance you would have had victims of identity politics getting in a tizzy that her inclusion was pure tokenism. They completely avoided that and she's in there on her own merit.

You can have the op at 17 in England. From the looks of 13 year old Harry she was ready and willing to get things done ASAP. But fairly recent it would have been so still getting used to life as a woman (well any 18 year old would be but more so if you were a boy growing up).

It's probably a stepping stone for society for it to not be mentioned straight away, like it shouldn't need to be said because it can cloud over some peoples first impressions of her. I like that they didn't tell us but it is sad that it had to become a guessing game for some people :/

Nah I’d have been very surprised if they had. Especially with how much emphasis they have put on ‘be kind’ etc regarding no booing the housemates on launch, and to think twice about what you might post online. It would’ve been very hypocritical of them to then basically ‘out’ someone on national TV :laugh:

Well I’m glad she can feel like she can actually be herself now after telling the other housemates about this, I imagine it must’ve been a bit of a burden having to keep something that personal from people she could be living with for sometime so good on her.

On first impressions I didn’t actually think she was trans, that didn’t enter my mind at all last night. I only noticed that she seemed really tall and that she looked a lot older than 18 (I thought she looked early/ mid twenties).
